  1. He's in a tough spot. He may be in a position where he'll get none of the credit if the Mets succeed and all of the blame if they don't. He managed like a rookie at times last year, but the Mets pitching staff (especially the rotation) ended the season in far better shape than it started. Hopefully that continues.
  2. I'm betting on enough outfielders staying healthy that we don't need to see him.
  3. I'm not convinced that the Mets have had a criminally disproportionate number of injuries. I think the bigger issue is that the team has had a tendency to either ignore injuries for too long (like Jay Bruce last year) or put players back on the field well before they are ready, making small problems into big ones (Matz in 2017) and big problems into catastrophic ones (Cespedes).
  4. There are a lot of unsigned players. Harper and Machado are obviously getting the most attention, but the list is actually pretty long.
  5. He won't head to Queens right away, but injuries will happen and he'll get his chances. I'll give him a 3.87 ERA in 35 IP.
  6. Not sure if he's a lock to beat out Zamora, but I do think he's the favorite.
  7. I always liked Endy, I'm happy to have him back in the fold, and I wish him nothing but the best.

Goldschmidt jumped AAA and hit .250/.333/.474 in 177 ABs, before following it with .286/.359/.490 line in his first full season. I'll go in between those numbers: .268/.346/.482 in 500 ABs, with 20 HR and 70 RBI.

  11. Benjamin Grimm wrote: I guess we should be grateful for the past 46 years that we had without the DH. I think it makes the game less interesting. I remember Art Rust Jr. (remember him?) saying that fans don't want to see "a chess match" but I happen to like that aspect of the game, trying to think along with the managers. I bet the sport's most loyal fans DO want to see a chess match. Benjamin Grimm wrote: I do agree that the one-batter reliever adds tedium to the game. I kind of like the idea of the three-batter minimum, as it would add a new element of strategy to the game. I'm not a huge fan of LOOGYs, but I believe the manager and GM should decide which players to use and how to use them, not the league front office. Yes the LOOGY adds tedium, but so do replays, fouling people, kneel-downs, and the last two minutes of a close football or basketball game taking half an hour of real time. And yet the NBA and NFL aren't looking to tweak absolutely everything. Benjamin Grimm wrote: The change to the trade deadline is supposed to somehow deter teams from cashing in their chips. By making the buyer-or-seller decision have to come earlier, I guess they're hoping that fewer teams will opt to be sellers. I'm not so sure that that will have much of an effect, but perhaps we'll see. I don't have a problem with teams who stop trying to win in July. I have a problem with teams like the Pirates, who stopped trying to win in 1993. If the league wants more people to go to games, start with that. And then go on to address the two star free agents in their prime that nobody seems to want. Like I said before, there will be more than a year between pitches if Manfred cares more about doing stupid shit that nobody really wants than in addressing the real problem.
  12. I think that anything that reduces strategy does not serve the best interests of the game. Especially if all the reductions in strategy benefit the offense. A boom in offensive production has not helped attendance levels, so stop assuming that's what people want. This does not mean that LOOGYs are necessarily a good thing. Having a pitcher on your roster who can't give you 60 good innings, especially if you're also trying to pitch your starters less, can certainly backfire. But the manager and GM should make those decisions, right or wrong, not the league.
  13. =41Forever post_id=2414 time=1549459702 user_id=69] Joel Sherman tweeting about the proposed changes -- with a Mets note: Joel Sherman @Joelsherman1 4/Also stronger movement toward adding the DH in the NL. Here is something to keep in mind: 1 HUGE reason #Mets agreed to take on final 5 yrs of Cano's contract was their internal strong belief that the DH was coming to the NL. Also if there is a universal DH, the PA knows
  14. Scrap all those idiotic ideas favor of this proposal: get the owners to stop colluding and taking a bigger and bigger share of revenues before the next work stoppage puts more than a year between pitches.
  15. That's as low risk as you can get for a veteran whose track record is mostly good.
  16. He definitely appears to be on the decline -- which doesn't mean he couldn't upgrade on Vargas, or at least function in a relief role. A year commitment at 4 or 5 million would be reasonable.
  17. Greg Holland goes to Arizona for $3.5M guaranteed and another $3M in incentives.
  18. If Walker hits like he did a couple of years ago, the team gets something for him in July. Smart rebuilding teams should make a point of getting guys on one or two year deals.
  19. That's a super aggressive ranking for Vientos, who had a good year in rookie ball but nothing that would make you go "wow, how are the other prospect sites missing this guy?" I hope Law knows something the rest of us don't.
  20. =Centerfield post_id=1950 time=1548706866 user_id=65]I still think he can hit someday. Would have been good if he didn't completely disappear after that foot injury last year.
  21. The glut of infielders probably made this inevitable. It would take an unpleasant number of injuries to create an opening for Cecchini at this point, and I don't see it or even want to see it happening. I'd feel bad, but I think a waiver claim is in his best interests.
  22. Hindsight is bionic. He probably thinks they should have let Wright walk too. You know, if they hadn't signed Francisco Rodriguez, they could have used the draft pick they lost to get Mike Trout one pick before the Angels got him. Really, they should have known.
  23. The safe spots in the pen are Diaz, Familia, Lugo, Gsellman, and Wilson. Two are up for grabs. One should go to a lefty, which would be either Zamora or Avilan. The other is up for grabs. Now, you want one of that long list of guys that Edgy mentioned to step forward (or more, in the likely event that somebody gets hurt). But none of those guys really did last year, and a few of them actively got in the way. Maybe all they need is another year of experience, or maybe an established reliever with a good track record can be had on the cheap. Or possibly both. But if Warren is looking to take what he can get at this point, there is no reason not to take a look. I'd offer him $3M with a team option for $4M or a $1M buyout. If that's good enough, then great. And if not, the situation is not so urgent that I'd go above it.
  24. They should also hire John Buck to coach his minor league team.
  25. Underwhelming, but it fills a need. It also puts them at least a little bit above last year's payroll, I think (for what it's worth). On the other hand, the $15M of AAV going to Wilson and Lowrie could have gotten us Andrew Miller or Zach Britton, without really hurting us in the infield.
