  1. And "Up Periscope" with Kelsey Grammar has a plank walking scene, but I don't think you would call it a pirate movie.Later
  2. Welcome. And, as AL Jolson said in The Jazz Singer, "you ain't see nnothing yet."Later

  4. a long time since I parsed a sentence. (As you probably can tell from my posts)In fact, in those days it was called diagraming a sentence. But, without looking it up, here is my take on the "Thy" VS "Thine" question.Just from the way they're used:Thy acts like an adjective, modifying a noun, as in "Thy neighbor"Thine acts like an adverb, modifying an adjective, as in "To thine own self be true" (own being the adjective that modifies the noun self)So, based only on that, seems like "Thy" is correct. You can now rest peacefully, knowing you have not upset the dieties of Grammar Universe. 5. Cubas.Considering the impressions we get in reading about some of the agents, he must be a real doozy to have had MLB cut him out of the action.Later
  6. When Bill Veeck bought the St. Louis Browns, the first thing he did was put the entire team on waivers to see if there was any interest among other teams in his players. Not one of them got claimed.Later
  7. I mentioned that in another thread - a few weeks ago. I think I posed it as a trivia question - something like "What Met minor leaguer hadn't given up an earned run in the last two years?"Bacani had some scoreless innings last year, too.Later

Yes, and my first post was totally from memory. I said "of that era". So I missed Clemens by one year. Big deal. But I got Raffy Right, and Meyers, before anyone else did.I waited a long while before opening up the book to provide the full list, because it seemed all other posting had ceased.Good to know at least some of the "leetle grey cells" are still working.Later
  9. Earlier in the thread, someone suggested that Cliff Floyd could be moved to first base,Does he like playing there? Is he any good at it?Seems to me that if the team could make a Manny deal involving Cameron, and move Floyd to first, that would mean the search would be on for a left fielder (assuming Diaz in right). And one of those those might be easier to find than a first baseman.Later
  10. Gregg Olson (Olsen?)Later
  11. Wolf, nice choices.Do we get to vote on which of them we'd like to see him do?Later
  12. Wasn't there a movie called "The Buccaneer" with Yul Brynner? What did you think about that one?Later

Yo, Ace.Go back and read my edited post, and the time of the edits. (and the reason for the edit).I got Meyers, and got the answer of Palmiero, too. And, according to the Sporting News Baseball Register, the Mets drafted Williams in trhe 27th round of the 1983 draft. he was drafted by Sf in the first round of the 1986 draft, and he signed with them. And the Mets drafted Roger Clemens on the 12th round of the 1981draft. It was on June 8th, BTW. He was later drafted by the Red Sox in the first round of the 1983 draft.I thought the Mets also drafted Williams, but now that I think back , maybe they were going to until he told them he wouldn't sign with them if they did. Here's the complete listof the 1982 draftees who eventually made the majors:GoodenFloyd YoumansRoger McDowellTracy JonesGerald youngGreg Olsen (the catcher, not the pitcher with the similar name)RAFFY PALMIEROJoe RedfieldMickey WestonBarry LyonsJeff Richman (sp?)Wes Gardner. In the secondary pahse, they drafted Randy MeyersANDIn the "January Phase" of the 1982 draft, the Mets drafted Kal Daniels.Later

  15. Thank you for the corrections, but neither of you answered my question. Can you think of other instances where the Mets traded someone they might have needed in the future (they couldn't have predicted Stearns' injuries), sucked it up with sub-par replacements for a while, then got a player who was better than the one they might have kept?Later

Edgy, Raffy Palmiero, was the drafted, but not signed by the Mets, 1982 player you mentioned.IIRC, other players of that era who were drafted by the Mets but who refused to sign (go back to school) included Bruce Hurst, Roger Clemens and Matt Williams. Can you imagine a staff with both Clemens and Seaver? Until he retired, Williams always had a no-trade to the Mets clause in his contracts. The one player the Mets drafted and didn't sign that year was Kyle Hartshorn, but I believe they drafted him again, and he did put in some time in their organization, but never made the majors. The secondaty phase player was reliever Randy Meyers.LaterEDIT: Had a power failure while I was typing this. Came back to finish it.
  17. Someone mentioned the name Jody Davis, and I decided to do some research. The Mets had John Stearns, so decided to trade Jody,a catcher, for lefty reliever Ray Searage, who lasted one year with the club. As a result, for a while, the Mets catching corps consisted of Mike Fitzgerald and Junior Ortiz (who actually combined for NO home runs one year) while Davis went on to hit 20+HR with 80+ RBI for a few years and make an All Star Team. But if the Mets had held onto Davis, would they have ever traded for Gary Carter? Can you think of any other Mets trades that opened up a hole that eventually led to them getting a much better player, but a year or two later?Later
  18. Y'know what I just noticed? One of their contributing authors has visited the CPF.Later
  19. So that means he has to pitch 57 more innings in 10 more starts. Not out of the question. But if they go to a six man rotation that gets a little tougher to attain.Later
  20. Once that option kicks in, I think unloading Glavine will be easier said than done.Later
  21. Early edition of Monday's Daily News says that if Carlos has to go on the DL, Valent will be called up.Later
  22. I'd bet that if Boss George or Charlie Finley owned this team, Williams' stuff would have been packed up and waiting for him by the time he got to the clubhouse after the game. Later
  23. IIRC, Jackson hooked up in some epic extra inning pitching duels with Jim Maloney of the Reds. Not sure if any of those went longer, though.Later
  24. According to Eddie C on the Fan this afternoon, the doctors who have examined Carlos say it requires surgery and has to be done within one week of the injury or not at all. He will be examined when the team returns to New York. If the docs agree with that diagnosis, he will have it done.Later
