  1. On Monty Python's Flying Circus, they used to have a running gag about how you don't expect the Spanish Inquisition.Jet fans do.The American Football showed me the way toward the Mets. Yes, that league showed me that you could have fun rooting for upstart new teams ald leagues. When I heard that the AFL was being formed, I decided to see how it was, and became a fan not only of the new lwague but of the Titans (now Jets). So, instead of trying to retrofit my baseball fandom into an existing franchise, I eagerly waited for those New "Metropolitans".So it was logical that I rooted for the Islanders (a young expansion team) and the Nets (born to that new American Basketball League).Still do.Later

  3. At some point I'm probably going to call him Marcus, so I'll do my mea culpas now.Later
  4. I re-reading "War and Peace In the Space Age" by General James Gavin. It originally came out around 1960. The author looked at what had happened to the French at Viet Nam and predicted that future wars would not involve large armies in face-to-face combat. He argued for a Mobile, Air-Transportable force that could respond to small, non conventional wars anywhere in the world at a momemt's notice. It took the US several painful years after the book came out ot realize he was correct. But until that happened, he was considered an "odd-ball" by his Pentagon cohorts. The points he makes are still meaningful today in terms of being able to rapidly responsd to insurgencies and terrorism.Later
  5. All players on the DL have to either be added to the 40 man roster or released by the time of the Rule V draft (December?).Later
  6. Thanks,Not sure about family logistics yet.Right now its a definite maybe.Later
  7. Kase,You going to be at stormville drinking your pal's beer?My daughter told me she wants to go.Later
  8. ="Valadius"]All comments, critiques, and ideas are welcome. Ok, the posts were too long. Eveybody knows that substance abuse programs usually involve only 12 steps.JKGreat stuff.EDIT: But if this was part of your program, now you have to post one per day. One day at a time.Later
  9. "cranky"?Interesting choice of words.I don't remember my pinkie ever crying or speaking to me.Later
  10. jb, thank you for very clearly explaining why this was different.I agree with each of your points. And as Rotblatt said, he did it the right way - to Willie directly instead of to the press.Later
  11. ]Well, I don't think anyone has said anything in a manner that's going to scare Zvon away. And I trust Zvon to take the suggestion in the spirit in which it's intended. Zvon, change your blinking sig or it looks like Elster will disembowel you.Do you think that's scary enough?Later
  12. Since Zambrano has already said that he would go to the bullpen, Heilmann has done well out of the pen, and Ishii should never pitch another inning for the Mets, your order looks ok to me.Later
  13. Petey lobbying to Omar to keep Jacobs with the team is better than Tom Glavine lobbying to Duquette to add Mike Glavine to the roster. At least Jake (the nickname he likes, and has tattooed on his back * ) might be the future, not a mediocrity like Glavine's brother.Later*= from a story in today's Daily News early edition.
  14. I lived in Upper Manhattan during that era, but I was always a Brooklyn fan. Later
  15. seawolf17 wrote:I should have been more specific... San Francisco Giants, NOT NY Giants. Mays doesn't count. Sorry.Huh?Mays played in SF from 1958 until he came to the Mets.I don't recall Schmidt being portly.Good report.Later
  16. But can he ride a bicycle?Later
  17. Maybe its just because ball players have always been taught to respect their elde....., nahhhh.Even I don't believe that bullshit I started to type.Elster, please continue to speculate about asshead all you want. You won't get a complaint from me.Later
  18. Valadius wrote:Why does Rick Peterson always have his jacket on, even when it's 100 degrees out? He's keeping his pitching arm warm, in case they need him.Later
  19. Roberto has been quoted a few times that he would like to catch one game in the majors before he retires. He last played that position when he was at UCONN.Should he get that chance?Later

  21. He will be going to the Arizona Fall League.MIke Jacobs is also scheduled to go, but I think you get disqualified if you have spent any time on a major league roster.I saw the list earlier today, and don't remember where. But I think I saw Chase Lambin's name on it too.EDIT: Here's the full AFL roster:http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/2005afl/roster_gcr.html Later
  22. No Zvon, I saw him play, too. He was one of the most exciting players I ever saw.If he had been the first Latin-American player to make it to the big leagues, a stronger case could be made for doing it. But others came before him.Good idea, but a sad no.Later
  23. Willets Point wrote: What's the SC on that?SC???Later
  24. Nor I.HAIL!!Back to topic. Since he's no longer active, then can we at least name the team in honor of Paul O'Neill? And would it be possible to name Lou Piniella the manager?Later
  25. Back to round numbers.Zambrano 2 Castro 2 Wright 2 Diaz 2 Jacobs 2Later
