  2. We're Mets fans. We can take it. Its going to be like looking through your high school yearbook and seeing all the girls who turned you down for dates. Later

  4. I know. Intuitively, it is correct. At the extreme, if each team was its own division, it would be obvious that there could be no division with more than one good team (d'oh). The probability that as each division expands to four teams, and there are only 7/8 good teams (your post), on average there would be one good team per division. But there might not be uniform distribution based on geography. There still could be more than good one team in a division at any time, because teams can get better or worse over time. And that was my point. I was being a Math doofus. Later

You were talking about the size of each division, not the entirety of MLB. Whose odds? What odds? This is probably something a fifth grader taking the "new math" set theory can calculate. I realize that major league baseball is a zero sum game - for every winner there is a loser. But the size of a set has nothing to do with the values in a particular set. One set ( a division) in a group of sets ( a league) can all have high values when compared to other sets. One set can have more than one high value. And some of the other sets can have many crap teams. I agree that can happen, because the league as a whole is at .500. But a "the odds of ..... " statement should be backed up with the math. I'm not trying to be difficult here, but it is a CPF tradition to challenge generalizations. And, besides, I'm really fucking pissed at the MFYs winning. If they had lost, I would have let this slide. Later

Wouldn't that depend on how many times they play each other under the new alignment? Or some other variable? Haven't as many as three teams from the same (small) division made the NFL playoffs (or at least have the same w-l record as teams that did)? Just because there are few teams doesn't mean several can't be good at the same time. Who a team is aligned with doesn't mean each team can't be good. I don't think there is a direct correlation. 9. We've seen Morton in the NL. He's the kind of third or fourth starter with no one outstanding pitch that the MFYs eat alive, especially in that band box. This isn't surprising to me. Later
  10. I'm not sure Conforto will be fully healed by the end of the 2018 season. Once the severity of his injury was determined, IIRC the Doctors said recovery could take longer than one year. Of course, once they opened him up, they may have seen it wasn't as bad as they thought. But I'm thinking we'll see him again in 2019. Later
  11. I hesitate saying anything bad about A-Rod in respect to the fact that he's the best shortstop the MFYs ever had. Seriously, he and his new steady - J-Lo - just hosted a telethon that raised money for relief for Puerto Rico. They are deeply involved in those efforts. He deserves credit for that. Now back to this series. Go Cubs! Later
  12. Ben. I have now been fully reassured that my few votes DO count and will do my best in the future. Later
  13. Thanks, Ben. I don't participate because my work schedule doesn't me allow to see many games, and if I voted sporadically I feel it would skew your numbers. But that doesn't mean I don't appreciate the effort you put into this. Later
  14. To the home team, straight from Khan (or Ahab, take your pick): From hell's heart, I stab at thee. For hate's sake, I spit my last breath at thee. Compared to the way I feel about them, they were nice guys. Granderson deserves to be in better company. Later
  15. Crap! Its tied 1-1. Getting nervous. Later
  16. When the Mets and Astros (nee Colt 45's) entered the National League in 1962, Houston beat the Mets all season long (curse you, John Paciorek). And they won a large percent of the games between the two teams for many years. Their winning percentage is still only .455 against Houston, the second lowest against any all-time opponent (.443 Los Angeles). I really, really, didn't like them. The pain finally went away in 1986. But this one's easy for me. Go, Houston! Later

  23. Back when teams looked to be strong up the middle defensively, Landis was one of the best defensive center fielders in the game. I remember him being a graceful fielder with a good arm - think Juan Legares - on the 1959 Go Go Sox. RIP Later
