  1. Jason Turnbow's They Bled Blue is also another good read/listen on that 1981 Dodger season.
  2. MLBS (I'm pretty sure) Erik Sherman's Daybreak At Chavez Ravine is a great read, or listen as I did, for a great overview of Fernando's life and career. Focusing of course on the Dodgers' efforts to gain the adoration of the Latin American communities that hated them ever since communities were displaced due to the construction of Dodger Stadium. Sherman also advocates for Valenzuela to eventually be inshrined in Cooperstown on the basis of it. As well as getting #34 officially retired in LA. Considering the famed Dodger “rules” and considering how private Valenzeula (he refused to participate in Sherman's project) was, as it wasn't until recently that the public knew he was sick, now I'm curious as to the timing of the 2023 number retirement. In terms of “oh, we better do the Jim Gilliam Exception for him while he's still alive and able to enjoy the moment”
  3. 4 is not Tom Phoebus I think I told that story earlier here, TL;DL Richard Neer of WFAN once was convinced someone talking about the 1960s Oriole who had a hell of a rookie season was being silly with Seaver's name and was really talking about Seaver 3 is El Sid
  4. Todd Zeile for 4
  5. Nieuenweis for #5?
  6. 3 HoJo?

  8. OE, already guessed…RMPL
  9. What is the earliest a long term contract has ever been extended? Kind of curious actually. And I'm not counting restructuring so you get paid years after the contract technically ended.
  10. =Cowtipper post_id=174616 time=1728334409 user_id=166] They should also name an official list of MLB All-Stars from 2020, even if no game was played. They did create an unofficial list, but Baseball Reference and the like don't recognize it.
  11. =Centerfield post_id=173972 time=1728056685 user_id=65] NLDS: Philadelphia. 2007, 2008
  12. =Centerfield post_id=173965 time=1728055400 user_id=65] Of course rooting against the Yankees. It's kinda strange that I'm actively hoping to rematch the Royals in the WS but I'd want no part of a rematch with the Yankees.
  13. =Fman99 post_id=173949 time=1728050205 user_id=86] In the current format there have been three years of best-of-3 wild card rounds, 12 series in total. The Mets were involved in the only two that went three games. All ten of the others were 2-0 sweeps.
  14. Other than DAMN HE'S STILL AROUND Perez behind the plate, I'm pretending this is the 1976-1980 Royals vs the Yankees

  16. 1, Alejandro Pena?
  17. 5 refers to the Juan Samuel, Centerfielder experiment
  18. 4 Tom O'Malley
  19. Ryan Zimmerman Ex-Nats?

Giving a voice to folks who've been treated badly and can't find a platform to respond is one of the democratizing benefits of the Internet. Fair enough, but the fact that it is being written on a Fan Memories commenting forum about a specific noted person on an, no offense, obscure website dedicated to a sports ball team, as opposed to communities on platforms such as Reddit, Facebook, Discord, etc does suggest something else besides “I need to get this story out there.” I'm not sure there's any more mainstream site if you need to speak your truth about Charlie Samuels. Sure there is. FWIW, case in point, So far on a few page surface level Google search on “Charlie Samuels Mets” is nothing but articles on his downfall. Not his Wiki page, archived bio from a decades old archive of Mets.com, UMDB or any other place a thumbnail bio with a section to add a comment to would be. There are plenty of baseball and Met related social platform communities, or in general communities (ie subreddits on Reddit) to vaguely tell a story as a first salvo in getting something out there.

  23. Benjamin Grimm wrote: I suppose so, but if it was a positive memory, it probably (although not definitely) would have included something like "I'm sorry I misunderstood" or "belated thank you". I agree, especially in the vein of what Cooby said in that there would be a little more to the story beyond “you know what you did” Which as I said, implies that they want the player to read it, and engage in some pointless argument that gets lost in the weeds of a social media platform comment section.
  24. =whippoorwill post_id=169887 time=1726229713 user_id=79] And if it was a good memory they'd have no need to be vague. ‘I met Tim Tueffel at a Fridays and I was so drunk he hired me a cab' would be something the world should know
  25. I say keep it. I don't really what the fear is in posting it. Not being a lawyer, I can't say for certain, but it is to vague to be considered libelous if that is your concern. Then that would set a precedence for a slew of unverifiable lurid and explicit stories posted on UMDB, a VERY PUBLIC SITE BTW, Yancy is not referring to a forum post. Plus the player memories section isn't meant for things harsher than “he said fuck off to me as he drove past the line of autograph seekers” Not that those should be welcome, but they, and variations, probably are the tamest of the “I had a bad experience with the noted person being discussed” stories you can tell in public forums. We can't even be sure what the original poster's flashback made them remember. Maybe it was Rodney McCray doing terrible karaoke and the poster blocked out his version of "Always Something There to Remind Me" until two days ago. How do we even know its referring to something bad? Folks automatically jump to it being a date rape or something. Maybe the player did something GOOD and the person didn't even realize he did it until just now, when two-and-two were finally put together? Maybe when the person wasn't looking, he slipped a $100 dollar bill in her wallet without her knowing? Who knows? This whole thing was framed to assume it was something bad right off the bat with the words "My inclination is to reject this," which colors it with negative bias right from the get-go. You could do the "if you post this, this could happen" game with anything, ever. There is always a potential for a precedent being set with any action that's ever taken. Could it be perceived as suspect? Yes. But the words that are there are vague and could refer to a lot of things. The people HERE are the ones reading what they want to into them. Ben said that what he's seen implies date rape drug into a drink. And even if we are going by your logic, it's probably for the best that Ben doesn't start a precedence that it's okay for posters to assume the person they are writing about even knows of the page's existence, never mind being a regular checker of it!
