  1. I know what you mean, Hahn. My father loved to rip on the Mets, especially during the lean years. He used to offer to buy me beers for the game if the player of my choice could "get the ball out of the infield" during any plate appearance. Of course, this didn't always work out so well for me. He's a Tigers fan, and it was pretty bad after the sweep in '97. I had the upper hand after the '04 sweep -- we went to the game when Piazza was honored and Cameron hit the walk-off HR into the bleachers -- but he's now taken to reminding me (daily) how many games the Tigers are ahead of the Mets in the standings. We still manage to get to Shea about once a year though. I think I might have to take him to the House of Evil though, to see the Tigers when they come to town in August...

  4. Was finally at Shea for the first time this year! Milledge seemed to have a tough time judging flyballs -- the sliding catch, the Freel broken bat, etc. Sure didn't look like he was getting a good read on anything. Trachsel's homer was smoked. Seemed like it was still rising when it entered the seats. 3-2, he looked for the fastball and swung as hard as he could. Crowd tried to give the curtain call but Reyes got up there real fast and swung at the first pitch (flying out to center),
  5. Trachsel 4 Delgado 2 Nady 2 Sanchez 1 LoDuca 1
  6. The name that first came to mind was Don Sutton, but he did have one twenty-win season (fewest of any 300 game winner, I believe). Dennis Martinez has 245 wins and never won 20.
  7. Rickey played with Gary and Daryle Ward.
  8. ="DocTee"]A series loss here might be GOOD. Non-divisional opponent (hell, non-league, so the effect is mitigated) and it would prevent the Mets from the big-headedness so prevalent around these parts. 1. Losing is never good. Some wins might be better than others but losing always sucks. 2. Big-headedness? I don't see it, at least not yet. I think everybody's fully aware of what the calendar reads. 3. If there is big-headness to be had, great! I'm all for some confidence and swagger from the players. It's been sorely missed.
  9. The 6 teams missing are correct. Not for the other half... The goal was to identify a player from each, using as many as possible. Not as many as you can think of for each...and use any one player as little as possible.
  10. Easy: The Mets have players on their roster* who had once played for 24 of the other 29 teams. Which 5 aren't represented? * Defined as 25-man and ML 15-day disabled list. Tougher: Identify a player for each of the 24 teams -- using as many different players as possible. (ie. -- don't use a guy who played for 10 teams for each of those 10. Use him for as few as possible).

  12. Franco is leading the majors in pinch hits and PH batting average (players with more than 20 PH ABs).
  13. metirish wrote: Something like 72% of his career home runs are against the mets. All SC aside, I think it's 20%, which is still pretty riddiculous.
  14. Shit. Tarp on the field, rain delay in progress.

  17. ="SteveJRogers"][From there, its the manager's decision who should start if the chosen start is unable to play (also has to give up a roster slot as well, of course said replacement doesn't have to start in the injured players stead, but it does usually work out that way) You're correct right up to the "does usually work out that way." The player selected to replace a starter on the roster does not usually get to be in the starting lineup too. The starting lineup spot typically passes to someone already selected for the team.
  18. Elster88 wrote: Trying to remember how often does a starter get voted in who is unable to play as may be the case with Pujols this year? I'm pretty sure that the manager just names a replacement starter and that they don't go to the next name on the list from fan-voting. But I'm not positive. Am I right? Yes, you are correct. Delgado could be a strong choice, but there's also Ryan Howard, or Garner giving the start to Berkman.

  20. ="Yancy Street Gang"]There's still likely to be a race. The Mets will have a slump. Even a losing streak. And the Phillies and Braves will have some hot streaks too. I think the lead is more likely to tighten than expand. I don't think this is going to be 1986 all over again. '86? Not necessarily. But my prediction at this point is that a. The Mets will hold first place for the remainder of the season b. The race won't be all that close.
