Some pitch more and some pitch less, but as far as I know only one has ever been restricted from pitching two days in a row. Is that now to be the only acceptable standard? And who was that one? Anyhow, yes, relievers are called upon to pitch two days in a row (and sometimes more). But they had been relievers before, and first their arms were gradually "trained" up to the level of pitching every other day before pitching two days in a row. I think that changing this particular pitcher, given his experience as a starter and youth, over the course of a couple of weeks, is not the right course. As Dennis Miller has said "Its just my opinion and, I may be wrong." Later
  2. Edgy, All they way back, in my first comment I said I agreed with you. I have no problem with using him in the bullpen during ST and then stretching him out later as a starter. My comments were focused on the comment that Jerry said he'd use him two days in a row. If he hasn't been used as a reliever before, and he's going to be a starter in the future, I just feel doing that is unnecessary. Maybe its because I had a sore arm and never recovered from it that I tend to lean to the side of caution. Later
  3. I can't quantify it. But his arm is something special. I wouldn't want to take any unnecessary risks, especially at his age. That's just my opinion. Later
  4. Edgy DC wrote: If pitching him two days in a row is too dangerous, then baseball is too dangerous. Not for a guy who has experience pitching out of the pen say, every other day, for a season or two. But he's 20 years old and has always been a starter (with different warmup routines). Why risk it in his case? EDIT: That's like pulling your boat trailer with your new Porsche when you have a Jeep in your garage too. Later
  5. Looks like I'm the only one who has voted for Adams. Shocker, eh? A few years ago, Adams was the starting shortstop for the Blue Jays. Since then he has been injured. If healthy, and Tejada shows he needs more seasoning, I think Adams should start the season at short. I think he is better than A. Hernandez (not in the poll) and should make the team anyhow. BTW- who is this guy L. Hernandez who has played some games at short for the Mets this spring? And he's done it in games in which A. Hernndez has played, so I'm pretty sure it wasn't a misprint. I hope its not Livan trying for another comeback. Later
  6. I agree with Edgy. I have no problem with Jerry pitching him in relief in ST and then stretching him out to start when he gets sent down. That is a reasonable approach to developing a prospect who will end up a starter. What scares me was a quote I read from Jerry last week in which he said that he will try pitching Mejia two days in a row out of the bullpen. The toughest thing that can be done when "training" a young arm for the bullpen is seeing if the arm has the ability to "snap back" after pitching, so he can pitch the second day. I'd hate to take a chance on injuring an arm like he has, knowing he will eventually be a starter anyhow. Later

  8. Moved to the shortstop poll thread. Later
  9. Fman, I told you how to tell somebody to eat shit in Japanese, and you didn't nominate me? Later
  10. Unless you can get more definite with your answer, I'm going to hold off on any BOC nominations. Later
  11. I voted sex. The last choice reminds me of a Joe Garagoila line* talking about how gnarled catcher's hands get from all the foul tips. He said "When two catchers shake hands, you need a plumber to separate them". Later * = from Baseball is A Funny Game
  12. Edgy, I wasn't trying to be a smartass. I was probably unclear in my comments. Prior to this stuff about the Canadian Doctor, there was never any link I know of Reyes to PEDs. I don't know whether the reason Reyes went to the Doctor was that his American treatment wasn't working and he felt he needed another kind of treatment. And we don't know if the reason those (American) treatments weren't working well was because he already had undiagnosed thyroid problems prior to that treatment. And the Doctor is claiming that he only did blood spinning and did not add any PEDs. I don't know if thyroid problems happen overnight or if they are from birth. So, in absence of any resolution to the chicken/egg question (did taking PEDs cause the thyroid problems) , I voted 0% from my head, not my heart. Later
  13. From ESPN. The Red Sox signed infielder Nomar Garciaparra to a one-day contract, allowing him to formally retire as a member of the organization. Garciappara, 36, formally submitted his retirement papers on Wednesday morning and will join ESPN's "Baseball Tonight" as an analyst for the 2010 season. He will leave behind a .313/.361/.521 career batting line, 229 home runs and 936 RBI over 5,596 major league at-bats. Hey! That career OPS is .882. That's higher than Jeter's .862. We finally know who was better. Later
  14. You can link anything to anything (e.g.- by using it in the same sentence). But that doesn't mean they are truly connected. Without proof, it is all speculation. Later
  15. Yes. From the references that were posted in the other thread on the subject, "can be linked" is a better choice. But in Reyes' specific case, I'd still vote none. Thanks. Later
  16. I voted zero because of the way the choices were worded. I'm not sure if tracing, muchless proving, the link is scientifically possible. Later

  18. Is Montero wearing a yarmulke in that first pic? Dispite his clothing douchebaggery, Wagner will not be a true Brave until he has pictures of pickup trucks hanging up in his locker. Later
