Benjamin Grimm wrote: He can get a coaching job even though he's being paid by the Mets. (Didn't Art Howe coach somewhere in 2005?) I'm not sure if it reduces the Mets obligation to pay him, as it would with a player. I'm guessing not. I believe that yes, he can get a coaching job elsewhere. That being said, I don't believe Howe worked as a coach until the 2007 season, when he was off the Mets payroll (he was paid in '05 and '06).

I'm surprised by how many people would offer arbitration to Easley. I think if the Mets offered it, he'd take it. And then we'd be stuck with him for next year, as I don't think he'd get a better offer somewhere else. Two years in a row, he's been hurt when we really needed him. I have no doubt we can find a backup middle infielder with a little pop somewhere else who's not 38 years old.

I don't think it was as bad as it was in '07. Aguayo probably got a worse rap than he deserved, mostly after that July game against the Phillies where Chavez was thrown out by a mile twice.

Frayed Knot wrote: I'd like to think that it was a common-sense decision made with weather (NE vs SoCal) and time zones (EDT v PDT) in mind, but more likely it was a pre-arranged deal where the higher paying network (FOX in this case w/the NL series) gets the prime time slot while TBS gets banished to the afternoon. Maybe it's because they aren't going to start a game at 1:30 PDT?

I thought it was a nice tribute to his childhood and memories of Shea but when he came across as uninformed it didn't help the piece.

Vince Coleman Firecracker wrote: I think Beltran's awesome, but I don't think he's untouchable the way Reyes and Wright are. I'd consider accepting a decent package for him. Cano/Kennedy/Veras is not enough, though. Cano/Hughes/Edwar Ramirez would be warmer. The Mets could sign Mike Cameron (if the Brewers turn down his option) or take a chance on Rocco Baldelli until Fartinez is ready. That said, I'm in no rush to trade an excellent center fielder that OPS+es 130. A "decent" package for Beltran would be a horrible trade. If somebody wants to trade two young top-of-the-line starting pitchers in exchange for Beltran...I'd consider it. Shane Victorino and Chase Utley for Beltran? Ok, sure. Any combination of players on the Yankees? Not a chance. I can't believe people would seriously consider this.
-
Not mentioned there is that Beltran is also the best defensive player in the league at his position and impossible to replace at the level he brings.

I wouldn't offer arbitration to Easley unless you want to keep him. Which I don't think we do.

I predict Warthen will be retained.

Without having seen the contract, I'll guess it makes more sense for the Mets to not release him. If Burgos is in jail, he's not fulfilling his end of the deal, which means the Mets won't have to pay him.

ALCS Rooting interest poll: Rays-Red Sox
Gwreck replied to stevejrogers's topic in New York Mets Talk
I've tried to watch but I sit down and find that I can't watch more than about an inning at a time. It's not disinterest (the games certainly are entertaining). It's just that not being there bothers me so much more when the games are on. -

Tampa, of course. By the widest margin possible. The team that won twice in in the last 4 years, or the team that was in last place for 9 of the past 10 years. Gee, that's tough. -

THE SCHAEFER METS PLAYER OF THE YEAR, 2008
Gwreck replied to Benjamin Grimm's topic in New York Mets Talk
Thoughts: 1. Thanks BG! Very nicely done. Hard work is much appreciated. 2. Surprised at the big dropoff between Delgado and Reyes. 3. Heilman makes sense when you consider how many times he pitched multiple innings in relief (my quick count was 16 of his outings went over 1 inning). Of those 16, he was charged with runs in only 3 of those outings. Plus, one of those 3 outings was the 15-inning game against the Cardinals where he pitched 3 scoreless before giving up the HR in the 4th inning, pitching as the last man out of the 'pen -- hence Aaron got beer in that game, too. I figure that those > 1 inning outings certainly added up the points for him. -

Lost in your eagerness to needlessly bash Willie again was that this game was already mentioned several posts ago.

Frayed Knot Oct 02 2008 09:00 AM My thoughts as I remember them at the time: 1. Failed to re-sign Bradford -- I didn't mind this move based on not liking 3-year deals for relievers and his similarity with the younger/cheaper upcoming Smith. Only problem was then turning around and giving similar money to Schoeneweis 2. Failed to re-sign Oliver -- I thought nothing of this at the time. He was ready to retire and I'm shocked he's still pitching. 3. Allowed Floyd to leave -- Right move then and now 1. Traded Bell/Ring for Johnson/Adkins -- It's easy to lament Bell now, but unfortunately he was lousy during his last season here. Maybe this was a Peterson issue. The problem was what was brought back. 2. Traded Lindstrom/Owens for J. Vargas/Bostick -- Lindstrom had stuff but was wild and not all that young. Owens was more a novelty (catcher turned pitcher). Again, the problem was that the imports weren't good enough to be 4th OF/5th starter types as hoped. 3. Traded Bannister for Burgos -- I liked this at the time. Fans keep saying they want power arms for the pen and Burgos was exactly that plus younger w/more upside. Just didn't know he was going to turn into injury-prone criminal. 1. Re-signed Mota -- showed promise in a brief trial. But too brief + steroids shouldn't equal a 2-year deal 2. Signed Schoeneweis -- See Bradford 3. Signed Sele -- Essentially a meaningless back of the pen move 4. Signed Newhan -- Essentially a meaningless end of the bench move 5. Signed Easley -- Decnet to good bench player 6. Signed Alou -- Good singing Centerfield Oct 02 2008 09:04 AM It's not like Omar has done a bang-up job since that 06-07 winter either. The Santana trade was great. Other than that, his track record hasn't been spectacular. Maybe extensions are easier to come by these days: *Exercise the option on Moises Alou *Acquired OF Ryan Church and C Brian Schneider from the Washington Nationals in exchange for OF Lastings Milledge. *Acquired RHP Brian Stokes from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for cash considerations. *Acquired C Johnny Estrada from the Brewers in exchange for RHP Guillermo Mota. *Re-signed 2B Luis Castillo to a four-year contract. *Re-signed C Ramon Castro to a two-year contract. *Release OF David Newhan and LHP Dave Williams. *Signed RHP Matt Wise to a one-year contract. *Non-tender C Johnny Estrada, RHP Juan Padilla and OF Ben Johnson, making them free agents. *Selected RHP Steven Register from the Rockies in the Rule 5 Draft then gave him back. *Acquired OF Angel Pagan from the Cubs for nonroster OF Corey Coles and nonroster RHP Ryan Meyers. *Signed OF Brady Clark *Signed OF Ben Johnson *Signed free agent 1B Olmedo Saenz *Signed RHP Tony Armas Jr. *Signed RHP Nelson Figueroa *Acquired LHP Johan Santana from the Twins for OF Carlos Gomez, RHP Deolis Guerra, RHP Philip Humber and RHP Kevin Mulvey *Acquired RHP Luis Ayala from the Nationals for Anderson Hernandez. In hindsight, I'd say the Church trade was good, the Santana trade was great, and everything else ranges from "eh" to "makes me want to vomit". Well, I didn't really have very many big games in September (1-2 with a Homer and a Walk in Atlanta on the 19th was as big as it got for me), so I'm going to have to go with my May 24 performance against the Rockies at Coors Field. I had three doubles and two RBIs. It was also my major league debut. Pedro Feliciano, we know about some of your bad days. What was your best?
