  1. Mickey confirms Pete will start and indicates he'll bat third. #Lonsball
  2. 86-76 Third place Not quite the playoffs Though I'm willing to be five to ten wins light on my prediction. Or more.
  3. Anyway, let's get a win with this one.
  4. From September 30, in the wake of Noah's 1-0 shutout of the Marlins: http://www.thecranepool.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=27417http://www.thecranepool.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=27417

And since he stays on until they win, that should take us until about April 23. After that, maybe go by seniority? Edgy, KC, then the JCL/FK brothers. That should be enough to get us to the All-Star break. G-FaFiF totally hijacked it from Lunchie, though, who had squatted it in the old forum. I don't know if that's good thread form or not. There really are no rules for forum turnover etiquette.
  6. The Life of the party for this round. Time and Life in the same month. These Mets were big news (and based in New York). Parade makes the spouses sound very greedy and grubby, eyeing those "fat salaries". Maybe that's where Dick Young to the idea to drag Nancy Seaver and Ruth Ryan into his caustic coverage. The comment on Keith's on-deck accoutrement reminds me that when Mex guested on Robert Klein's short-lived USA Network talk show in the '86-'87 offseason, the host asked the athlete what the deal was with jocks "buffing their testicles" after coming out of the shower, making that weird towel between the legs motion to illustrate his question. Keith chuckled uncomfortably.
  7. http://www.nextstopmagazine.com/NextStop magazine seems to cover Eastern Long Island mostly -- and seems to have not updated its online content all that much since 2015.
  8. The defensive specialist was a defensive disaster when he started in center at MFYS III in July. Kind of ended the illusion that den Dekker was Dutch for Lagares. But I'm sure he's a fine fellow otherwise.
  9. Ranger Danger! Ranger Danger! Dowdy claimed on waivers by Texas before he could be offered back to Cleveland.
  10. Matt den Dekker is now Matt den Ducker, appearing quackly in Central Islip with all your favorite middling 2010s Mets.
  11. Edgy MD wrote: I tend to think of the People cover as the poorly conceived, rushed-to-market sequel to the Parade one. I learned from that story that Procter & Gamble was a big deal in Cincinnati because somebody quoted said the way Tom dressed he looked like a P&G executive.
  12. It won't show up here as an entry, but the Parade cover is a nice prequel to the People cover of Tom and Nancy eight years later (where they're both wearing...ugh...Reds jerseys).
  13. Tough draw in this bracket. I loved that Kingman cover in 1976 -- I remember exactly where I first saw it and snapped it up (the Colony card shop in Long Beach, not my usual perusing newsstand). I remember an accompanying article about Jerry Grote on the same page as the cover story or at least on the jump page. And I remember being so bleeping excited about Dave Kingman rating this kind of play (which he absolutely did). The SI throwback from 1969 in 2009 was such a nice surprise to encounter. I initially assumed Koosman had been cropped out, but no, it was just the righties in that photo. Great article synced to the 40th anniversary, too. Jefferies breaking his bat...well, that's certainly an apt Met-aphor. But Willard Mullin bringing his boy to the cover of Time? In the late summer of 1969? GO-GO, indeed.
  14. Edgy MD wrote: Nobody has coined the term "Grant's tomb" yet The phrase would gain new resonance after June 15, 1977, but it surely existed. From Leonard Shecter's Once Upon the Polo Grounds, published in 1970: Anyway Grant believes banners are O.K. as long as they're positive banners. When a fan exhibited a banner (B.C., before championship) which read "Welcome to Grant's Tomb," he was tossed out on his ear.
  15. Full no-trade means FUCK the Daily News and its bullshit Photoshopping of our ace into other uniforms.
  16. The previously agreed to $17M for 2019 is part of this, with $10M broken out as signing bonus. Jake opt-out after 2022; club option for 2024.
  17. So reports Martino. Five years. A Jake of Mets!
  18. A Mettle of Mets.
  19. Mets angling to stifle what's left of Devin Mesoraco's career, reportedly prepared to place him on Restricted List rather than release him from his minor league contract. Meso would rather retire than go to Syracuse, sort of like Thor. Perhaps Scripto Pen is hiring. Also, Mets in talks with Rene Rivera to be the designated veteran Quadruple-A catcher instead.
  20. Mets have done moments of silence for the writers who've covered them. I imagine one will be included this Opening Day.
  21. I'd also add Seaver often talked about pitching as his art, so Sport wasn't just doodling around with this concept.
  22. Sport went to a lot of trouble and Seaver played along. That's impressive on its own steam. The execution carries the day. The Parade cover looks out of date for 1969. If it were from 1967, I'd be inclined to go with it because how about Tom and Nancy busting through the Sunday supplements as a rookie? David's cover might have been the last TSN I bought. Blue skies shining on us in 2009! Jefferies needs a slightly smaller helmet. Or maybe a slightly bigger head...literally.
  23. What separated Seaver from his peers was his attention to detial.
  24. Tony DiComo's obit for mlb.com -- a thing of beauty. https://www.mlb.com/mets/news/former-mlb-com-reporter-marty-noble-dieshttps://www.mlb.com/mets/news/former-mlb-com-reporter-marty-noble-dies
