  1. Yeah, for that reason alone, that analogy doesn't work.
  2. It's harder to be rational and it hurts quite a bit more when you're there in person.
  3. I belive the Mets win expectancy was 99.99999999999999999% when Rodriguez got Rodriguez to pop up, and they still lost. Sorry, Luis. Castillo -2,000
  4. I'll leave it to the Elias people to figure out what the closest to victory but then losing situation ever was but I can't imagine that this wasn't in the top 5 in Mets history. I also don't think I'm exaggerating when I say this was the worst non-playoff/playoff-determinative loss I've ever had the unfortunate nature of attending. New MFY park is actually pretty nice if not for all the pop-fly homers. It's like they kept it mostly the same but fixed a lot of what sucked about the old place, while also adding a million suites or luxury seats. Not in my top 5 parks but not bad either.

  6. I disliked all three of the bunts. What I really disliked was Jerry's incongruent strategy. He's playing for one run when his leadoff hitter is on in innings 1, 3 and 5, but then when the Phillies are threatening to tie, he plays the infield back and just lets them tie the game instead of trying to protect that precious one run. Not many fans of the opposing team tonight, fortunately. Nachos Grande were unexpectedly good at the park and a nice alternative, especially if getting to the CF food court is a pain (like it is from my seats).
  7. Can't forget Dan Iassagona.
  8. I hate Jason Werth.
  9. Alright, rally time.
  10. I found it interesting that Jimmy and his .268 OBP got bumped to 6th in the lineup. I might've moved him to 8th, personally.
  11. I think he'll have a tough time succeeding but I think there's some merit to the claim. I think it probably would have sufficed to have his lawyers serve an immediate cease-and-desist letter upon Twitter to have the fake page removed. (Granted, if that didn't work I think his case would be very strong).
  12. This game is being made up on July 2nd. Off day for the Mets; they'll be on the road between Milwaukee and Philadelphia.
  13. ="bmfc1":cgtu7p68]That means that Johan faces the Phillies on Tuesday (and it also means that he goes a week between starts). I have tickets for Sunday so I'm pissed.?[/quote:cgtu7p68] Sorry that you miss Johan. (I'll miss him too as a result of this -- would have seen him either against Philly or the MFYs). For the Mets, however, this is good. He'll get extra rest, and he'll pitch against both the Phillies and the MFYs, two teams we could really use him against. Frayed Knot Jun 03 2009 05:25 PM Bringing back Glavine was sort of a fail-safe for the Braves this year. But seeing as how their question-mark guys are working out decently (Jurrgens - Kamakami), and their main minor league guy (Tommy Hansen) is thriving and probably due for a call-up soon, there was no pressing need to try to work Glavine in. What that team really needs is hitting outfielders. Suxx for him that he's not going to go out on his own terms but thems the breaks. And, no, I don't expect Omar to give him a call. I'd sooner bring back Pedro at this point. I didn't mean THAT quickly!! It kind of helps us out for tomorrow but that's a major pickup for los Bravos. I can't believe Pitt dealt him. He just turned 27 and, unlike last year with Nady & Bay, is still a couple years away from FA-gency. I hope they got themselves a good return. If nothing else it'll piss off Francesa who declared McLouth to be "the perfect Yanqui" on numerous occasions last year. IOW, he's a young, under control All-Star who plays the one place the MFYs don't have a star so I suppose he figured it was inevitable that he be picking up his mail in the Bronx before long. Frayed Knot Jun 03 2009 08:20 PM ESPN: Atlanta gave up outfielder Gorkys Hernandez, one of their top prospects, along with pitchers Charlie Morton and Jeff Locke. Maybe those guys are good, but they have better prospects in both the OF & pitching. [to replace Glavine], the Braves called up highly touted prospect Tommy Hanson, who has dominated at Triple-A Gwinnett and will make his first major league appearance Saturday against the Milwaukee Brewers. The minor league blogosphere has been saying that Hanson has been overdue for weeks now. Another plus: McLouth is under contract through at least 2011, having signed a three-year, $15.75 contract in spring training. The deal includes a team option for a fourth year at $10.65 million, with a $1.25 million buyout. So if Pittsburgh can't afford him who can they afford? By trading McLouth, Pittsburgh cleared a spot for one of its best prospects, 2005 first-round pick Andrew McCutchen. The 22-year-old outfielder was called up from Triple-A Indianapolis, where he was hitting .303 with four homers, 20 RBIs and 10 stolen bases. So why not him AND McLouth? "When we signed Nate to a long-term contract, we did so with the intent on having him remain part of our core of homegrown talent. said GM Huntington -- But the quality and quantity of talent we are receiving in this trade moves us closer to our goal of building that sustainable championship-caliber club." I hope they're right. If so it'll be the first time in a long while. metsguyinmichigan Jun 03 2009 08:35 PM If we signed Glavine, I'd be devastated, not disappointed. As for McLouth, I don't think it was a lack of money so much as the right trade at the right time. Somewhere on your block is a dork getting his ass kicked in fantasy baseball but certain that his day will come because he has Gorkys Hernandez down on his virtual farm. Morton can step into a rotation now (the Braves had him filling a spot) and has done well at AAA. I can't telll you anything to get excited about Locke, but he was a second rounder. Obviously I want this trade to break for the Buccos, but I think it has a good chance of doing that. HahnSolo Jun 04 2009 07:30 AM Has anyone seen, or commented on this, from Adam Rubin: ]After struggles in 8th inning continue, Mets drop J.J. Putz 7th inning BY Adam Rubin DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Thursday, June 4th 2009, 4:00 AM PITTSBURGH - Jerry Manuel met with J.J. Putz Wednesday and informed the ex-Mariners closer that he was being moved from an eighth-inning to seventh-inning role until he can rediscover his form. Putz was the primary culprit in a five-run eighth inning Monday night that resulted in the Mets' second loss in 22 games in which they led with sixouts to go. He will be replaced by rookie Bobby Parnell as the primary set-up man. Manuel described the move as temporary. "I watched some film today, and we think we've found a pretty big, glaring mechanical flaw that's kind of slowly progressed, maybe even through last year," Putz said. "I think we're going in the right direction." As for a lesser role, Putz added: "When you get into those pressure-packed situations, you really don't have a chance to work on anything. All you're really trying to do is figure a way to get somebody out. Maybe, by taking a step back, you're allowed to kind of pitch with a clear head and really think about what you're doing as opposed to just trying to think about getting a guy out." I like it in concept. I just dislike how they continue to try to define undefinable roles like "7th inning guy" or "8th inning guy". Benjamin Grimm Jun 04 2009 07:39 AM I agree. I approve of the demotion but not of the distinction. Hopefully more Mets starters will be completing the 7th inning. But legitimately good especially when you factor in 27 y/o and under team control for a while. Yeah, he's not really a superstar and ideally shouldn't be playing CF (despite his gold glove last year) - but compared to what Atlanta's been trotting out in CF this season: .198/.298/.271 with 2 HRs & 8 RBIs!! it's a huge upgrade (ditto when compared to Melky/Gardener). I mean, jeez, Atlanta pitchers have knocked in 6 in barely half the ABs. Braves, meanwhile, have re-demoted Jordan Schaefer and his 2 Ks/game bat. ]As for McLouth, I don't think it was a lack of money so much as the right trade at the right time ... I want this trade to break for the Buccos, but I think it has a good chance of doing that. I dunno. I'd opt for fair chance at best. Morton's already 25 and crashed in his not-so-brief trial last season. Doesn't mean he's destined to failure but I don't think he's a real high-upside guy. Hernandez is supposedly your classic speedy/slappy CF-type w/lots of speed and a real good glove but almost no power. Sounds like a guy who'll live or die on his OBP. He also sounds like a lesser version of their own prospect Andrew McCutcheon who the trade supposedly cleared room for. That's essentially what they've been doing for the last year or so; going for decent up-side, though hardly guaranteed prospects - Jose Tabata as the main bait for Nady - Andy LaRoche for Bay - and now Gorkys Hernandez for McLouth plus some spare pitching parts thrown in on the side. If they all live up to their potential things could work out real nice for them. If not ... One thing they will have if/when Gorkys comes up is a nice relay team in their outfield: McCutchon, Morgan & Hernandez They might have a HR total for the season that's in single digits but they'll probably save a bunch of runs.

PiggiesTomatoes May 31 2009 09:08 PM It's not just the Mets that have a weak foundation, look through the minors. Aside from a Fartinez and a couple of arms, there's no pipeline for talent either, unless you think you can poach it from other organizations. Hell, what a colossal scramble to find an adequate replacement at SS while Jose heals. I don't think there's a set of metrics you could define in which Omar rates well. I sure have no love lost for Willie R., but the way his departure was handled was also an incredible cluster f. These are all reflections on Omar and Prince Jeff. On the Mets system --- where do they rank? What does "There's no pipeline for talent" mean? Aren't they all pipelines for talent? A "couple of arms"? Arms are valuable things. And many observers didn't have Martinez as the top hitting prospect in the Mets system, so I don't think that "aside from a Fartinez and a couple of arms" comment is true. No more true than of many other systems. As for decrying the scarcity of talent in the Mets system, that's a strange thing to call a GM out for in thread about a trade that adds minor league talent. "Collosal scramble to find talent at shortstop." How many teams kick back happily when their top two shortstops go down with injuries? What's the collosal scramble? They promoted one guy and acquired another. What "metrics" are you using to define Omar Minaya's rating? Are you really aware of several different metrics to rate general managers? There was nothing wrong with the way Willie Randolph was fired. A game ended and he was fired after it. I don't know why this keeps coming up. It's such a non-issue apart from your agenda. John Cougar Lunchbucket Jun 01 2009 06:01 AM They went 19-9 in May (there's a metric) while missing almost half the roster wtih injuries and getting valuable contributions from guys Omar picked up on the cheap such as Cora, Reed, Hernandez, Sheffield, Parnell, Santos, etc. I'm no Omariphile, but the only duds the guy's set off since last year are Ollie (who's been hurt) and I suppose, Green. The catcher played so well that he forced the New York Mets to change their plans. Santos hit a game-ending single in the 11th inning and also homered in the fifth, leading New York to a 2-1 victory over the Florida Marlins on Friday night. Santos was rewarded after the game when the Mets traded backup catcher Ramon Castro and about $1.4 million to the Chicago White Sox for right-hander Lance Broadway, ensuring the rookie will stay with the club when Schneider is activated Saturday. Mets trade Castro to White Sox "On a night like tonight, when Omir Santos plays the way he has, it makes the decision easy for us," said general manager Omar Minaya, who acknowledged being surprised by Santos' speedy progress. Gary Sheffield led off the 11th with a single to left off Brian Sanches (1-1), who threw over to first several times to check on the aging slugger with David Wright up. After Wright struck out -- smashing his bat when he reached the dugout -- Sheffield stole second and went to third when Ronny Paulino's errant throw went into center field.
