  1. Thanks, Irish. The key word there is kid.Scouts continue to gush over his tools and potential. He continues to develop, not like last year's prospect Alihaji Turay, who has not developed as predicted.Later
  2. 83 - Humber is out indefinitely with arm problems (did he have surgery?).I'm not exactly counting on him to be healthy just yet. (Tim Leary. David Proctor flashbacks)Hey, if we're talking about the future, what about that kid catcher they signed last week? Think his name is Alberto Castillo. Great move for the future.Yes, I'm a sarcastic bastard.Later
  3. Valadius wrote:Forget Lambin, please... his defense is subpar. He has 16 errors this year at Norfolk.IIRC, Frank White won the American League Gold Glove one year when he committed 18 errors.Ya' never know. They've come up with a whole bunch of defensive statistics since. But you still have to watch the guy play.Later
  4. I was responding to the author's contention that if an anti-Semitic banner was posted, the guards would break speed records to have it removed.I was recounting days, that I experienced, when that wasn't necessarilly the case. And yes, it was in the 50's.(How else could it have happened at the three ballparks I mentioned?)And yes, times were much different then. And yes, my post was a full of stereotypes.ButI even asked if that would happen today. I didn't say it would. But I saw those things happen for myself. Many times.Later
  5. Very nice bench. Needs a power hitter, though. The problem is, I wish the regulars were healthier/ better so we wouldn't have had to see so much of them. And here's where I will admit that I was wrong about Marlon Anderson. He has been much better than I ever thougth he'd be.How do I cook this crow?Later
  6. "Can you imagine if someone showed up at Jewish night with a sign that read, “Judaism Is Sin / Christ Can Set You Free”? The security guards would set a new land speed record getting to whomever held that sign, forcing them to take it down."Not necessarilly. One of the reasons I never became a Yankee fan was when I was a kid, my friends and I used to go to games at each of the NY ballparks and sit in the grandstand. Then, when the game was in the seventh inning or so, try to sneak down into the reserved/ box seats. These were usually weekday games, the seats were never full.In Ebbets Field and the Polo Grounds, no problem. But in Yankee Stadium, it seems that the ushers and cops would let the blond, fair and red headed kids with freckles into the boxes. But if you had dark hair, dark skin, or wore a Yarmulke, they never let you move down.Would they do that today?Who knows? But the author can't jump to conclusions like that. LaterEDIT: How could I ever misspell Polo Grounds?
  7. He likes it here?Quick!Huddle up!We have to figure out what we're doing wrong before he gets back.Later

    Speed Kills

The next time I wonder if its ok to hijack a thread, I'll re-read this one.You proved that it is.(And the mental image of the Buggs Bunny blowup doll isn't going to fade too easily, either)Later
  9. Edgy DC wrote:Sweep, sweep, sweep.Edgy,I have to warn you.I live in Connecticut.I checked the State laws. What you just did is considered justifiable homicide up here. You have just been warned. Later
  10. This is all Howie Rose's fault.(Or whoever was doing the pre-game radio show- my car radio had static) He mentioned that if the Mets won, it would be a SWEEP. Doesn't the idiot know the old baseball superstition that you never, as in NEVER, use that word? You can think it, but you should never speak it. It is one of the most famous baseball jinxes. He should know by now how superstitious players, and fans, are. How could he?Its so dumb, even Fran Healey wouldn't ever utter that word. Later
  11. The first one who I actually considered to be antagonistic and confrontational as well as anti-Met was Lee Weyer. Not only that, but he was a bully. If you disagreed slightly, you got the thumb. I hated that big fat bastard. But, you're right. I'm noticing a steady decline in umpiring quality in the past few years. And Hernandez is a real piece of work.Later
  12. Thanks.Nice work.I think (as of the last time I read it) that in 1972, Steve Carlton set the record for highest percentage of a team's games won in the modern era. (Maybe all time)Say what you want about McCarver pumping up that Gibson year, I think he was Lefty's catcher in '72 as well.Later

  14. Soupy, thanks for your vote of confidence. Can I go lie down now?I'm a wreck from trying to live up to your estimation of my skills. Then again, at my age, its easier to remember ten year old stuff than what I ate for breakfast. :)Later

  17. I'm sending you my therapist's bill.LaterEdit. I saw your comment about them being active.SS - Jose ValentinLater

(if that's what you're intimating)Yep, it was of his own choosing. As Edgy said above, he was the one who bailed out when he didn't find whatever he was hoping to find when he joined. Didn't mean to intimate anything. Sorry if you took it that way.Later
  20. The shortstop wouldn't have been Andujar Cedeno, would it?Later

  24. Of course its ok to wear a glove. You don't want to look like a schmuck if you muff an easy one in full view of a national viewing audience.Later
