  1. You're right. But what I said about who each team went ofter and signed is still valid.Later
  2. Can someone of the Mets please figure out how to pitch to Randa (is he still mad at us for trading him?) and the entire Giles family?Later
  3. Wow! That was painful. Its like a 40-something person being reminded every year about how they threw up at the table during Thanksgiving dinner when he was three years old.In general, the Met started out with veteran (name) players and mostly young pitchers. The Colt .45s started out with (mostly) young players and veteran pitchers. The wirter missed the first post-expansion draft. The Mets selected Ed Kranepool. Those other guys selected Rusty Staub. 'Nuff said about how Paul Richards and his staff were prepared, while Weiss went for a local / "name' talent.Interesting that the next installment will stop at year six. I wonder if they're going to talk about 1969 in a later exciting episode? Thanks.Later
  4. Friends of mine heard him speak at a Washinbgton DC baseball dinner a few years ago, and said he was a great story teller. His mind was still good.Later
  5. Negro League player.http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baseball/2005-08-11-radcliffe-obit_x.htmLater
  6. And why is her brother wearing a f'n Yankees cap?I guess the YES network reaches Key West.Later
  7. When I read that Reyes would be getting the day off, I wondered who would be playing short in his place. I completely forgot that Woodward had been a regular at that position for the Jays. I feel a little better now, and am trying to remove the image of Jose Offerman at shortstop (his original position) from my mind.Later
  8. IIRC, the reason he went to Binghamton was to see if his surgically repaired arm was ok. He had mastered AA the year before his injury. Seems to me that he should have at least been brought up to AAA by mid season once he showed he was healthy.BTW_ about his reputation for not having a good arm. This year's Baseball America scouting book commented that his problem lies in taking a long time to straighten up before throwing. There was nothing said about his arm strength or accuracy.Later
  9. And he knew how to bunt for a hit.Later
  10. Good Morning, Mr. Phelps.About my next mission:If I accept, will the Secretary disavow any knowledge? Will this message self-destruct in 20 seconds? Can you provide me with pictures so I can select my team? Was there ever a more memorable theme song than the one written by Lalo Shifrin for Mission Impossible? Why did Barbara Bain ever marry Martin Landau? So many questions. So little time.Later
  11. Just from the early days alone, you could have the following folks who had a decent number of ABs:c- Cannizzaro .183 1965 ; JerryGrote .196 19661B Ed Bouchee .161 1962 2B Chuck Hiller .093 19663B Cliff Cook .142 1983ss Al Moran .193 1963 (I still think this award should be named after him)OF Johnny Lewis .193 1966OF Don Bosch .140 1966OF Amos Otis .151 in his 1969 cuppa' joeLaterEDIT: corrected the Johnny Lewis date. Best as I can fugure, he wasn't around during the year of the Norman Invasion.
  12. According to a small item in today's Daily News, Jeff Duncan asked for, and was granted his release from Binghamton yesterday.I wouldn't be surprised if the Yankees don't sign him to a minor league contract for a look-see.Later
  13. Would the best writer covering the "girly" team be Shirley Povich? He was the father of Mauray, and a sportswriter who covered the old Washington Senators.Later
  14. Wasn't that the first time the Mets has won a game that Offerman had started?Later
  15. Why? You wanted him to be town specific?Later
  16. I seem to recall it was in the back of a van. That was at the time when the phrase "Keep on truckin' " was a fad. That year during Banner Day, some kids brought a banner to the parade that was like a scroll, supported on two poles. When they entered the field, it said "Mets - Keep on Truckin'".Then, as they got toward the center of the field, they continued to unfurl the banner to reveal a picture of the back of a truck/ van with two pairs of feet sticking out - one pair Black, the other, White. The security guards quickly escorted them off the field, to the jeers of the fans (directed at the security guards).Later

    7K

I wonder. Has Mom ever run a 7K?Later
  18. So, are you saying that Michael Jackson has been coating himself with white chocolate?Edgy, that is almost as strange as the comparisons made between Abraham Lincoln and John Kennedy.I haven't seen the movie, nor do I plan to. Does Depp wear only one glove in it?Later
  19. Thanks for the info, folks.Later
  20. Today's Dail News said that Reyes' 20 game hitting streak brings him within 4 of the Met all-time record, shared by two people. But didn't Mike Vail have one that lasted around 30 games in his rookie year?Later
  21. Why do I get the feeling that before his film career is over, Johnny Depp will have worn more weird costumes and makeup than the entire cast of The Wizard of Oz combined? Can't he just play an average joe? Just once?Later
  22. He was known for running his pitching staff into the ground in the failed attempt to win a pennant in 1964. But he was one of the best in-game managers of his era. He was always willing to do something different. One example: When Jim Bunning was on the Pirates, the Phillies couldn't buy a run off him. He would consistently pitch well against them. One day, Mauch had the first four batters bunt for hits against him. Bunning was so shocked by seeing the bases loaded and a run in that he grooved one to the next batter. From that game on, the Phillies handled him pretty well. Mauch had gotten inside his head and taken him out of his comfort zone.Later

    White Sox

My frined Shoeless Don the White Sox fan told me that Iguchi came to the States with a similar reputation as Kaz Matsui- an infielder with a home run swing. But when he got here, he immediately modified his game to play small ball. He hits behind the runner and does all the "little ball" things required of him by his manager's style of play. My friend adds that fans watching the team every day will tell you that Iguchi is their MVP.Later
  24. WP, and you should know that I answered that with all the haughty indignity of the Muppett Eagle. (Do eagles have a cheek to put their tongue into?)Got it.Later
