I don't see what the first has to do with baseball, and I somehow doubt the second is true. The second is true because the first is true. There's a greater issue than baseball there; it goes to the nature of the employer-employee relationship. Rodriguez has proven himself to be a disruptive and insubordinate employee who committed a felony in the workplace. In the real world, if you do that at your job, you no longer get to work there anymore. --- Going back to your original question as to why the Mets don't work out a contract extension with Rodriguez, the answer is all of the above, plus the fact that any extension worked out with him would still probably be overpaying for the quality he brings to the team. Your comment that "the Mets are still better with a good closer than trying to replace him" is flawed because it fails to consider the potential lower cost of a replacement player of similar value.
  2. Because he committed felonious assault in the workplace and he's a generally undesirable person to have around.
  3. In this context duan was probably thinking of Rafael Soriano, however.

  9. Gee gone and Capuano in to get the lefty. Not sure how much I like this decision.

  11. Ceetar wrote: Even if the prices were "Shea level". Left out is that if prices were at that level, the unready rookies playing hard would be more common, because that's tens of millions of dollars less of income that the Mets would not have. Incorrect. 1. The Mets had plenty of income when they were at Shea; and 2. The new ballpark brings in tons of cash that is unrelated to regular seat prices.

  13. There was a half-inning long in-game interview on the Fox broadcast during game 1.
  14. I'm pretty sure Dickey could have intelligently declined the in-game interview. "I'm sorry, but given the morbid state of our offense and the deplorable results gleaned from our pitching staff this week, I believe it is in our team's best interest to refrain from tiresome and middling interviews while the game progresses. I trust you will understand that anything less would be an unfortunately unacceptable distraction from our united efforts to reverse our team's fortunes."

  19. Ceetar wrote: Popper's is the key there. "no word", "no comment". I understand it's their job to try to tell us what's going to happen, but this is how unfounded rumors start and get spread. Someone follows that up with "guess Young's going on the DL" and ESPN orLoudmouths or radio host say Young won't start on Sunday. There's nothing wrong with what Popper said. Anyone with basic reading comprehension skills can figure out what was said by the Mets and what Popper is interpreting. Your scenarios of the hypothetical person then choosing to make further comment reflects poorly on that hypothetical person and not on what was actually written. Your beef is not with the beat writer here.

  21. I'm just tired of beat writers throwing out speculation as fact, despite how logical it sounds. Let's review. Lennon: "Chris Young sounds very doubtful for Sunday." (emphasis added) Martino: "Also, it feels like Chris Young won't start Sunday. Misch an option. None of this is settled or official, tho. (emphasis added) Popper: "Mets say no word on Young status for Sunday and won't be commenting - which, as usual, sounds bad." (emphasis added) Rubin: "Mets "exploring different options" for weekend pitching. Sounds like Chris Young out, but no confirmation yet." (again, emphasis added)
  22. Wow. Sets the bar pretty high for the KTEs to come. Nicely done.

  24. I really don't care if the next time he's up the bases are loaded, the next pitch to Tulowitzki needs to be in his ribs.
  25. Hey, look! More runs. Jose with a two-run single in the bottom of the fourth. 4-2 Mets.
