AAA depth that's good to have, but you really hope you don't need.
  2. Right, I have no idea how much money the Mets are willing to spend. But I wouldn't have spent it on Cabrera.

  4. I guess Torii would rather play for a winner.
  5. Ashie62 wrote: Dickey and Flores for Justin Upton...just do it. Dickey "and" implies that Upton is the better player. He's not.
  6. On a somewhat related note, the Red Sox signed David Ross for two years and $6.2M. He's never been a full-time catcher, but for that price I'd have been willing to give him a try. Napoli will never hit .320 again, but his career line of .259/.356/.507 is still superb for a catcher. The Fielding Bible rated his catching defense at -4, which should not be a dealbreaker. I'm not sure what his market is, but I think there's a chance that teams are going to be too cautious in bidding for him, and the Mets shouldn't take it for granted that he's out of their range.
  7. I was really surprised that Mike Napoli wasn't offered a qualifying offer. If his stock is that deflated, the Mets might have an opportunity.

As if Thole catches the knuckleball particularly well. I'd have thought that even an AL scout would know more about Thole than that.
  10. Hell, he's already better than Nickeas. He's at least worth a look in ST. I wouldn't expect miracles, but it wouldn't take a miracle for him to improve our output from the catcher position.
  11. Paulino minus steroids turned out to be overvalued (at least by the Mets), and calling Quintanilla undervalued would require believing he ever had value in the first place. If they're looking for a market inefficiency, that's a dead end. As for Melky, the 2007-2010 version is worth less than what we paid Torres this past year. Give me a choice between Melky and Scott Hairston at the same price, and I take Hairston. I'd look for weak fielding catchers who can hit. (Miguel Olivo does not qualify.) Pitchers or hitters who were clearly hurt by their home park. (Scott Hairston is a good, positive example. Perhaps the Rangers would consider trading Alexei Ogando for Duda.)
  12. I honestly thought at the time that Ramon Ramirez would more than make up for the difference between Pagan and Torres. That's a mistake I hope to learn from. And I hope Alderson learns from it too. The interesting thing about Bochy is that when Wilson was healthy, he used Sergio Romo largely as a situational righty. And if you look at Romo's splits (a .482 career OPS against left-handed batters), that was just nuts. Still, at least Bochy deserves some credit for adapting.
  13. I'm not going to get too broken up if there is any "competition" for the services of Pelfrey or Torres.
  14. Wow this has been a terrible couple of days for closers. I need to stop going to bed early.
  15. He won't retire unless he's unconditionally released, which I think is what will eventually happen. As for any chance he'll get traded, even the Dodgers have to draw the line somewhere.
  16. Nine runs in 50 innings so far. As dramatic as the series has been, the Orioles' lineup has been embarrassing.
  17. Four innings pitched in four games for Darren O'Day, no hits, no walks. Sigh.

I just don't get how any result from a one game series involving two pretty good teams could surprise anyone. Right. The A's winning the division on a three-game seep after the Rangers had been leading for pretty much the entire season was stunning, especially given pre-season expectations. The Orioles, with an identical record, winning one game? About 50-50.

Because we needed an extra starter and we-- or rather, a non-false-hustling former member of "we"-- couldn't master basic roster management. Exactly. Pelfrey had to miss one start and Omar didn't want to put him on the DL because he would have miss another so he waived O'Day to call up Nelson Figueroa for a start. And then he waived Figueroa to replace him with Casey Fossum. And Bobby Parnell's future would have obviously been ruined if his first month in the majors were interrupted for a few days.
  21. The ump may have thought the SS was getting out of the way of the ball with intent to cause a force out, and then raised his hand. Honestly it looked like Kozma (who?) had the ball lined up the whole way until the very end, so I can see that aspect of it. I think the timing of the call is the biggest issue, because otherwise the play falls comfortably within the rules' description of what an infield fly is. It "should be called immediately," as the rule states, but does that mean it can't be called after a few seconds but before the ball hits the ground? That part of the rule is rather vague; i.e., it doesn't say it must be called immediately. And even if it were an egregiously blown call -- which, quite frankly, it isn't -- it does not even remotely begin to justify the disgraceful behavior of the Braves' fans.

  24. Congratulations to the Mohawk Red Flyers! (Whose team is that anyway?) So the site says arbitration begins Oct. 16. What does that mean?
