The main distortion about Cubs history comes from the media-fueled connecting of them to the BoSox in terms of heartbreak. Except that unlike the Sawx - who can count a number of division championships plus some close and often spectacular near-misses ('46, '67, '78, '86, 2003) during their lengthy history of non-championships - the Cubs have just plain been real bad for most of the last half-century or so. Sucked does not equal star-crossed underdogs Yup, not to mention the last time the Cubs had anything remotly considered a lenghty period of sustained great play was when they won 5 NL flags from 29 through 45 (well 4 from 29-38 but I'll tack on their last NL pennant year). They don't even have a Mets 1984-1990 period to really brag that much about.
  11. I guess you are disqualified from giving MK points?
  12. Might as well use this for the Shea-Citi discussion thread for 2008, so... When the heck did this happen? I'm meeting a cousin off of Roosevelt Ave and 126th street on Saturday, and I did a Google map search to make sure I tell him the correct street address (BTW hey Google, can we get an updated picture featuring Citi Field? Then again Petco is still under construction in their San Diego overheads) and noticed that parts of 126th and 34th Avenue (or is it still Meridian Road at that point?) are called "Shea Road." Did this just happen recently? Because it would appear that would be quite an appropriate change of address if they so desired to change the Mets mailing address (currently Roosevelt Ave) to Citi Field, Shea Road, Corona (yeah for some reason Corona, not Flushing gets the neighboorhood tag on Google), NY 11368.

My question is, if they're such big losers, and they haven't won a World Series in a hundred years, how the hell do they still have an all-time winning record? They were quite a force in the 1870s through their run in the early 1900s, so they built up a real strong lead on the situation that their dark periods (which haven't been for real lenghty periods as say the Phillies or Athletics) only dragged them down towards the .500 mark rather than the other way around.

  16. St. Louis IIRC it was the setting of the Steve Martin remake of Father of The Bride. Don't know about the Spencer Tracy/Liz Taylor remake.

Can we just call this Aaron Heilman Day and let nobody else ever face Philadelphia besides him and Wagner? Kenny Albert made a reference to Jamie Moyer getting the win in Steve Carlton's final decision as a Philadelphia Phillie, mentioned Lefty would get one more appearance in, be released and signed by the St. Louis Cardinals.

  21. Lets go into the Wayback Machine to 4/17/1964 Game 1 for Shea Stadium which featured a Met lineup of Tim Harnkness 1B George Altman RF Ron Hunt 3B Jesse Gonder C Frank Thomas LF Jim Hickman CF Amado Samuel SS Larry Burright 2B Jack Fisher SP Mets lost to the Pirates 4-3 and future HOFer Willie Stargell hit the first homer at Shea. In honor of this event the Mets welcomed three men in that original Met lineup. Date 4/17 Opponent Nationals Number Removed 74 Remover Jack Fisher, threw the first ever pitch at Shea, Ron Hunt, scored the first Met run and Tim Harkness, who hit the first Met hit at the brand new place.
  22. ="soupcan"]From today's New York Post: Forty-four years ago today, the Mets' Jack Fisher took the mound as the starter for the opener at Shea. To this day, Fisher remembers who his first opposing hitter was (Dick Schofield), who his catcher was (Jesse Gonder) and what he threw for his first pitch (a strike). The Mets lost 4-3 to the Pirates, with 48,736 in the stands, and Fisher, 69, remembers them being pretty loud. "Raucous, roaring," he said yesterday in a phone conversation. "They were great." Fisher, along with Ron Hunt (first Met run at Shea) and Tim Harkness (first Met hit at Shea), will pull down the Shea countdown number today. Somewhere in the NYC area Greg Prince and Jason Fry are celebrating.
  23. ="Triple Dee"]Although my opinion on this counts for very little, I believe it should be disregarded because; - The number is officially retired. - The number is not "assigned" to the players who wear it. - The purpose of wearing the number is to commemorate another player, not as a source of identifying the player who wears it. - If this happens in other seasons, then you have you're just going to have a long list of 25 man rosters from those particular years. - The number will lose its significance for Mets who actually wore it as their assigned number. The MBTN project though is just that the player (or manager and coach) has to get into a regular season game wearing said number. If David Wright today decided to switch to # 4, but ends up taking tonight's game off and then decides he really ought to stay at # 5 and is back in # 5 for Friday night in Philly, then MBTN will not count David Wright as ever wearing # 4, despite whatever photographic or video evidence of Wright in # 4 tonight in the dugout would come up.

    42

Does sound like they are taking from Turner Field's play book with it though. Turner has "monuments" of their retired numbers along the walkway around the stadium. http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1215/565085672_de9fc35619.jpg?v=0 There are also statues for the players as well though (Eddie Mathews, Hank Aaron, Dale Murphy, Warren Spahn and Phil Niekro) along with Ty Cobb (The Georgia Peach, even though he was dead before the Braves brought MLB to Georgia) http://farm1.static.flickr.com/148/334450622_62a89789f5.jpg?v=0 (Note Spahn's, Matthew's and Aaron's numbers behind Cobb. Also 42 is represented as well outside the Braves museum entrance. So may I suggest they also churn out 41, 14, 37 and SHEA as well? Heh, though SHEA would have to be placed, ehh, right around where Home Plate used to be in the Citi Field parking lot.
