  1. Gameday wrote: Daniel Murphy remains in the game as the left fielder. Curious
  2. Enough. Some bullpen, Mr. Collins, if you will?
  3. I remember this game from last year. This is where we walk Halladay and Victorino hits a grand slam.
  4. It's Wilson fucking Valdez! He has a lifetime OPS+ of 65. Sixty-fucking-five!
  5. Two on and nobody out, with Ruiz, Valdez and Halladay coming up. Let's go Jon. Keep us in the game please.
  6. C'mon Josh. Let's clear the pitcher's spot with an RBI single here.
  7. Two members of the ownership group died in the offseason. Both had "B" as an initial.
  8. Oh well. Time for a bases-clearing double from Ike, please. Edit: Shit.
  9. Bases loaded for D. Wright. Let's go.
  10. Reyes singles and now we're rolling.
  11. Francisco - K Ibanez - K Ruiz - K Nice.
  12. Jimmy down swinging and so far Niese is just as good as Halladay.
  13. Leadoff single for Jose (again). Maybe we get him home this time.

Pelfrey said that David Wright told him to let the ball drop. I'm sure that Wright didn't tell him to throw the ball into RF. There was no need for Pelfrey to mention teammates when the failings were his. Pelfrey needs to grow up. Well said. I also doubt Wright told Pelfrey to throw to the wrong base (let alone throwing it into RF).
  17. batmagadanleadoff wrote: Your contract interpretation would mean that the Mets cannot improve the high end of their bullpen because they are legally obligated to facilitate the vesting of K-Rod's option. And that makes no sense to me. Incorrect. 1. I'm wasn't addressing hypothetical situations. 2. You are misstating what I wrote. There are obviously about a million different things that could happen, including injury, decline in skills, the Mets acquiring a better player or even green space aliens abducting Francisco, all of which may affect the Mets' obligations.

  19. batmagadanleadoff wrote: I would like to think that relief pitcher usage would be based on the game situation and on the abilities of the available pitchers. And if those variables or factors are alike, then K-Rod shouldn't have any extra entitlement to finish a game over any other pitcher just because his option is based on games he finishes. I might like to think that too, but there's clearly more to the issue than baseball strategy. The presence of the clause in the contract clearly implies that Rodriguez will have an opportunity to finish games. No other pitcher has that clearly implied opportunity in their contract. Hence, Rodriguez does have a certain extra entitlement to finish games over other Mets pitchers. The extent of that entitlement is the risk/reward calculus I referenced.
  20. The presence of the incentive clause at a minimum suggests that he will be given that opportunity. My analysis of the risk/reward calculus here is that it was fine to use him as the last pitcher in this game and that the Mets, if they really are tracking this thing with the same diligence that we are, may well have reached the same conclusion.
  21. Same thought crossed my mind as well but that would be a little obvious, no? Was there strategic merit to bringing in Rodriguez there? Or would it simply be indicative of a calculated attempt to deny Rodriguez the chance to meet an incentive clause?
  22. In! Many thanks Lunchbucket and New York's Hometown Paper ™.
