  1. I think that El Duque is going to get the fifth starter spot, for a variety of reasons including experience, that he's "Willie's guy" and that the Mets went 16-8 in his starts in 2007. That being said, I think the Mets should consider keeping Pelfrey on the Major League roster this year. I don't think it's a secret that Hernandez and Martinez will miss some starts along the way. Pelfrey can slot into the long reliever spot in the 'pen. If we do that, your pen looks like this: Wagner/Heilman/Sanchez (if healthy)/Feliciano/Schoeneweis/Sosa/Pelfrey. While maybe not quite the '06 pen, I think it's not too shabby. Matt Wise would take Duaner's spot if he can't go -- the Mets have an out clause in his contract that lets them pay him substantially less than they signed him for if they release him prior to opening day.
  2. I'd venture a guess that the Wilpons could easily add another 20-30 million in payroll without a problem. However, that being said adding Santana this year was not a huge salary jump for the team. They shed a lot of money in the salaries of Green, Valentin, Glavine and LoDuca.
  3. Great story Lunchbucket. Did I ever tell you that we also played Shea in my senior year of HS? I think it was Domencetti's last year before retirement. Same uniforms though.
  4. Ryan Church signs for $2 Million. (Link) This leaves Oliver Perez as the only outstanding arbitration case. His agents are the Scott Boras Corp., but this Adam Rubin notes column (link here) mentions Boras specifically. One wonders if Boras will push it to a hearing, especially considering that Perez is unwilling to accept a contract for past 2008.
  5. They'll retire 31, but not until Piazza retires. And maybe not until he's elected to the HOF. 8 should go back into general circulation. Congrats Kid on the HOF, but 4+ seasons doesn't get your number retired.
  6. Several low and desirable numbers (17; 20; 27; 30) sitting open and available.
  7. The Santana Family:
  8. Are we sure about those Kent numbers? Cot's Contracts says he signed a 3 year deal with the Giants in 1999. Wouldn't that mean that the Mets only "controlled" him through the '98 season?
  9. I project that Santana will get the ball on opening day, 3/31 at Florida. The way the schedule lines up, if Pedro pitches game #3, he will get the ball on 4/8, the home opener.
  10. I'm much more worried about getting enough offense out of Alou/Church/Delgado than I am about what we get out of our 'pen. A lefty bat with power off the bench would be nice, too.
  11. Mets sign Feliciano for 1 year, 1.025 Million. Link
  12. True, but the price the Mets paid wasn't just for the 1 year from the Twins, it was also for the security of not having to bid against 28 other teams on the open market.
  13. Endy Chavez, who the Mets did recently negotiate a contract with, does have the same agent as Santana. --- I figure the extension to be an increased figure for 2008, plus 5 years at $125 million, plus some sort of option year in addition.
  14. AG/DC wrote: Seems like the broad agreement of neutral observers had Gomez as the better prospect for the last two years. What has happened that has changed that, if only in the Mets' eyes? He's several years younger, and Gomez looked lost trying to hit major-league breaking balls?
  15. Gary Carter's your man. I need a reservation at the finest restaurant in New York. Who'd get it for me without even breaking a sweat?
  16. AG/DC wrote: Need a party planned for a five-year-old's birthday that --- if all goes accordingly --- is going to be the talk of the Kindergarter dropoff line for the next six months. Which Met will you call? I'd think that Melvin Mora is probably pretty good at dealing with large groups of kids. You've got a trip to Vegas planned with three of your best buddies. First-class the whole way -- nice rooms at the Bellagio, first-class plane tickets, dinner reservations, etc. One of them backs out. Who you gonna call to take his place so that you still have as good a time?
  17. Nah. Not enough power. Maybe he used HGH that one season when he got hurt early in the year. Ken Griffey Jr.
  18. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: but Ryan Church to my knowledge hasn't even been interviewed about becoming a Met. Probably because he doesn't have a signed contract yet. Need to wait until the arbitration decision (or the inevitable signing-to-avoid-arbitration).
  19. At a certain point, that stuff stops being clever and just becomes annoying.
  20. Twins will hold firm on their demands (ie. when Washington was trying to trade Soriano) and nobody will bite. Santana will finish out the 2008 season with Minnesota with Cy Young-caliber numbers and become a free agent, and then get several bucketloads of money from either the Mets, Yankees or Red Sox for a long term contract.
  21. Edit: redundant.
  22. Didn't Roger Craig once miss a start because he cut his hand on his ladyfriend's bra? Oops, perhaps we can leave that question out.
  23. We went last year. Flew to JFK-Orlando (Jet Blue) simply because 1. More flights and they were cheaper; 2. Rental cars cheaper. Granted, it's a 90min-2hr drive to PSL from the Orlando airport. Staying in Port St. Lucie is convenient but aside from the bowling alley and the Outback Steakhouse there's not a whole lot going on. Ok if you're just there for baseball, maybe not if it's a bigger trip. Cheaper lodging can be found elsewhere -- try Fort Pierce, which was a 15 min. drive but much more inexpensive. Buy tickets now (the Mets tix go on-sale Saturday, I think), whether for Tradition Field or for road games. A lot of games were sold out (including all 3 I went to).
  24. I liked Cameron a lot too. I suspect though that he would've been reticent to take a part-time job and probably would've needed a big increase to not take a starting job. Also, he's out for the whole month of April.
  25. I think we knew he was promoted from "Instructor" (where he was banished to the bullpen -- by rule, I think) to "Coach" but he will be the First Base Coach for your 2008 Mets. --- Personally, I think a change at 3B was needed a whole lot more...
