  1. Frank Franciso will have 14 saves and a 3.45 ERA? What an optimist!
  2. Ashie62 wrote: OK, help me out please...who is the likely starting LF as of now? The good news is that Alderson still has six weeks before ST to answer these questions (I'm assuming you're also going to ask about the starting CF and RF). Duda is the starting leftfielder as of now, but if I could swap him for somebody who has a bit less upside as a hitter but can actually play the outfield, I'd do it.
  3. John Maine signs a minor-league deal with the Marlins. Bookies in Vegas give him a 50% chance of being their Opening Day starter.
  4. I always found his eccentricities very endearing, and the DN piece from yesterday was very gracious and classy. He'd have been my favorite Met if he was mediocre. But I'm still not opposed to the deal.
  5. There were times when I thought Freel would make a good fit here in Queens. He was fast and versatile enough to make up for his lack of power, at least for a few years. One can only speculate what brought him to the point where he's take his own life, but it's sad for him and everybody close to him.
  6. Two months of Beltran netted us Zach Wheeler, and Beltran was a big injury risk too. If Johan is pitching like Johan (admittedly an enormous if), he should get us a similar catch.
  7. bmfc1 wrote: Great idea but I read that he's not available until mid-season. If the Wilpons truly have very limited funds to spend on FAs, then they can't use any of that on high-risk players. If he would take a minor-league salary with lots of incentives, then OK. You can use them on high-risk players (especially if the risk brings them in at a discount), but not on anybody who can't help the team still be in contention at the trade deadline or even re-establish his value by then. Pass.
  8. Liriano just got two years and $14M from the Pirates. I don't mind taking a flier on upside, but that's way more than a flier..
  9. G-Fafif wrote: Was also the offseason of Mike Stanton and Rey Sanchez. The full effect of the goings (Valentine, Fonzie, Ordonez) and comings (MFY Stanton, useless Sanchez, Marlin Floyd, Brave Gl@v!ne, invisible Nakamura, Con Ed's own Art Howe) left me in as bad a place as I've ever been, Metwise, culminating in the night of May 9 when Jesse Orosco came on for the Padres with two out in bottom of the ninth and the Mets' tying run on third and I reveled in his strikeout of Roberto Alomar. I was rooting for Jesse to gain one more save at Shea and didn't care at all -- at all -- if the 2003 Mets were his victims. It wasn't even "I can't lose either way" rooting. I remember debating whether the Mets beating up on Orosco in that game would have made me feel worse than the Mets losing -- and I didn't come up with a firm answer.
  10. metirish wrote: Healy would go on and on about how Alomar was the greatest 2nd baseman ever..... Well if you needed a convincing argument against Alomar, there you go.
  11. Considering that he only got one year last offseason and wasn't really that good for the Nats, he can't complain. Cubs fans might, however.
  12. I'd hate to think they would have been that hasty clearing out their other options, but Phillips had been getting more and more desperate by then and Duquette wound up being even worse. I also can't imagine how the fans would have treated Nakamura if he couldn't get off the interstate. Kaz Matsui was a small fraction of the player the front office made him out to be, but he was at least competent.
  13. G-Fafif wrote: To get a Kelly Shoppach, sometimes you have to give up a Pedro Beato. Well it just seemed odd at the time (and still does) for a non-contending team to ship somebody they had control over for at least five years in exchange for a two-month rental.
  14. I don't think he ever pitched for us at the major league level, but Jason Vargas just got shipped to Anaheim; Kendrys Morales takes Interstate 5 all the way up to Seattle in return.
  15. I'd claim him back, but I still think he must have worn his welcome out with somebody to get traded in the first place.
  16. Nothing wrong with this deal. Cowgill's 2011 was very good, and he's an excellent defender. I wouldn't expect him to anchor any playoff drives, but he's a cheap, potentially good option for a fifth outfielder.
  17. So he has the intelligence and maturity of a typical 20-year-old, in other words.
  18. There are a number of seviceable starters we could get for a one-year deal, and Alderson might be able to act quickly on that front. The outfield will probably take more time, but I hope a decent plan is in place.
  19. The only Met to catch a no-hitter.
  20. I think the discussions of Nickeas as a pitching prospect turned catching prospect on this forum were more noteworthy than anything he actually did on the field.
  21. I can see him providing us with two or three games of entertainment throwing the knuckleball. And the Mets might even win one of those games. Otherwise, he's just roster depth, nothing to get excited about or to burn Omar in effigy over. Come on, I never said only two or three games of entertainment!
  22. Like I told Seawolf, Dickey is my favorite Met since Piazza. But I think it's clear that given the choice between offering him an extension and getting a "haul" for him, Alderson wanted the haul. There are perfectly valid baseball reasons for doing that, and this deal looks on paper like a haul. My emotions are very mixed, but I think the trade will make the Mets better in the long run.
  23. metirish wrote: Pelfrey joins the Twins says Heyman. For $4M plus incentives, which is more than I would have gone in for. There are still plenty of similar options. Moving on...
  24. I still can't wait to see Robbie play like a Hall of Famer in a Met uniform.
  25. Fangraphs gives $4.5M per WAR, meaning Dickey has been worth $54M over the past three years for the Mets. (Of course, to be sabermetrically anal, the 12.1 WAR is based on ERA, when Fangraphs bases its WAR on FIP, or fielding-independent pitching. FIP is one of those bullshit stats, predicated on the notion that all balls put in play are created equal, that has become important because the people who made it said it was important. Plenty of good pitchers -- including Dickey and Gio Gonzalez -- consistently outperform their FIP by quite a bit.)
