  1. The Mets can't afford to be protective of Pelfrey right now, it's as simple as that. He can do as little work between the end of the season and February as he likes. But the Mets can't win without him. While they're mentioning Joba Chamberlain, I really don't think jerking him around between the pen and the rotation is doing him any favors.
  2. Syracuse, simply because it's closer. (On a purely selfish note, I wouldn't mind seeing Citibank Park in Central Islip make a pitch for them. Watching future Mets would have much more appeal than watching past Mets. Last month I saw Fonzie, Everett, and the rest of the Ducks get beat by Jose Lima. How depressing.)
  3. John Sickels rated Guerra #2 as well (F-Mart was first, Gomez 3rd). And the Mets now have several guys who had been rated below Guerra that look better than him now (Niese, Murphy, Evans, probably Kunz as well). It's impossible not to be happy with the way things have panned out.
  4. Nymr makes a good point. Gomez is still very young, and probably should have spent another year in AAA. I don't think that he'll turn out like Reyes, but he has more talent than his numbers reflect and should improve off of this. Whatever future Humber has will be in the pen, I think. Mulvey hasn't embarrassed himself, but I think he needs one more year in the minors. He looks like he could be a decent back-of-the-rotation guy eventually. Guerra was the most highly rated prospect of the four, and has to be considered by far the biggest disappointment. He still has time to get back on track, but his stock has plummeted.
  5. It's also worth pointing out that if the season ends with the positions in the standings remaining what they are currently, we'll be seeing these guys again this time next month.
  6. Frayed Knot wrote: Not a great team to be starting three consectutive southpaws - seeing as how their lineup consists of Prince and a whole string of righties - but whatyagonnado! And I'll take that as a perfectly acceptable tradeoff for missing C.C.
  7. Throwing Mariano in was part wishful thinking, but last year was a bit down by his standards and he supposedly is getting older, so I figured why not throw his name into the ring. Oh well.
  8. I thought the ninth was mishandled. The count was 2-1 on Cantu, after he had bitten on a pitch well out of the strike zone. I'd have given him at least one more. Plus, if Heilman's control was starting to look off (and it absolutely WAS), somebody else had to come in if the bases wound up loaded.
  9. Nymr83 wrote: where Tim Lincecum in this discussion? he has only 3 losses, 200 k's and a 1.18 whip to go with his 2.48 ERA 15-3 with a terrible offense behind him. He certainly shouldn't be ignored.
  10. PS Sanchez still has a year before free agency. He stands a reasonable chance to improve the second year back from an injury, so I wouldn't be too quick to non-tender him. I'm not sure how much good he is for us right now, though. Like him or not, Schoeneweis is the most consistent of our currently available relievers. I'm not so keen on him either, but what are our options?
  11. I think the intentional walk gets overused in those situations. (Actually, I think it gets overused in general.) I don't like taking away the margin for error, and I think the ability to pitch effectively outside the strike zone is more important in those situations than the ability to turn two.
  12. I think the Mets would like to keep the 25 as it is until Sept. 1, and not have to demote anybody they might want to use in October. Which would mean Stokes gets Maine's next start, and from there we'll see.
  13. Interesting that the ERA's are so similar despite the difference in home runs.
  14. Nymr83 wrote: i wouldnt introduce it in the postseason either. use it in the AFL and then start using it next march for spring training games. But that would make sense.
  15. El Duque, perhaps?
  16. The home runs are significant, especially when you factor in the ballpark.
  17. What the Reds really have to answer for is trading Hamilton, whom they would have had under control for five more seasons, in the offseason while keeping the two guys in their walk years. I can't imagine Volquez would have been off the table if they had offered Dunn or possibly even Griffey instead.
  18. Anthony Reyes was there for the taking not so long ago. Minaya must be slacking. Like I said before, I think Al Reyes is more likely to have an impact than Luis Ayala. And the worst cast scenario is more of what we've already been getting, so I see no downside here.
  19. I see no point in dwelling on who said what about Delgado and when. You're right that there's no guarantee for his production the rest of the way, but he's earned the right to be our first baseman for the rest of the season. I'll worry about his option later, although I think he needs to more than he's done to this point before I'd pick it up.
  20. Assuming he's healthy, Al Reyes is more likely to be an asset than Luis Ayala at this point. But health could be the issue with Ayala as well.
  21. Part of that could be bad luck, but the Mets have some very up-and-down relievers. Heilman has alternated bewteen lights-out and nightmarish. Sanchez has been mostly solid, but when he's been off he's been way off. Joe Smith's ERA went from 2.90 on July 18 to 4.40 on August 11. When you give up runs in bunches, your ERA will look worse than your overall peripherals would imply.
  22. Garbage in, garbage out.
  23. It sounds like the agent's goal all along was to get his client drafted by a different team next year. Drafting is such an inexact science, though, I'd have probably budged even less than the Nationals did.
  24. I really don't know why anybody thought Tom Glavine was worth more than two draft picks (a first and a sandwich). Including the Braves. And now they won't even get the draft picks back when we sign Teixeira...
  25. I'm guessing we don't see Castillo or Anderson before Sept. 1.
