  2. The Brewers make the noise and represent the better overall story, but I'm picking up a Team of Destiny vibe around these Cardinals. Subject to change.
  3. May that awful rat bastard who hit .337 for the Mets before taking off two at-bats atone for his sins this Yom Kippur.

  7. Suzyn Waldman -- first voice, 3 o'clock update, July 1, 1987. Jim Lampley -- first show, 3:05 until Mets Extra with Howie Rose. He never held that time slot again, but he was their biggest name, so they put him out front. Then Mets Extra, the game, more Mets Extra...and the premiere of Captain Midnight. It was mostly downhill from there.

  9. Edgy DC wrote: In an era of accountability where even Mookie Wilson isn't safe, how is this jerk continuing to stay in his position? Gets ratings. High ones. He isn't counterprogrammed in a meaningful fashion by the other sports station in town -- idiot MFY fan on WFAN, idiot MFY fan on WEPN.
  10. When Murphy won his 2011 PotM, his card would have been that which was printed well before the season started. If he won it in September 2011, then perhaps a high number would have been in order so as to capture his change of position. (Though high numbers kind of disappeared, in terms of their meaning, after '72, and '72 had no positions.) My computer wallpaper, I meant, but now you've given me a great home decorating idea.
  11. Just noticed (because the whole set is currently my wallpaper), Murphy is 1b-of in 1971. Projecting his next card as INF. Which always struck me as a Topps copout when I was a kid.
  12. Jose Reyes: The antithesis of the player of whom it is said, "They'll have to rip the uniform off him."
  13. They did break out the original colors when they had a 10th anniversary of That Championship Season this summer. Because so little has changed about the BO...Chase Field, it took me a moment to realize the 2011 D'Backs were wearing throwbacks.
  14. Two outstanding home teams have each taken their home games, and now a fifth game is at hand. To make it less predictable, they should play it in Nebraska.
  15. Damn, that guy is naked.
  16. HahnSolo wrote: If the first name they offer back is Ty Wigginton, it's time for Sandy to loudly hang up the phone. But if they can get Jose Bautista thrown in, they don't even have to track down Matt Peterson.
  17. metirish wrote: There was a thread a while ago about this but I think we made fun of it because it might have been in the crazy friends FB status thread .......I guess it's true though......just what Wright needs, go from a huge park to an even bigger one albeit with better air. Where infielders are constantly colliding, no less. I like that somebody sees David Wright as an improvement over Ty Wigginton. The more things change...
  18. It's time...to put it on the line...

  21. Third HR of the day for Beltre. Rangers up 4-2. Gary gave only two of them OUTTA HERE as one was too no doubt about it to resort to catchphrases (true sign of a pro, not forcing it).
  22. The Mets, in their own way, seem to be introducing the We Haven't Won Jack In Five Years package
  23. I also have a few unused cards that I prepared as some of the monthly races winded down. I'll keep them in reserve in case I need them in future seasons. If, however, the player departs during the offseason I'll post the cards in the "memories of" thread. (I suspect this will happen at least once or twice.) There's one such card that I already did this with. I'll repost it here for all you completionists out there: You know, Grimm, anybody, presumably, could photoshop stuff like this, but you just get to the soul of these things. THAT is a 1971 Beltran in a way nothing else could be a 1971 Beltran. Every time you post your cards, I say "great job" or something to that effect, but seriously -- GREAT job. Thank you for doing them. They unleash a surge of some Met chemical deep within when I stare at them for minutes...which I've been known to do. And I noticed every Topps year of the '70s being represented and appreciated that, too.
  24. Outstanding illustrating and tabulating. Thanks BG. And congratulations, 2011 Schaefer Player of the Year Jose Reyes and Pitcher of the Year R.A. Dickey. As for the Reliever of the Year, I can't believe Brian Stokes didn't swoop in late and grab this from Beato, but good for Pedro persevering under the weight of Rule 5 status (if, in fact, that was a burden for him). Tim Byrdak, BTW, was the only reliever to spend the entire season on the active roster and be readily available all year. Pedro had a DL stint, as did Bobby Parnell; Izzy wasn't DL'd but would have been had it not been September, and in any event couldn't pitch the final few weeks. Others were traded or sent down or started the season in the minors.
