  1. The Houston Astros were also born in 1962, but accept no substitutes. Or starters: Bourgeois LF Bourn CF Pence RF Lee 1B Jhnson 3B Sanchez 2B Manzella SS Quintero C Myers P

  4. Spitter and the Monks made for a delightful pregame conclave with Mrs. Fafif and me. We're huge South Sydney Rabbitohs fans suddenly, and aren't too crazy about Brett Favre (not that we were). Geography really contracts when you've got a board like this.

I saved those for a while, too. Sorry I didn't save them a while longer. Didn't Tug have one with a fireman's helmet?
  6. Evening kicked ass roughly in proportion to Marlins doing same to Mets.
  7. Wright 2.0 Francoeur 1.5 Pagan 1.0 Acosta 1.0
  8. They got rid of Cantu. They got rid of Ross. Coghlan cleverly got rid of himself by tearing up his knee while delivering a walkoff pie to the face of Wes Helms. To paraphrase Jon Lovitz as Michael Dukakis on "SNL" in 1988 re: Dana Carvey as George Bush, I can't believe we're behind these guys.
  9. CPF Nite @ Citi Field coincides with the Marlins' last game in our immediate midst. It's a fact: This will be the first September since 2000 when we don't host Florida...and the first time in the era of the unbalanced schedule. This treat comes two and three years too late, respectively. Niese goes tonight even though it's Pelfrey's turn. I assume Jerry is keeping the Big guy out of harm's way.
  10. One of Richard Nixon's failed nominees to the Supreme Court, G. Harrold Carswell, was judged by most observers to be a pretty mediocre choice. Sen. Roman Hruska attempted to turn that into a positive: "There are a lot of mediocre judges and people and lawyers," said the Nebraska Republican. "They are entitled to a little representation, aren't they?" And that's the best explanation I can divine for the enduring managing career of Jerry Manuel.
  11. Benjamin Grimm wrote: I prepared this card in April when it looked like Rod might win Player of the Month. It hasn't been unveiled until... RIGHT NOW! I'm going back and changing all my April votes to... Barajas 6.0 ...just to get this card more play in the archives.

  13. Frenchy has a meeting with himself and drives in Ike.

We've also never been to Minnesota right? We'll only get two of the Royals, Twins and Sox at Citi if we're sticking to the Central theme. so a 67% chance or so of seeing them. Mets played at Metrodome in 2004. Looked damn awful doing it, too. Played at New Comiskey in '02. All AL stops have been made. C'mon White Sox...chickens!
  16. Is there a designated time/meeting place for Thursday for those who've signed on to this sweet deal? I'm assuming the ticket (and concomitant exchange of funds) reveals itself at McF's.

  18. Walkoff Luis: Never the life of the party, though context seems to hang heavy in the air when he's the man in the spotlight. August 2007: "I came here to help the team and now I want to keep it going. I feel like I'm contributing." April 2009: "Last year, that was tough for me. Like I said in spring training, I've worked so hard. I feel good and want to prove what kind of player I am." August 2010: "I feel good. I feel good for the team, feel good for me. It's hard because for the first time I'm not playing every day. I try to do the best I can."
  19. Maybe Castillo's been so down about his lack of playing time that when he got his hit he didn't realize he'd won the game.
  20. Pagan 2.0 Castillo 1.5 Beltran 1.0 Davis 1.0 Thole 1.0 Dickey 1.0 Wright 1.0 Francoeur 0.5 Parnell 0.5 Takahashi 0.5
  21. Jerry plays whoever he meets with. Every story is "[Player] had a meeting with Jerry expressing his concerns over playing time, so Jerry put him in tonight's lineup." Jerry takes "Meet the Mets" very literally. As Lloyd Bentsen said of Bill Clinton, "He's the meetingest fellow I know."
