  3. My plan would also incorporate: 7. Get a manager who has a clue about strategy.
  4. Lee is probably a discussion for the offseason and obviously should be the Mets #1 target during said offseason. I would be surprised to see Seattle move him at this point; they'd probably need to be way out of the race before giving up on the player they moved a bunch of prospects to get.
  5. Edgy DC wrote: Could have played in Coca Cola Field, Stade Olympique, or maybe BC Place Stadium in Vancouver. With the Jays now the home team for Canadian MLB fans, it could have been a good opportunity to have a home game on the road. Personally, I think they should play in Miami. Vancouver is probably out due to time-zone restrictions on travel. Cleveland was a logical choice, as immediately following this series, the Indians play the Blue Jays...in Cleveland. It's at least driving distance from Toronto. As is Detroit. Or even Pittsburgh. If the Mets (and Marlins, Braves and Nationals) are even paying attention, they should be filing formal protests on this issue.
  6. What utter and complete horsesh*t: From ESPN NEW YORK -- Global politics has upstaged baseball in Toronto. Baseball commissioner Bud Selig announced Tuesday that the Phillies-Blue Jays series will be played in Philadelphia because of the G20 Summit. The three-game series June 25-27 will be relocated from Toronto's Rogers Centre to Philadelphia's Citizens Bank Park because of security issues for the G20 Summit. World leaders will gather at a convention center near the Toronto ballpark. "After reviewing all of the options with the parties and taking all of the security considerations into account, it was determined that the best course of action is to play the series in Philadelphia," Selig said in a statement. The game would have been ace Roy Halladay's first return visit after he was traded to the Phillies in the offseason. It's the lone interleague matchup between the clubs this season. The rescheduled games will be considered home games for the Blue Jays, who will bat last, and the DH will be used. Blue Jays president Paul Beeston said in a statement it was an "extremely difficult decision" to move the three games. "By moving our games to Philadelphia, we are acting in the best interests of our fans, our employees, the players and the game of baseball," he said. "We did not want to move the games but in looking at the realities of this situation, we felt that relocation was the most prudent course of action." Not mentioned in this article: they could have played the games in Cleveland or Detroit (the 2 parks closest to Toronto, for the record) and not in Philadelphia!
  7. For what it's worth. Adam Rubin reveals that it would have been Jon Niese in left field had we tied the game. (And, I guess, Jason Bay at third?)
  8. Forgot to bold him...
  9. Frayed Knot wrote: Would have been nice for the local kid to have hung on and had one last decent season even as the last guy on the roster, but this is a move that needed to be made. No, it wouldn't. He'd have earned a lot more sympathy if he had either a. actually been a local METS fan or b. had kept his big yap shut about his Yankee-fandom.
  10. I doubt Major League Baseball itself would get involved but I have no problem with the individual players or their union generally being involved, as is their right to do. What I find frustrating is the general ineffectiveness of the way their opposition has organized (as mentioned above).
  11. There was very little redeeming about this game. Maine actually turned in a serviceable outing and given the alternative, I think I'd rather see the occasional solo home run (even if back-to-back) because he's throwing strikes than lots of walks.

  13. "Jay Horowitz, the Mets spokesman, told David Waldstein of The Times that the team did not know it had such a fan in such a high place. Mr. Horowitz said that the Mets were 'very proud' and would arrange for her to throw out a first pitch at some point." Taken from NY Times City Room Blog.

  18. Unfortunately the "folks" waking up don't have the initials J.M. or O.M.
  19. Earl Warren. Apparently an interview (from the stands) can be seen during the 1969 World Series, Game 4 broadcast. Ginsburg is from New York but I can't find anything about her baseball preference. Other documented loyalties: Scalia and Sotomayor: Yankees; Breyer and Souter: Red Sox; Roberts and Stevens: Cubs; Alito: Phillies.
  20. Balances out the Sotomayor pick nicely.
  21. Don't look now, but the Nationals caught up to us in a tie for second in the East. Time to knock them and their -17 run differential back down a few pegs.

He got it. The Rays have a pretty good lineup, too. Fun fact: Buehrle threw his perfect game last year against Tampa as well.
  23. For the record, I had Francoeur as our third baseman and Pelfrey our left/right fielder (switching with Bay as necessary) if we tied it. Release Catalanotto and Matthews NOW!!!, call up hitters and a new starter from AAA as well NOW!!!
