  1. Who will step into the rotation when ElDuque has his regularly scheduled DL stint? Park? Sele? Humber? Someone else? How well will LoDuca perform in the #6/7 spot in the batting order (if he stays there)? I'm establishing the over/under for his RBI total at 58. Later
  2. Spring training is the place to try out new things, isn't it? You'd think they could try a new way of pitching to Ryan Zimmerman. The guy thinks he's Mike f'n Schmitt when he hits against the Mets. Later
  3. Oops. From today's Daily News: ]The Mets optioned Jorge Sosa to Triple-A New Orleans, making him a $1.25 million minor leaguer. They had guaranteed the contract Sosa signed Jan. 16, so they couldn't have cut him a check for 45 days' pay and parted. Sosa had an 8.53 ERA. Later
  4. The news made me want to throw up in my mouth. I felt that Smith would be with the team out of spring, but if he wasn't really ready for the majors, he clould be replaced by Sanchez when he returned. This could have a ripple effect, with Adkins now making the team - subtraction by addition. I hope Smith is ready. Later
  5. Edgy DC wrote: I think we can be hopeful that he'd get a look-see. Some funky catchers get called up in emergencies. And other "funky" catchers incredibly stay around in the majors for a long while - Alberto Castillo, Charlie O'Brien and Bob Uecker immediately come to mind. Later
  6. willie has been quoted several times this Spring about how Schoenweis has been a closer, so I would guess he will get more late inning appearances than Feliciano does. Later
  7. Johnny Dickshot wrote: Can Ben Johnson play first base? A RH backup there seems to be the only "strategic" argument in Franco's favor anymore. We're still trying to figure out if he can play the outfield. I was listening to the radio yesterday when the announcers spent a bit of time telling us what a curious route he took on the hit scored a double against Pelfrey in the 4th (?) inning. Of course, it didn't help matters when Alou got a late start on that ball, too.Later
  8. Edgy, During yesterday's game, one of the radio guys said the Mets currently have 38 players on their 40 man roster. We know you've maintained this list very carefully. D'ya think that's because Pedro and someone else have already been placed on the 60 day DL? Later
  9. ="Yancy Street Gang"] As for the question you're posing, the answer may be "both." It's possible that he's inarticulate and brilliant. You're right. Those things are not mutually exclusive. And I therefore announce that I will now refer to Omar as our "Rain Man GM". Or, just "Rain Man". Later
  10. From today's Daily News: ] The Mets face a costly decision with Jorge Sosa, who has an 8.53 ERA after he was charged with six runs in two-thirds of an inning before he was pulled yesterday. One option is to hold onto him at Triple-A New Orleans as insurance. But the Mets would be on the hook to pay him $1.25 million whether he's in the majors or minors. They'd be on the hook for 45 days' pay - $307,377.05 - if he's released. Later
  11. Yancy Street Gang wrote: I don't expect to see him back. If the Nationals are as awful as everyone seems to expect (something like 155 losses, I hear) they'll be able to afford to carry him on their roster for the entire season. They just have to hope he doesn't get too demoralized playing for a team that loses 161 games. So, are you betting the under? Later
  12. And I thought I was the only one following Flores. I've been checking out the transactions every day ... hoping to see a note about him being returned to the Mets. sigh Later
  13. Nymr83 wrote: ]Tony LaRussa was arrested on suspicion of DUIwe have a whole thread about the DUI. . Maybe that's why others have suggested that thread titles be a tad more descriptive of their content. Later
  14. In his blog for the Journal News, John Delcos notes that the Mets have signed 32-year-old third baseman Fernando Tatis to a minor league contract. The Los Angeles Dodgers released Tatis last Wednesday, three days after he failed to report to their minor league camp. Tatis was a non-roster invitee to Dodger camp, and hit just .158 this spring training, going 3-for-19 in 10 games. He played in 28 games for the Baltimore Orioles last season, hitting .250 with two homers and eight RBIs.
  15. Tony LaRussa was arrested on suspicion of DUI. http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/sfl-322larussa,0,6397172.story?coll=sfla-sports-headlines Somebody on another board wrote this, which I nominate for line-of-the-day: ]I heard he wasn't sleeping, he stopped to think about bringing in a left-hander to drive the next block and a right-hander to drive the block after that. 21. The box score shows the winning run was unearned, but doesn't show either an error or a passed ball. Wha' happened? Later
  22. I recall seeing Al Jackson constantly give up ground ball single after ground ball single through the right side of the infield because neither his first nor second basemen had any range. (Or couldn't bend over) Later
  23. About Schmoll: http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_main.aspx?sport=MLB&id=4029 He decided to report to the Mets' minor league camp after being cut from the 40 man roster. Later
  24. I'd be happier if the question was how many walks will Jose get this year, and the numbers started in the 80's. Then, the homers would be ok. Later
  25. From yesterday's transaction wire: Philadelphia Phillies Reassigned ... OF Lou Collier ...(is he the ex-Met?) to Minor League camp; Optioned ... RHP Anderson Garcia ... to Minor League camp. Later
