  1. Neither Murphy nor Wright gave Young much chance to steal. I guess that's a re-adjustment that needs to be made. Marcum has a 5.43 ERA and a 3.05 FIP. That's a really large discrepancy. Hopefully that means he's due for some good luck.

I immediately thought about the "Know Your Place Rook" episode between Wagner and Milledge. I wonder what the media would have done if Milledge had stood up to Wagner in such a manner.
  3. Being merely "awful" makes him good enough to start in center for us and lead off. Young has had some good stretches, though, and his minor league numbers say he can do better at this level than he's shown to this point. He was a very prolific walker in the minors, which hasn't translated to this level yet. He had a bad leg injury at the end of last year and only now seems to be getting the feel for stealing bases again. There's more upside with him than McHugh, I think. I've got no problem with this.
  4. Good hustle and lazy defense. We'll take the run. And Harvey walks the leadoff hitter.
  5. People are funny.
  6. Arguably the turning point in the Mets' fortunes.
  7. I wouldn't call an .811 OPS poor. Not difference-making, especially when defense is factored in, but not poor. Ruben was walking more and striking out less relative to previous seasons, and not doing much worse where extra base hits were concerned. Basically he's been hitting less singles. I think he's been unlucky to this point with the bat, and I wouldn't demote him when he comes off the DL. His lapses on the defensive end are a bigger concern. Center has been a black hole, but is anybody really surprised by that? You might as well platoon Niewenhuis and Lagares and at least take the defense. The fact that Byrd has a .781 OPS makes you shudder at what the rest of our rightfielders have been doing. While I doubt he can keep this up, we don't have a better option right now.
  8. My guess is that it's a correctable problem. Whether or not it gets corrected quickly is another story.
  9. Rotoworld mentioned that the only previous player to hit four homers in his first five games was our own Mike Jacobs. That's sufficient perspective for me. Obviously the guy has a high ceiling, but he's playing above that ceiling now and the league will make adjustments. It's also noteworthy that with all that payroll, it took a call-up to make the Dodgers interesting. (They still have as many losses as the Mets.)
  10. I'm finally crawling back towards mediocrity, but it would be nice if I could go a week without somebody hitting the DL.
  11. Blanks was spared the trip to AAA on account of Yonder Alonso's injury. Still, if he's their 26th guy (he was set to go down because Maybin was activated), I can't imagine he couldn't be had for a reasonable price.
  12. Fangraphs and Bill James have him as about average so far this year. He's been playing mostly right this year, too.

Calling him an injury risk would be understating things, but 20 homers in 420 ABs while playing home games in Petco screams upside, and it's not clear the Pads have room for him even if he's healthy. He's actually been a plus defensive outfielder, proving that converted first basemen aren't doomed to be hopeless. I bet he'd cut down on the Ks if he could just get regular at-bats, too. I'd offer Valdespin (the Padres were rumored to be looking for a lefthanded reserve infielder, plus Minaya likes him). He'd basically be a cheap lottery ticket, but that might be the direction the Mets need to go at this point. Blanks just got demoted with a .796 OPS. From the Mets' perspective, that's comical.

Playing the infield in in the first inning against the Marlins, and then leaving Scott Rice in when he clearly didn't have it with the bases loaded against a righty, lost him a big chunk of my sympathy.
  15. Look, catchers! Two thumbs up. The good news: Jordan Brown can only lunge after a breaking pitch and turn it into a back-breaking double once in a series. To quote a famous Floridian, even the losers get lucky sometimes.

  18. Buck delivered, sort of. I strongly disagree with taking Gee out here.
  19. Frayed Knot wrote: Ashie62 wrote: Once Ike is behind in the count he is an automatic out.. Once Ike is in the batters box he's an automatic out. Well he's almost always getting behind, so you're both right. The key to whatever recovery Ike will have is strike one. As in, don't let anybody throw a fastball to get it, and don't go fishing for what would be ball one.
  20. We don't have the means to deal for an All-Star in his prime and still have a farm system. Hell, we owe whatever farm system we have to trading a few of our own All-Stars. Bringing in an outfielder who merely deserves to be on a major league team would be an upgrade, though, so there's really no reason to be all-or-nothing about this.
  21. Does Ike still have options, or would he have to be placed on waivers?
  22. Edgy MD wrote: So, what's worse than going to bed after a four-strikeout game? Going to bed after a four strikeout game that it isn't over, knowing you may have another few strikeouts in you before the books are closd. And knowing that the conclusion of the game may have been the one thing separating him you from an all-expenses-paid overnight flight to Las Vegas.
  23. Horrible slide. I think the play was a lot closer than the TV guys did, though. An embarrassing muff by Duda on what thankfully was a foul ball proves inconsequential, and we're tied after 4.
  24. Dave Magadan played for the Cubs? Ah yes, Mel "the Smell" Rojas...
