  1. Holliday could still post an OPS a bit above .900 playing in Oakland. It's a fair question, though, if one year of that from a leftfielder is worth an established closer, a young starting pitcher whose rookie year performance was better than his won-lost record by itself would suggest, and a toolsy outfielder who ranked high on most top prospect lists the last two years.

Even this year, Pelfrey was supposed to be left out, and Hernandez was going to be the #5. But Pelfrey WAS given the job in 07, and it turned out to be a year too early. I'm worried that a similar mistake will be made with Jon Niese.
  3. If we're going to be taking the payroll hit in an exchange of luggage, they should be the ones throwing in cheap players that we might actually want. They're looking to dump these guys for a reason.
  4. A month or so ago I thought Derek Lowe would present the best value of the free agent pitchers. But I hear more rumors about teams being interested in him than in anybody else. I no longer think he'll come that cheap. He's more consistent and durable than any other pitcher on the market besides CC, but at his age I wouldn't want to be the team that offers him a fourth year at $15M+ per.
  5. I think your only hope of trading him is to take someone else's luggage in return.
  6. I think Ryan Church staying healthy for a whole season would be all the upgrading our outfield needs.
  7. Hairston was a big asset to my fantasy team when he played, but he got hurt often. He also might want to go to a team that would guarantee him regular playing time and pay him accordingly. On the other hand, he might present good value as an everyday second baseman who could slide over if needed. I'm not sure I'd make him a top priority, but he's worth considering. Vizquel does still have a strong glove, but his .550 OPS is not a selling point. He might not be any better than Argenis at this point, and I see no point in paying for the name.
  8. It means they won't offer him a long-term deal. He's somebody who will almost certainly get signed to a nice contract even if there's compensation involved (I assume he's Type A?), and I doubt they'd panic over bringing him back for a year if it came to it. Stokes is far more likely than Parnell or Kunz to contribute positively at the major league level next year. Fuentes isn't bad, but I'd like to see what the trade market holds before I'd support handing out another big contract to a pretty good closer (or, in the case of K-Rod, an enormous contract to a very good closer) while we still have multiple needs to fill.
  9. I like Affeldt too. Lefty workhorses aren't common, plus his HR total would likely go down if he came here.
  10. That's true, but I was (perhaps mistakenly) assuming the D-Backs would offer. Cruz made only a little more than Ayala ($1.9M), and while he pitched 20 less innings, he did have much better numbers otherwise.
  11. I'm happy to see that Ollie is Type A. We figure to break even with first round picks. Speaking of which, Juan Cruz pitched 51 innings last year. He'd be the kind of reliever the Mets should avoid anyway, but he's absolutely not worth a first round pick. Not sure what to do about Ayala. Compensation would be nice, but I'm not sure I'd want him taking arbitration to stay here. We'd probably have to pay $2M, which I don't think he's worth.
  12. Delgado's option has officially been picked up.
  13. Can't argue.
  14. If I were them, I wouldn't fix what ain't broke. They'll need a DH and a leftfielder, but I wouldn't touch the pitching to get them.
  15. The Nationals officially outrighted Chad Cordero. It would be an interesting irony if he winds up here on a minor-league deal. Of course, it remains to be seen if he can still pitch.
  16. A good sell-high move for the Marlins. Jake has power, but his OBP sucks, he's still not a safe play against lefties, and an average-sized headstone would stop more ground balls at first base. Nunez is a pretty good reliever, too. Meanwhile, the Royals already had a bit of a crowd at DH and 1B before they got Jacobs. They have some younger, cheaper guys who are probably as good.
  17. Renteria is 33, and one year removed from hitting .332. I figure somebody will offer him a starting job. But if it's mid-January and he's still got no takers, then sure he's worth a look.

I think the worst-case scenario right now with Murphy is that he can play 2B well enough to fill in there as a reserve, which would enable the Mets to carry an extra outfield bat (i.e., a better hitter than a typical reserve infielder) on their bench. That's encouraging. The Mets have Santana tied up for a while, Maine under control for three more years, Pelfrey for at least four more years, Niese coming up in 09 or 10 and likely hanging around for a while, and presumably a free agent signing for multiple years. In that context, I would be neither surprised nor disappointed if they commit Parnell to the pen.

Thole walked more than he struck out at St. Lucie this year. The power's not there yet -- much less of an issue if he's a catcher and not a first baseman -- but the high OBP looks legit. He's likely two years away, though.
  20. Sounds like a good resume, just don't ask me how to pronounce the guy's name...

  22. ]The Mets aren't a safe bet because a) they probably lack the young talent necessary, and one official from another team said this past week that Peavy, who was born and still lives in Alabama, "hates" New York anyway. You almost get the sense that Davidoff copied the first part of that sentence from an article he wrote about Santana last year. As for the second part, well I guess we're supposed to assume that everybody from Alabama hates New York. And that the official from another team, assuming he really exists, knows Peavy well enough to say this. Or more likely, that said official is simply hoping that Peavy feels that way about New York because it would improve his own chances of landing him.
  23. Actually I remember reading somebody saying that Murphy had a positive +/- from the Fielding Bible, so that's already one misstatement. Anybody who treats Niese and Parnell as equivalent prospects needs to pay more attention. Plus, the Padres emphasized that they wanted pitching in return. Given that most of the league is rumored to be interested in Peavy, I would guess that Niese and Pelfrey would be necessary, but far from sufficient, inclusions. Among other things, that would still leave us with two rotation spots to fill. Peavy is guaranteed $63M over the next four years. That's not crazy money, but it's enough that it needs to be factored in when weighing the cost of the players involved, especially considering that there are a lot of starters on the free agent market this year.
  24. That deal didn't work out so well for St. Louis. I could see Mulder auditioning for scouts to try to demonstrate he's healthy again, assuming he's even at that point. But he might not be worth more than a minor league deal right now.
  25. Cross one free agent second baseman off the list, as Mark Ellis got two years and $11M (plus an option for 2011) to stay in Oakland. It's a great deal if he can manage to stay healthy, although "if" is the key word there. I'd have been willing to go above that if the price for Hudson got prohibitive, but I guess Ellis is happy where he is.
