Then (my sneaky mind at work, not sure if its legal wrt MLB rules) lock in a healthy Profar. Trade them a minor league infielder (Tovar?) and a PTBNL (Thor, or a veteran or combo of players) for one of their minor league prospects and a PTBNL (who will be Profar once he has proven that he's healthy). If he doesn't get healthy, bail out with lower level players on both sides. Later

  4. Frayed Knot wrote: And, yes, the rules are different for the minor league phase but I'm not up on all the specifics. Here's what I know: (Or think I know - no specific link found) Players can be drafted from an organizations' double-A roster to another clubs' triple-A roster and also from an A-roster to an AA-roster. Players who are drafted in the minor league portion of the draft are not required to remain on the roster of the club which drafts them and are not subject to being returned to their original club. Players drafted to a AAA or AA club should be offered an opportunity to remain at that level during spring training, but it is not required. There is no provision for players being returned to their previous organizations. In return for the player, the original club receives the following cash considerations: Triple-A Draft $12,500 Double-A Draft $ 5,000. Any other rules? Later
  5. Well, at least they made a few moves at the meetings. I was beginning to think I was going to celebrate Pass-over twice this year. Later

  9. Its based on impression. It seems like he can't hold a lead. And when he doesn't have his best stuff, he doesn't seem able to find a way to compensate. The other two can "battle". He can't. He loses it quickly and never gets back on track. I have no figures to back it up, but its a gut feel. I find myself screaming at the set more when he pitches than with any of the other starters. Wheeler will move out of the scream zone when he matures and gets better command. Later
  10. I'd drive Niese to the airport, just to make sure he gets on the plane. Getting him off the Mets would drop my blood pressure by about 20 points. Later
  11. Told ya' so. A while ago (don't remember the thread) I predicted that around this time, some writer would drag out the Bobby Bonilla payoff and tie it to whether the Mets would have money for free agents. Let it be written. Let it be done. http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/7879021/mlb-new-york-mets-pay-bobby-bonilla-millions-years-come-espn-magazine Later

Frayed Knot wrote: On the other hand if you want to do away with the tradition of having incoming relievers throw warm-ups on the mound after they've already warmed-up in the pen then I'm with you. The original purpose of allowing it, because bullpen mounds were often inferior and not the same on the real mound, went away decades ago. Warm-ups at the beginning of innings - sure, but within an inning - nope, get your throwing done in the pen. This would save at least a minute per in-inning change. That'll do it. Later
  13. Lefty Specialist wrote: Here's my proposal: Any relief pitcher entering a game with no outs must face at least three batters. And any relief pitcher entering a game with at least one out must complete the inning. (Number of outs and number of batters can be negotiated with Union) Later What if a pitcher is totally ineffective, and gives up 5 hits in a row? You can't be forced to keep him in. At the start of an inning? My rule accommodates that. And the corollary to my new rule is that it may spur offense, which baseball has been looking to do since steroids have been banned. Maybe the negotiation would include an effectiveness clause, too. Later

  15. How many deals do you think the Mets will announce by the end of the meetings? That includes the Rule V Draft. Later

  20. If a team wants to rest a player, they can do that now by simply not playing him. Seems this would allow them to replace that player on the 25 man for that week, so that the manager wouldn't be tempted to use the player in a key game situation during that time. To me, if a player's injured, he's injured. DL him. If not, formalizing a rest period is just a way to wussify the game. Later
  21. Frayed Knot wrote: The logjam comes if/when they try to shoe-horn Evan Gattis into LF at which point they'll have to deal away an Upton or two. From the NY Post: The Braves have already received attractive trade proposals for outfielder Justin Upton, With several free agents off the board, a deal could come together soon, per Joel Sherman, possibly during the upcoming Winter Meetings. The teams addition of free agent Nick Markakis would appear to increase the odds of the club dealing Upton and/or Evan Gattis, though its final course remains unclear. If there's going to be a bunch of Uptons available out there, I'd still take Kate. Later
  22. Edgy MD wrote: What do you mean by "minus in OPS"? Less than 100. (I think that means less than league average) IMO, Murphy plus Tejada is too much to give up for him. Later

Huh? http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/crawfbr01.shtml Just, .... huh? 4 seasons, over 1800 PA, minus in OPS. For that, he'd have to be the second coming on Ozzie Smith. And he ain't.
