  1. I have no idea how it went down, mind you. I'm just happy it went down. Last night a friend suggested Mets should pay him a million bucks for the privilege, which reminded me of a posting fee for Japanese free agents. I hope it was a sign of good faith on the player's part. Or that he gets a bigger cut of the t-shirt sales.
  2. Ah, covered in the Beast Mode thread. Sorry about that. Enjoy some Julian Lennon anyway. [youtube:m88l3mg2]tl0wA2hhLv4[/youtube:m88l3mg2]
  3. He might stick around. At the very least, per Joel Sherman, he's agreed to waive the five-day clause that would make him a free agent unavailable to the Mets until May 15, if at all. He seems to like us and stuff.
  4. Last everybody-is-imposing lineup that comes to mind, July 23, 2006 (I looked up the particulars datewise, but these were the guys I was thinking of): Reyes SS Lo Duca C Beltran CF Delgado 1B Wright 3B Floyd LF Valentin 2B Nady RF Pelfrey P OK, maybe not Pelf. Once Nady was gone and replaced by Green, it wasn't quite the same. By the following year, Alou when he was available was more potent than 2006 Floyd, but he wasn't available much. And Lo Duca fell off. And Valentin fell off and eventually was out for the year. And so on until today, so I can't say I examined every lineup of every year. But mostly I hope tonight's comes through tonight and establishes a new benchmark.
  5. Werth LF Rendon 2B Harper RF Escobar 3B Robinson 1B Desmond SS Ramos C Taylor CF Zimmermann P
  6. Granderson RF Cespedes CF Murphy 2B Wright 3B Duda 1B d'Arnaud C Conforto LF Flores SS Harvey P That's a good-looking lineup. Hope it isn't shut out.
  7. Edgy MD wrote: Gee, that's gotta hurt. Dillon apparently reached his innings limit with zero fanfare.
  8. Dilson Herrera will be wearing No. 16, because he grew up on the legend of Doc Gooden. Or because Danny Muno wasn't using it.
  9. Rubin reports Tim Stauffer has been added to the roster, presumably to compensate for Carlos Torres's strained calf.
  10. Bryce Harper referred to Nats fans showing their Natitude by departing today's game early as "brutal". He must not have heard that Scott Boras advised them to cap their innings at seven.
  11. Lefty Specialist wrote: The term 'kinna hurra' comes to mind. Agreed. Go outside, turn around three times and spit.
  12. Cespedes 1.5 CTorres 1.0 Goeddel 1.0 Alvarez 1.0 Robles 1.0 Conforto 1.0 Johnson 1.0 Wright 0.5 Murphy 0.5 d'Arnaud 0.5 Tejada 0.5 Familia 0.5
  13. Alderson today said six man rotation in effect...with Verrett rather than Harvey. Matt pitches tomorrow, pitches in final Nat series if meaningful, is available for prospective playoffs (I think...seems fluid). Nothing else explicit, including those pesky other games Mets might need to succeed. "Oy," says one observer who is trying to make like Judy if not Terry Collins and see both sides now.
  14. Matz 2.5 Flores 2.0 Cespedes 2.0 Robles 1.0 Reed 0.5 Conforto 0.5
  15. Ya ask the Braves to do one thing...chumps. Let's Go team that' about to start playing the Nationals.
  16. Colon 6.0 d'Arnaud 2.0 Flores 1.0 Lagares 1.0
  17. “I almost moved to the Mets.” —Moose Washburn, “You Can Win ’Em All,” The Bob Newhart Show, Season 1, Episode 22, first aired February 24, 1973. The line was uttered by .183-hitting Cubs backup catcher Moose Washburn (Vern Rowe), who becomes a patient of Dr. Hartley’s when he sees how Bob has helped his teammate, pitcher Phil Bender. It refers to the many times he’s been traded. He eventually goes to Japan.
  18. DiComo, with editorializing coda: Matt Harvey tells reporters that he's always considered 180 IP a limit, and won't answer questions about the playoffs. Can't believe this.
  19. Rohan of the Times: Harvey indicated that he knew "for a while" that 180 would be the limit. Dr. Andrews told him again about a week ago Harvey, via Rohan, also says 180 is the number floating around because most MH has throw in a season is 179. Why is Harvey talking to Dr. Andrews a week ago? I mean a normal person can talk to whatever surgeon he likes, but don't be that way. Be fine, damn it. (My bedside manner would be beyond reproach.) Rohan: Matt Harvey says he's staying out of the debate, but also said multiple times he hired Boras for a reason, to protect his best interests The following from Rubin: Matt Harvey says he's focused on Tuesday. Asked if he'd pitch in playoffs, said he's focused on Tuesday. Asked who makes call. Same answer.
  20. By utilizing all his resources, TC is showing confidence in his entire team, yet another reason they continue to keep pulling together and winning. Or he's a fucking idiot with this lineup. I guess we'll see.
  21. No worries. Both Eric Young and Eric Campbell are in the lineup. Juan Lagares - CF David Wright - 3B Yoenis Cespedes - LF Juan Uribe - 2B Travis d'Arnaud - C Wilmer Flores - SS Eric Campbell - 1B Eric Young Jr. - RF Bartolo Colon - RHP
  22. You Gotta Believe, say Marc Black and friends like John Sebastian, Eric Weissberg and Steve Somers?
  23. Cespedes 3.0 Johnson 1.5 d'Arnaud 1.5 deGrom 1.0 Lagares 1.0 Clippard 1.0
  24. Magnifique! Granderson looks very good as a player of the month, said some crank who at some point said there was something about him he couldn't quite warm to. I'm far warmer these days, which is an appropriate response to the hottest player from the third-hottest New York August on record. Skipping Harvey starts played havoc on a 0.33 ERA pitcher, but one has to admire Bartolo's tenacity. And congratulations, Michael Cuddyer, on finding your niche and earning a Grimm Classic.
  25. The "postseason rosters are set in stone on August 31" precept must be a widely shared subconscious remnant from another era (it was considered crucial to get Kevin Elster up to the bigs prior to Sept. 1 nearly three decades ago), because it hasn't appeared to matter for ages. Consider the entire 2002 regular-season oeuvre of young and phenomenal Francisco Rodriguez. It was comprised of five games, the first of them appeared in on September 18. He spent the bulk of October shutting down waves of MFYs, Twins and Giants. Nobody checked his August 31 ID. Mets can't bring Dean Chance or John Candelaria into the organization at this late date and expect to him wheedle one or both onto the postseason roster, but a sudden case of the Dillon Gees (not considered contagious at this point in time) could probably be managed.
