    Ralph Kiner

There will always be a Kiner's Corner in Heaven, and in our memories. RIP Later
  2. Carlos Beltran? Later
  3. Don't know whether it will help or hurt or even change the type of hitter he will be. But I'd imagine it will be general stuff like: wait for a pitch you can hit keep the pre-swing motion to a minimum get your hips out of the way early Sometimes, when you hear it from a great hitter, it sinks in better than hearing it from another coach. or, he'll ask Rod to look at his swing and see what he's doing wrong/ dufferently from the last time Rod saw him. (wasn't Rod one of his organization's coaches when he had good success?) Later
  4. He immediately jumps to the top of MY list for manager-in-waiting in the organization. Later
  5. A Farns is certainly not worth as much as a Hunter Pence. Later
  6. Classy Lassy. To paraphrase a line from the original film version of Arthur: I imagine you'd have to go to a bowling alley to find someone so classy. Later

  9. Edgy MD wrote: Ralph it is. Ralph, by the way, won the support of exactly 1.1% of the BBWAA electorate his first time on the Baseball Hall of Fame ballot. When was the 15% "must get" rule to stay on the ballot enacted? Later
  10. Regarding increases in spending on the horizon, I think we've just been given a definite maybe. Later
  11. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Is this the first time that this lender-imposed payroll ceiling has become public knowledge? Or did I just miss it somehow? (I confess, I haven't been doing anything more than briefly skimming those thousands of Megdal articles that have been posted here.) Whan you go to the banks to (re)finance $250 million in debt, you have to provide them with a VERY specific business plan, down to the penny. I can't believe the line item for payroll expense hasn't been specified on all prior loan applications. How much can the Mets spend? We don't need to find a leak in the Front Office. We need to find a leak at the banks. LAter
  12. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Plus he's a bland, Southern Jesus type of guy and we have enough of those. What would you prefer, someone who looks like the sixth guy from the left in a police lineup? All I want is someone who could bat sixth from the top in the Mets lineup, and play good shortstop. Later
  13. Frayed Knot wrote: They can pad if they want to, they can leave felt hats behind. Cuz line drives don't glance, and if they don't glance, then their lives aren't worth a dime. Thumbs up. Nice. Later
  14. Sounds like the classic sales "Takeaway" move by Sandy. Boras may feel he has a reasonable offer from the Mets, so he's now checking out other teams to see if he can do better. And Sandy is telling Boras his interest is waning, trying to get Boras to take his offer while its still on the table. And Spring Training is about two weeks away. Interesting. Later
  15. Keith Law rates the minor league system #6: 6. New York Mets The turnaround in this system is remarkable, especially when you consider they have not had a top-10 pick since they took Matt Harvey in 2010, and it puts the Mets in excellent shape relative to the other four teams in their division. The decisions to trade R.A. Dickey and Marlon Byrd look even better in hindsight. The Mets also have one of the minors' best collections of pitchers who throw strikes but aren't strictly finesse guys. Later
  16. Frayed Knot wrote: I wouldn't mind seeing him and Lannan sharing some sort of 6th starter/long-reliever kind of role. Good insurance in case the kids aren't ready to step up to the opportunity. And insurance is something you hope you never have to use. Later
  17. Old book, but I just started reading the paperback. Naked Pictures of Famous People by Jon Stewart. The dediction reads: "For my loves -- Tracy, Stan, and Shamsky No offense, Sportscenter" Later

  19. Lefty Specialist wrote: Benjamin Grimm wrote: He was also a signer of the Declaration of Independence, if I remember my American History/baseball trivia correctly. That's his brother Caesar, only a quarter of the pitcher he is. There's an error in that coin. He had scars on the left side of his face, and only permitted portraits of himself showing his right side. The person who engraved the design for the coin, 200 years later, did not know that. Later
  20. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Says his recovery is going fine and he hopes to pitch in September. Great news! Just in time for the post season series*. Later * = that's plural
  21. Edgy MD wrote: Mystery teams seem like bullshit, but Boras has managed to make good on such bluffs before. I hereby place Edgy's name in nomination for this year's "I Can Spot Bullshit When I See It" Award (another one we didn't know existed). Both Olney and Rosenthal are tweeting that the Yanks won't be going after Drew. Good call. Later
  22. As mentioned before, he's a Boras client. Does Scott have a history of letting his players double clutch for a year to allow the road to open up for them later? I can't think of another example. Later
  23. Jon Heyman mentiones Drew. Oh, crap! http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/01/23/report-the-yankees-are-now-considering-going-after-stephen-drew/?ocid=Yahoo&partner=ya5nbcs Later
  24. Stupid, ridiculous hyperbolic headline of the day: New York Mets Failure to Land Grant Balfour Exposes Huge Problem The link send us to something that looks like Yahoo Sports on crack. Indices, no info. Do we have to guess the writer? I'll take "Howard Magdall" for $100, Alex. Later
