  4. =MFS62 post_id=184632 time=1738864161 user_id=60] Yogi Berra Later
  5. Is Whitey Herzog, Cards, one of the people that never "played" for the Mets? And if so, why are you calling it a "Met Numerical Retirement "? Richie Ashburn, Phillies. Yup

  7. Fuck me. Just remembered a 22nd name. Part of the tricky part that Alomar (answered by metirish) is included with.

Though Herzog actually was a member of the major league coaching staff at one point during a season, I thought it was only fair to add him and another fellow to the ranks.
  9. So we're talking 21 total correct answers, including four who never technically played for the Mets? And Herzog is a correct answer? And the feller what never "donned a Me5 uniform ", would that be Jackie Robinson? Because if it is, I might shoot you. AFAIK he never was employed by the Met organization in any capacity

Yes. Whitey is an answer to this quiz

  16. With Billy Wagner set to join this club in August, thought I'd set up a quiz for the rest of the club as of the date of this post (Feb 6th 2025) Looking at 21 different retired numbers, though two are a bit of a trick question, and 4 never actually played for the Mets (had two in mind, but then realized to be fair I should add 2 two others who either wore a Met uni or were integral to the organization when they were employed by the Mets) Standard ‘pool trivia game applies with one guess per poster until updated post goes up.
  17. I suspect an Astro. I was hoping that Sabathia would go in with Cleveland's logos, but he actually spent more time in the Bronx and I'm not sure he never wore a Cleveland cap with the C.
  18. If he wasn’t a such a noted figure in baseball/NYC baseball history, I’d wager Bobby Valentine’s father-in-law’s passing would have been noted in the 2016 version of this thread!
  19. KC Chief QB’s maternal Grandfather = Ex-99-00 Met reliever’s father-in-law.
  20. Pat Mahomes’ father-in-law was admitted into hospice care https://www.usmagazine.com/celebrity-news/news/patrick-mahomes-grandfather-is-in-hospice-says-mom-randi-mahomes/
  21. There is a story about that happening to David Wells the morning of his perfect game. But that could have been the massive hangover he was dealing with. Then again the story includes him and Jimmy Fallon just drinking the night away at Saturday Night Live’s season finale afterparty hours earlier. One problem, SNL’s finale that season, the 23rd, aired a week earlier, 5/9/1998, while Wells’ perfecto was on 5/17/1998. I supppse I could give the faulty narrator credit for the perfect game happening on a Sunday though In any event, obviously not in Koufax’s case when it comes to major inebriation the previous day, I think most of those stories come from distracted hurlers forgetting the plan, as well coaches/managers projecting the idea that rotations were meaningless, and they could have had the same guy start games in a row if they wanted to. So I’ve taken that notion about not telling a pitcher they were starting until that day, with a ton of salt grains
  22. Sad year for iconic #24s in baseball history
  23. Seeing chatter on socials, including blue check marks in the know among Oakland and his friend circles (Dave Winfield chief among them) accounts that Rickey has passed at the age of 65.
  24. Edgy MD wrote: I have a lot of affection for Jerry Koosman, but I never once looked at Grant Roberts or Colin McHugh in 36 and felt it was wrong that the number was still in circulation. Nor have I heard anybody anywhere voice such sentiments. What happened is Steve Cohen's research netted him not the opinion of the wisest fans, but the loudest, and those we're the ones projecting silly manufactured grievances over petty jealousies. FWIW though, Koosman's was announced during the last vestiges of the Wilpon era, with the expectation of a ceremony during the 2020 season. At the same time the Seaver statue project was given the public greenlight. Both during the 50 Anniversary extravaganza of the 1969 Champions. Also Mays' was more about making good on a long ago promise from nearly 50 years in the past. So really we are just talking about the number retirements of Hernandez, Gooden, Strawberry (all had previously been enshrined in the Met Hall) and Wright (who is getting enshrined the same day) and finally being able to get around to adding a memorial Murphy mic to go next to Ralph's and SHEA in the retired numbers area.
  25. Frayed Knot wrote: I don't remember the source of the article (which may have said "widely believed" rather than widely accepted) but it was from earlier this year and was in connection with Soto's pending FA-gency saying essentially that what the signing team doesn't want to experience is what happened with the Angels and Pujols where it is now widely believe/accepted within the game that Albert was then several years older than his listed age. There's no hint or allegations I know of that this is the case with Soto (which I already stated) and it would be harder to do in this era (which I also said) but let's also not pretend that it's never happened before: El Duque, Rey Ordonez, Raffy Furcal, Adrian Beltre, others. The Yanx wound up taking legal action of some young foreign players who fudged their ages but only against the ones who turned out to not be as good as the team thought they were going to be because to take no action was to admit that they mis-judged their talent. They let things slide on the good players. I was merely pointing out, in the wake of overnight news, that what one doesn't want to occur following the long-term signing of the uber-FA is either a succession of injuries which rob the player of what he once was [see Griffey, Ken Jr., the Cincinnati years] or a questionable age discrepancy [Pujols, Albert: the Disney era]. Read a couple of books about the 1981 Dodgers/Fernandomania recently, and they brought up insinuations that Valenzuela was a bit older than he was presented as. So this stuff does go further back.
