  4. Batista it is. Dickey's a knuckleballer. What's three days rest to him? He can pick up his light saber with his left arm for a couple of weeks.
  5. Good guys... Jose Reyes, ss Ruben Tejada, 2b David Wright, 3b Jason Bay, lf Nick Evans, 1b Willie Harris, rf Mike Nickeas, c Jason Pridie, cf R.A. Dickey, rhp Bad guys... Nine jerks
  6. This thing, with the monitoring of at-bat after at-bat in two, now three different cities has a real old-timey feel to it.
  7. NATIONAL LEAGUE BATTING RACE Through 9/23/2011 REYES .329 (.329480) Braun .329 (.329091) Kemp .326 (.325862) Stakes? Intrigue? Plenty. Reyes, of course, is trying to become first Mets batting champion (and leave/stay on a high note). Braun is trying to become Milwaukee's first batting champion since Hank Aaron in 1959 did it as a Brave (or the first Brewish as well as Jewish NL batting leader...more on the latter here). And Kemp's got some crazy idea about winning the first triple crown in 44 years (leads in RBI, tied in HR, less than .004 out of BA).
  8. Rain! Day-nighter Saturday, 1:10 and 7:10. Sunday pushed back to 2:10. Aloha.
  9. Phillies have lost enough to not catch the 1986 Mets, not enough to be caught by the 2011 Mets or anybody else until the NLDS. And they'll show a great propensity for wetness should they step on the field tonight. That's all I need to know. Feel free to jump in if you've got anything.
  10. I've been granted power of IGT attorney by the unavailable bmfc1, generator of yesterday's winning thread, to get this rainy party started, should it actually start. Which it might not, given the rain. But just in case, here's the lineup. Jose Reyes SS Ruben Tejada 2B David Wright 3B Jason Bay LF Angel Pagan CF Nick Evans 1B Willie Harris RF Mike Nickeas C R.A. Dickey RHP
  11. Joel Youngblood's two hits in one day against two different teams were against future hall of fame pitchers Fergie Jenkins and Steve Carlton Good one -- as is that card. As are those images. Man, remember how bleeping significant Todd Hundley was in our lives pre-Piazza? And, as the Also Quite Happy Game 148 writeup indicates, what a great quote he was?
  12. And in case anyone's wondering, I have the second-most losses to the Mets, behind Carlton.
  13. Carlton had the most career starts against the Mets. I'm second. Am I that unmemorable?
  14. Probably not what you're looking for, but they won the Cy Youngs in the only 20-win seasons of Seaver that did not net Tom a trophy (Jenkins 1971, Carlton 1972, 1977).

  17. Russell Martin, RSHDB. Russell Martin: 'I hate the Red Sox' By Andrew Marchand ESPNNewYork.com NEW YORK -- Adding fuel to baseball's bitterest rivalry, New York Yankees catcher Russell Martin said he hates the Boston Red Sox and would relish adding to their misery by helping to eliminate them from the playoffs during this weekend's series between the two teams. "Anything to get the Red Sox out would be awesome for me," said Martin, who has been involved in the rivalry for one season. When asked why, Martin sounded like the truest Bleacher Creature. "Because I hate the Red Sox," Martin said. The Yankees entered Thursday night, having already clinched the American League East. Their magic number to gain home-field advantage over the Detroit Tigers and Texas Rangers was three. It would only be for the American League portion of the playoffs. The National League owns home field in the World Series because of the NL's victory in the All-Star Game. Last winter, Martin almost went to Boston. The three teams most interested in signing him as a free agent were the Yankees, the Red Sox and the Toronto Blue Jays. The Yankees outbid the other clubs and gave Martin the best chance to start. Martin, 28, got $4 million plus performance bonuses. Now, he has added a little spice to this weekend, which from the Yankees' side, had lost some of its luster because the AL East race ended Wednesday. "They are fun to play against because they have a quality team and they are gritty and they play hard and stuff, but I would love to see them lose," Martin said. When informed of Martin's comments, Yankees manager Joe Girardi said he doesn't hate the Red Sox and would prefer not to add intensity to the rivalry. "I don't ever like to fuel anything," Girardi said. "Boys will be boys." In his first series against the Red Sox back in April, Martin hit two homers in one game at Fenway in the Yankees' 9-4 win in the second game of the season between the two clubs. Boston, though, has owned the season series with the Yankees, having taken 11 of 15 games. "They have given us a hard time all year, but I don't think we are scared of them or anything," Martin said. "If we play them (in the playoffs), we play them." The Yankees were scheduled to play another AL East foe, the Tampa Bay Rays, on Thursday. The Yankees also go to Tampa for the final three games of the season at the beginning of next week. The Rays and Los Angeles Angels trail the Red Sox by 2 games in the AL wild-card race. Martin said he doesn't hate the Rays or the Angels. Martin said his dislike of the Red Sox comes with playing in the Bronx. "I guess it just comes with the territory," Martin said. "When you wear the pinstripes, you just kind of learn to be that way." The Red Sox don't need anything to add to their playoff motivation as they will enter playing for their postseason lives. With the Yankees at 95 victories, Martin also wants to see the Yankees get to triple digits in wins. "It will be fun to be the spoiler and get 100 wins," Martin said.
