  1. A little too silly at points (going through a succession of waterfallls completely unscathed, for example), but still a lot of fun.
  2. Better than I thought it would be, but I wasn't expecting much. A few less songs would have made a better movie, as some of the songs just seemed really forced. But it had the makings of a workable story, and I didn't cringe for the full two hours.
  3. The West Side New Dealers are my friend Andrew. His fantasy teams usually have FDR-related names, like the Roosevelt Brain Trust.
  4. I have a friend who was asking about fantasy leagues. When is it OK to extend him an invite?
  5. So far we only have four teams. I'm guessing the four people already registered are the ones who'd be perfectly happy with a 24-hour wait period. Everybody else will probably want more time, but once we get a firm number for the league size we could vote on it. Not sure how I feel about team size. I actually think it was more of a challenge to have extra roster holes to fill -- in a 13-team league, the pickings are very slim for that fourth outfielder spot. But there's room for debate on that too.
  6. 13, I think. 17 the year before that.
  7. Love the password. VERY easy to remember!
  8. Thanks to nymr for running things, to everybody for playing and making it fun, and to Vic for putting up one hell of a fight. I wish I felt more like celebrating, though.
  9. I feel like the Mets; I've been in front most of the way, but the lead really feels tenuous. Those three teams just one point behind me in BA are making me very nervous. Then again, I'm amazed that I'm where I am given that none of the trades I made at the beginning of the year have really helped me at all. (Bedard, Youkilis and Drew for Konerko and Bush? I didn't really do that, did I?)
  10. Iubitul wrote: Am I the only one who remembers that we were in the beginning of an ice age 30 years ago? We know more now than we knew in the early seventies. The people who published that particular paper were looking at one facet of human pollution, namely the addition of aerosols (suspended airborne particulates) and the ability of these aerosols to reflect sunlight back into space. They never factored the addition of greenhouse gases into the equation. The most that can be said for the paper is that scientists started to take a closer look at what was going on in the earth's atmosphere because of it, but their analysis was seriously incomplete.
  11. Utley's the best player at his position. No question he has to play. You don't really have a choice but to be patient with guys like Delgado, Burrell, Willis, and Chavez. These are guys who almost have to get better in the second half. NYMR's right about saves too. You're probably going to wind up with two points in the SV category whether you keep Cordero or not, so see what you can get for him. Maddux is one of your better pitchers, so don't drop him. Andy Sonnanstine, though... You're 63 IP above where you should be if you want to stay under the 1450 IP limit, and your ERA and WHIP suggest you've got too much quantity and not enough quality. I'd drop three starters for the best available relievers in terms of ERA and WHIP, then trade Cordero for an ace starter. And make sure your lineup is full every day, or at least as full as possible. Take chances with young guys who could break out. I think McGowan has enough upside to hold on to. Jeremy Hermida is available and can probably give you at least as much as Austin Kearns. Also keep your eyes on the injured guys on the waiver wire. I've had some very good luck grabbing guys who were cut because they got hurt (i.e. Rickie Weeks made it very easy to stash Lugo on the bench until he starts hitting, Kenny Rogers was set to return right when I was looking for another starter). Somebody like Lyle Overbay might be worth a grab when he gets close to returning.
  12. Congrats to you both.
  13. Last year I started June in 14th and ended June in 3rd, so it's still pretty early.
  14. I really thought making a draft priority of low WHIP pitchers would have worked better than it has to date. Twelve baserunners in two innings, Mr. Young? Yuck. And any time you feel like pitching a 1-2-3 inning is fine with me, Mr. Nathan.
  15. Gore's family was in tobacco, which he alludes to in the movie. He talks about how they were in denial about the health effects of tobacco until his sister became terminally ill with lung cancer, and makes the analogy with global warming in that we'll regret it if wait too long to acknowledge the truth and act.
