  1. I look at Sandy's moves from a strategic standpoint. To evaluate the deals, we'll have to wait a few years to see if the long term result was worthwhile. If he had re-signed Murphy, it would have been for multiple years (let's say 4). Instead, he got Walker (who isn't exactly chopped liver) for one year, and it will open up the spot to play Dilson Hererra, most likely for the three years after this. But you also have to view the total salary difference over those four years(the difference between four years of Murphy versus one year of Walker and three years of Hererra). Several pitchers will be getting eligible for large contracts over that period, and the money saved can be spent to help keep the pitching. Later

    BFG

It stands for Big Friendly Giant. Its a mixed live actor and animation film based on a story by Roald Dahl and directed by Stephen Spielberg. Its about a young girl taken from an orphanage in England by the BFG, to his land where nine evil giants live. Wifey and I took our five year old grandson (or was it the other way around?) to see it yesterday. When we left the theater, my grandson said "That was pretty good" and we agreed. It was a little too long, and he got a bit antsy in the middle of the film, but then regained interest in the movie to the end. This morning a thought hit me. The BFG looked a bit like Lindsay Nelson and used some words like Ralph Kiner might have. (RIP) Later
  4. A "sweep type"* hitter getting full extension and then hitting the ball a long ways reminds me of Dave Kingman. Later * = keeping the arms straight from the beginning of the arc, almost like a golf swing.

Any time I go looking for highlights I have to click on each play and wade through 6-10 links to see the big moments. Can't they just recap it for me without making me watch that many commercials first? There's a cable show MLB Tonight. They show highlights of all the day's games. If they have a website (never looked for theirs), you might have luck there. Also, maybe on the SNY website. Later
  6. I remember the seats in RFK Stadium that FK noted. I saw a lot of games there when I was stationed at Ft. Belvoir. (17 miles south of DC) (I also remember the bare spot in left field where Frank Howard stood when he played the outfield, but that's a different issue). I'm all in on this idea. Later
  7. He snuck up on us. Did the bring him up during one of the rain delays? Later
  8. Living in New York we were spoiled by having grown up watching three centerfielders who could hit, and hit with power. (Willie, Mickey and the Duke) But it had traditionally been a defensive position, and when I think of those good field/ no hit centerfielders of the 50s, I think of Bill Tuttle, Whitey Herzog and Bobby Gene Smith. RIP Later
  9. He was on Mike and Mike this morning. Very odd. He was on Good Day New York, too. They said his book is #1 on Amazon? I guess people like a train wreck. (Unless they've been in one, like I have) A YLDB at my office got a tweet about one of his upcoming personal appearances and tweeted back "Will it be in a bar or a strip club:? Later
  10. Stock up on barf bags, Martha. You're gonna' need a lot of them this season. Later
  11. Was this to make room for Reyes on the 40 man roster? Sorry to see you go, Danny. You seemed to be a nice guy, as those quotes show. Later
  12. They give me flashbacks to the teams of the late 70's, when I would watch to see if Kingman or someone else would hit a home run. Then I'd do something else for the next two innings, knowing it was impossible for the rest of the lineup to generate any offense. They are dull and unwatchable. They make me glad that most of their games are played while I am at work. If others feel the same way and there is a sudden decline in attendance, Sandy will be shaking things up, trading this year for "the future". Later

And do you have reason to believe he isn't? Yes, Sandy's comment that it is a "small one" as you quoted. I tried to explain that there is no such thing. Any bone spur can lead to more serious damage. If the doctors are saying operate now, Sandy shouldn't belittle their diagnosis. Later
  14. Any bone spur causing discomfort (or worse, pain) is no good. It means that something is rubbing against it. And the something is either a ligament or tendon that is on its way to being torn by the rubbing. The spur does not decrease in size over time, nor doen the thing rubbing against it move and re-seat itself to a safer place. To eliminate the spur, it has to be "filed down" or (more drastic) cut off. Not a major procedure, but necessary to avoid future problems that might require more drastic surgery. The MRI each pitcher took should show the Doctors how soon treatment should be scheduled for each pitcher. And Sandy should listen to the doctors. Later

Nice to see him back earning a living. When I saw the name I thought of this guy: http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/o/olivoch01.shtml IIRC the golfer was Chi Chi Rodriguez. Later
  17. The guy's a pitcher. He could have mentioned (I hate myself for this) Whitey Ford, the "Lake Success success". Later
  18. The official autopsy results are in. They identify the primary cause of that patient's demise as a weakening of the parieto occipital junction. That is the part of the neural system system that controls the hand eye coordination necessary for hitting, fielding and accurately throwing a baseball. If it is not corrected, the problem can cause the death of pennant chances. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26999674 Later

  20. I had a home run baseball he hit to win a game at the Polo Grounds. I don't know where it is. I think one of my kids took it to play catch and lost it. I found out about it later. RIP Later

I think the last time the Twins beat the MFYs, Tony Oliva was in their outfield. Later
  22. My mom (may she rest in Peace) would call someone a "real pup" meaning son-of-a-bitch. Could that be what Terry means, or just an obedient puppy who just follows his master(s) around and obeys every command? Probably the second. Later
