  2. Jarred Kelenic went public saying he is being unfairly kept in the minors because of a contract dispute with the Mariners. “It was communicated to Jarred that had he signed that contract, he would have debuted last year,'' said Brodie Scoffield, who represents Kelenic. The article also mentions the similar situation Pete Alonso and others have had - whether to delay a call-up to extend the club's control over the player. https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/columnist/bob-nightengale/2021/02/24/jarred-kelenic-mariners-prospect-service-time-manipulation/4568463001/https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/columnist/bob-nightengale/2021/02/24/jarred-kelenic-mariners-prospect-service-time-manipulation/4568463001/ There are a lot of pros/cons for a team doing this in the article, and this case, the team seems to have a good case. “I'm not sure how you construe a service-time manipulation with a 21-year old player who has played (21) games above A-ball,'' Dipoto said on a Zoom call, “and has not yet achieved 800 plate appearances as a professional player. That would be an unprecedented run to the big leagues that hasn't happened in three decades (since Alex Rodriguez in 1994). How do you feel about this? Later
  3. Benjamin Grimm wrote: I suspect, though, that Alonso is extremely unlikely to become the regular 3B, but might be able to play there in a pinch. As they used to say in my old neighborhood, "It can't hoit". I could see it in a shift situation against a dead pull lefty hitter. You move a third baseman who has more range than Alonso to first and move Alonso to third. Later
  4. =batmagadanleadoff post_id=56892 time=1614265812 user_id=68] There was no spinach!
  5. Yes, it was an interesting, and informative, article. It was like meeting and talking with Scarlett Johansson for fifteen minutes. I let the piece of spinach between her teeth bother me rather than enjoying the totality of the experience. Later
  6. Benjamin Grimm wrote: That's... interesting. Has he ever played third base before at any level? I think he has worked out there as a pro and may have played it in high school. Yes, interesting. (insert Arte Johnson gif here) Later
  7. Now we have dueling pearls. When I looked up Pearl of the Antilles I found: Cuba has been called the Pearl of the Antilles since the phrase was coined by Walter Goodman, a British painter whose 1873 book of paintings and illustrations about Cuba bears the title "The Pearl of the Antilles, or an Artist in Cuba". But Haiti was called that much earlier. In the eighteenth century, St. Dominique (Haiti) was the richest colony in the French Empire and was known as the “Pearl of the Antilles”. By the time of the French Revolution Haiti was producing more than half of all the coffee produced in the world. Have we had any Haitian pearls on the Mets? Later
  8. Frayed Knot wrote: If he had just labelled it "Giants" it would have been ok for me. It was labeled New York/San Francisco Giants which, to me, is the same thing as saying Giants except that it has the added benefit of removing any question as to whether they're talking about a franchise-long accomplishment vs a location-specific one. OK, good point. Later
  9. Carl Hubbell's lifetime Giants wins aren't the franchise record because the Giants would move to SF? As I said, of course they are, because they are a franchise record, not a moment in time, where he could have been more specific. I can see how it was the most important moment in that franchise's history, but the way he wrote it just didn't look right. A New York Giant hit the home run, not one from San Francisco. If he had just labelled it "Giants" it would have been ok for me. My life as a business consultant was spent answering questions from executives asking "What's wrong with this picture?" and then telling them how to fix their operational problems. When I see something that doesn't appear correct, I still do that. Sorry if that bothered you. Later

  12. Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: That's your takeaway? Yes it was. Bobby Thompson played for a team named the New York Giants when he hit that home run. Period. San Francisco wasn't even a gleam in Horace Stoneham's eye yet. It somehow lessened the work he did to research and write the article. This isn't the teams listing in baseball-reference.com where they list all the cities where a franchise has played. This was about specific dates and events. His editor should have picked that up. What should have been a "that was interesting" moment was turned into a WTF moment. And, obviously, I felt strongly about it or else I wouldn't have mentioned it. Later
  13. Why did the author think he had to use both cities on the #2 and #1 plays? The team resided in New York when Thompson hit the homer, not San Francisco. Same with #2, they were in LA in 1962, not Brooklyn. It made the article less professional to me, pedantic, not scholarly. Later
  14. Now that the position players have reported, the next milestone will be March 1. No, not because it will be the first spring training game. It will because that is when we will see a box score - to me it will be the sign that baseball has started. What is yours? Later

  19. =G-Fafif post_id=56561 time=1613778856 user_id=55] Brett Gardner continues to be MFY. One-year deal.Figure a dozen hits and three spectacular catchers vs the Mets this season.

  22. Willets Point wrote: I made a list of cities and towns in New England that had minor league baseball teams in fairly recent years and still have ballparks and I want someone entrepreneurial enough to make an independent league out of them. I'd have put Bridgeport on the list too, but the city is converting their ballpark into an amphitheatre. Brockton, MA Burlington, VT Lowell, MA Norwich, CT Old Orchard Beach, ME Pawtucket, RI Pittsfield, MA Will there be a team in New Britain, CT this year? Later
  23. Walker is a good signing. He'd be the 4th best starter on the team if he is healthy. If not, at least they won't be relying on Robert Gsellman, Walter Lockett, Wilmer Font, Corey Oswalt, and Chris Felexen to make starts this year. The depth is adequate for the first time in a few years. This. Better to have too many starters than too few. When Rojas said in a presser yesterday that the Mets might use an "opener" this year, I shuddered. Opener is a euphemism for "we don't have enough starters". Later
  24. My daughter is already checking out the schedule to see when Binghamton visits Hartford this year. It wasn't until very recently that we found that there will be AA baseball in Hartford this year. Go Yard Goats! Later
  25. Lefty Specialist wrote: Luis Guillorme. His hitting will catch up to his fielding. Sorry Lefty. The judges have ruled that Luis Guillorme and his .865 OPS in 2020 disqualifies him from this contest. And if that is his hitting, then he must be Rey Ordonez in the field. Later
