When the Markusen book was originally mentioned here on the CPF, I posted that my name is mentioned on the Acknowledgement page and some of my memories are in the book. I also submitted some stories to Paskin, but don't know if any of them were included. Later

Edgy DC wrote: Well, Batista can fail to make the team by breaking down or failing utterly faster than the guys he's backing up. He is, after all, 73 years old. Edgy, thanks for making me feel young again. That means I still have five years to fulfill my dream of pitching in the majors. Later

Edgy DC wrote: Rizzuto was 16th on the list. He'd probably be 20th or so now (again, not counting Negro Leaguers), with Jeter having passed him, and probably Nomar Garciaparra and Omar Vizquel as well. OE: BB-Ref has them really close in WAR, with Garciaparra at 42.5, Vizquel at 42.3, and Rizzutto at 41.8. Hanley Ramrez and Jos Reyes each have 29.3 career WAR. Rizzuto was the glue of the infield that won many championships. Never flashy, always steady. He played in an era when shortstop was a defensive position, with hitting secondary. Considering the third and second basemen who played with him (BTW, third baseman Andy Carey passed away the other day) were constantly being platooned by Casey, he was the constant. Later

I thought that in their lexicon a "five star" prospect would translate to more than "at least a #3 starter". Later

Thanks. Like Wagner, Vaughn and Cronin on that second list, just a tad before my time. Later

And it's ours to search through all the broken places trying to find it. Very poetic. Very true. There are a bunch of "imperfect" major leaguers. They're called designated hitters. Later

Who is the "Davis" at #14? I went on Baseball Reference , entered "Davis" and couldn't recognize a shortstop with that last name. Who did I miss? Later

Here's someone who actually put together a compendium of ca-ca about George's retirement. Warning! You may want to check your supply of barf bags before opening the link. http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/mlb-big-league-stew/writing-jorge-posada-retirement-150930144.html I warned ya'. Later

I'm just amazed how Griffey and Larkin didn't realize how much going to the Mets would prepare them for dealing with the greatness of their HOF elections. SC=92 Later

I'm going out on a limb here, but I'm guessing that the YLDB shills in the media will be telling us how he deserves to be in the HOF. Constantly. Later

Far better? Highly doubtful. The year he hit 10 HRs? He slugged worse that year than a 14-year-old Ruben Tejada did last year. He's Alex Cora with the baserunning awareness of Angel Pagan. He's Starlin Castro, without the glove, and minus the bat, and plus a few years. He makes Jeter look like Jeter thinks he looks. He is... the Least Interesting Signing In The World. And, when he drinks beer, he drinks DosEquis. Later

This guy is far better than Omar Whatzisname they signed a few days ago. Two years ago, hit ten homers. Was injured part of last year. Let's face it, they have nobody else on the roster who could fill in for a week or so as the backup shortstop and not make you cringe every time a ground ball is hit to the left side. Turner can't play that position for more than an (eventful) inning or so. There may be some guys in the minors who can play there in a year or two (Valdespin for one), but they're not ready. A decent pickup. Later

Here's the part I'm having trouble grasping (about the whole deal, not just this recent development if this really is a development): When exactly did this team start "hemorrhaging money" as I believe Fred once put it? THAT is the question that must be answered. It was Tax Law that made the Wrigley family sell the Cubs after many years of ownership. IIRC*, the law states that a sports team's operational losses cannot be taken as deductions (against other income) if those losses have continued for over seven years. At that point, the team is considered a "hobby" and the deductions are no longer allowed. If the losses have been occurring for a number of years, but helping the Wilpons w.r.t. the other revenue, the benefit will be ending soon and they will have to make the decision to take the real financial hit or sell. The first may cause the second. We can only hope. Later * = My mother always wanted me to be an accountant. I'm not. But I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express.

Edgy DC wrote: Joelmon Sherman reporting that Scott Hairston is coming back, pending a physical. Which to me brings up the question: Shouldn't the Mets have a pretty good file on his physical condition already? Edgy, I'm thinking that's baseball newspeak for "He has to pass a drug test". Later

I'm searching for a link to my parody "Total Eclipe of the Art". Can't find it, so the title will have to suffice. Later

Thanks. I enjoyed that. It truly captured the Peter (he never likes to be called "Pete") I have known. Later

I've been exchanging emails with his brother, Peter (The HOF Basketball writer) for a number of years. We reminisce about the old American Basketball Association and the current state of the game. But Peter likes to stick to basketball, so his brother, and baseball, have never come up in "conversation". Later

Edgy DC wrote: That sounds great. My strategy is to propose a paper that's so esoteric-sounding that they have to accept it. The last time I presented at a conference of this nature, I lectured on "Metacongnition of Range Factors Among Antidiluvian Met Secondbasemen and the Liiberation of Ahistorical Consciousness." I still have some of the handout packages if anybody is interested. Thanks for the package, Edgy. Great work. And that picture of Chuck Hiller on the cover gave it a special touch. Later
