I'm pretty happy (though a deceptively venal friend suggested it would have been even better if the Braves had won on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch to a vulnerable area of Mark Teixeira's anatomy).

Jerry Martin could have taken a few dozen at-bats and it wouldn't have mattered a whole bunch. In 1984, Jerry Martin was, to my 1984 self, the fly in some otherwise delightful ointment, particularly as a 4-1/2 game lead in late July melted away, making the ointment a little yucky in real time. Sadly, I have not reached the point of contentment where I remember that men in Mets uniforms do in fact not always succeed when I want them to and accept it as a fact of this imperfect life. Guillermo Mota's A-OK, too.
  13. Edgy DC wrote: ="G-Fafif"]="HahnSolo"]Jerry Martin, 1984. Great call, though in my case it was more muffled anguish than a straight-out scream. Ditto for Ray Knight in 1985. Got over that quickly in '86. Jeez, 1984 was a fairy tale. You used your breath screaming at the guy who was the fifth outfielder for the first half of the season? Suck in a bad year and you suck with many. Suck in a close year and your suck really stands out. ETA: It's easy enough to recall "Jerry Martin never got a big hit, in fact he always made an out in a clutch situation and cost the Mets just enough to make a substantial difference in their race with the Cubs." Of course statistics exist to either subvert or support our memories. According to Baseball-Reference.com, Jerry Martin in 1984: --went 3 for 24 with two walks, 13 strikeouts and two double plays grounded into as a pinch-hitter --went 2 for 23 with two walks, seven strikeouts and 3 double plays grounded into with runners in scoring position --went 1 for 19 in "late & close" situations, walking twice, striking out eight times and grounding into 3 double plays in the 7th inning later with the Mets tied, up by one or the tying run at least on deck I reiterate my applause of HahnSolo's call and retroactively unmuffle by Jerry Martin-related scream.

  16. Elster88 wrote: ="G-Fafif"]="Edgy DC"]The Mets do their jobs at all here, and the Braves are irrelevant. Courageous outlook (I was going to say "brave" but reconsidered). Not courageous, realistic. I missed our clinching.
  17. Edgy DC wrote: The Mets do their jobs at all here, and the Braves are irrelevant. Courageous outlook (I was going to say "brave" but reconsidered). Yet anybody within striking distance and with enough head-to-head games left is not to be utterly dismissed even if they are to be utterly disdained. I look at it this way: If we were the ones six back with six left to play againt the first-place team, I'd be taking us very seriously. I do prefer being the first-place team, however.

I shuddered, flipped away for probably 30 seconds and it was tied. With Byung-Hyung Kim warming up for the Fish in case Armando can't give up more runs. Is Fredi Gonzalez still on the Atlanta payroll?

Will post details when they are available. I just immortialized Tom Glavine at the expense of Jackie Robinson. I don't deserve a t-shirt. I don't deserve clothes of any sort, do I? I'm also pretty sure your affection for Gil Hodges just elbowed Tom Terrific off the cloth.
  20. Jason's made a cameo or two, but I don't think he ever burst past Monstrously Huge Batboy territory.

He is a regular commentator in the "He Was a Met" (a look back at Met player notables) and "The Team The Time" (a look back at notable seasons). I have this vague recollection that he used to (still does?) write for the show as well. Picking up on what soupcan said, don't you two lads work together on FaFiF,wouldn't you know if Greg is on SNY ...you taking the piss or what?....and how come you are not on SNY talking up Felix Millan and the like... Metirish, I believe you're confusing Gwreck with my lovely and extraordinarily talented blog partner Jason (who has been on the show as well). Common mistake. All we G's look alike.

You play average defense on your good days! You throw offline if you throw it hard and when you throw it straight it bounces six times! You look like a lost puppy dog running the bases! You have more strikeouts than hits and I can't remember a time when you didn't! You seem more concerned with looking good than playing good! Yet, people complain that you don't play enough and I would rather trade you for ANYTHING...are you ever going to live up to your billing?? I like that TransMonk not only gave us an answer, but gave us his scream.
