    So Taguchi

I just happened to check out his career numbers. After a So So career (I couldn't resist) in Japan, his numbers (avg, obp and slg) have actually been marginally better during his stay in the majors. http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/T/So-Taguchi.shtml Maybe he has shown that it isn't just the star position players who can come here and do fairly well. Or that Japanese baseball isn't as far below the current level of play in the majors as some may think. Later

    So Taguchi

I'm still having flashbacks from one spring training when he had something like 8 or 9 straight hits against the Mets. And sometimes, it hasn't been how many hits, or how far they went, but when he got them (in rallies). Then again, who was it who drove in the only Cards run last night? Later

    So Taguchi

That pesky fucker has been a real thorn in the side of the Mets for a long time. If I were managing the team he's playing for, I'd give him the chance for as many at bats against the Mets as I could, too. Later

Check out Roberto Clemente. His OBP for his first few years was terrible. Later
  5. Remember the discussions about signing Vlad Guerrero when he was a free agent? The nay-sayers said he "had a chronic bad back". Beltran seems to keep getting quad injuries. Later
  6. His lucky beads: http://news.yahoo.com/s/livescience/20070618/sc_livescience/80000yearoldbeadsshedlightonearlyculture No wonder he hasn't been hitting. Later
  7. I'll do my part. I'm gonna' have Equal in my coffee today instead of Splenda. C'mon everybody. Pitch in. Our lads need your help. Later
  8. FK, as someone who read Young over the years, I can say that seemed to be true. Later
  9. In his book The Long Season, ex-player now sportswriter Jim Brosnan mentioned Young. He said Young was one of a group of irreverent young reporters nicknamed "the Chipmunks". IIRC others in that group included Leonard Koppett and Leonard Schecter. Brosnan states that they were the first to go into the clubhouse, listen to the chatter, then report on the behind the scenes side of baseball. I got the impression that the players really liked, and opened up, to them. Brosnan also said (I paraphrase) that management can buy the sportswriters by giving them a free lunch. Later

  11. I noticed he had his first "hold" of the season last week. They're throwing him right into the fray, not just using him as a mop up man.Later

  13. Yancy Street Gang wrote: Pat Zachry is getting a lot of attention on the UMDB today, 30 years later. Pat Zachry was announced as an upcoming guest on one of the NY Sports talk stations today, in honor of the 30th anniversary of the trade. It may have been the Beningo/Evans show. I had to go to work before I heard him. Later
  14. iramets wrote: The hindsight in this traumatic deal still runs amazingly high. I've been mulling over the concept of getting Guerrero and Sutcliffe from the Didgers for Seaver: if that would have been the structure of the trade, and we would have improved the club vastly, I wonder if we'd be remembering our initial feelings with such justified outrage, or if it would just be "I was a little ticked off, but clearly it was a great move, LGM, etc." To many Mets fans of the time (there are fewer and fewer of us now) who had felt the pain of losing our team to Los Angeles, losing "the franchise" to that same city would have been unbearable trauma. Later
  15. Edgy, you're right about Johnson. He wasn't even getting good swings on 85 MPH fastballs. Too bad Lastings hurt his foot just as he was getting hot at AAA. He would have had a nice chance to show what he can do if he had been called up when Alou got hurt. Later
  16. Willets Point wrote: Good gravy! Is there no end to the constant Yankee discussion on this Mets forum? Doesn't matter, Willets. We could ignore them for an entire season and they still won't fade away. Later
  17. Edgy DC wrote: So that places the choice among Ledee, Johnson, and Gotay. Ledee would have to go through waivers so I guess they wanted to get a real look at how he's doing before risking losing him. Y'mean they didn't get a good enough look in over 800 games and 2000 AB so far in his major league career? Later
  18. ="Willets Point"]I just notice on the scoreboard that Minnesota played Washington today and was wondering if that is the Nationals first match up against the former Senators? Have they played the Rangers? I was at RFK stadium when the expansion Washington Senators played the Minnesota Twins. Time flies. Later

Iubitul wrote: These kids are taught at a young age to throw different pitches in an attempt to miss the bat - so instead of just building up arm strength and stamina at a formative age, they are putting more stress on their arms by attempting to throw pitches that their arms are not fully ready to handle. Apparently the message is finally gettng through. I was in the park a few weeks ago and heard this conversation: Kid: "How do you throw a curve ball?" Adult: "How old are you?" Kid: "Nine" Several adults who had heard the exchange: "You're too young!" Later
  20. Last night, ex-Met farmhand Lenny DiNardo threw 6 shutout (2H, 6BB, 0K) innings against the Red Sox for Oakland, winning the game over DiceK. It was a good night for "soft tossing lefties" to pitch effectively. Later
  21. Utility man Chris Basak was brought up by the Yankees today and catcher Raul Cassanova was brought up by Tampa Bay. Both were once Mets minor leaguers. Later
  22. If they're so easy to control, how come they're all"first ball, fastball" hitters? Later
  23. The fans at Fenway were allowed to wear those masks. But at whose authority were Bonds/ steroid signs at Shea confiscated last week? The MLB thought police? The pro-steroid lobby? Some asshole in the Mets front office without a sense of humor? A sense of ..... (fill in your own word here)? This demands an investigation. Later
  24. Back to Clemens. The reports say he has a "Tired Groin". Are they sure they're not talking about A-Rod? LAter
  25. Another key date will be July 2. That is when teams will be able to sign International free agents. Four outfielders of interest from the Dominican Republic are: Jose Jose - Outfielder - NO! Not a misprint. But his song is already taken. Ricardo Garcia - Outfielder Itaniel Guzman - Outfielder Anderson Pujols - Outfielder Later
