Will make spring debut Tuesday on 20 pitch count per Sports Illustrated
  3. Lots can go wrong, but the money still comes in. As a Mets fan with Money Bags now in charge I would love to see the Mets forge their own path. However, if the Nike contract is another decent player the Pirates or Twins could* afford, is it worth it? *Nevermind that they will just pocket the money and not improve the roster. They COULD afford more with deals like this and the mechanism to make them spend it is a separate convo.
  4. It's likely my phone, but there is no contrast between the background of the Japanese flag and the background of the message board. Senga and the new guy just have a red circle under them.
  5. Votto's Hall of Fame case is stronger than I had remembered it.
  6. I opened this thread expecting Jeri Ryan content and instead I got a no name reliever. What a buzzkill.
  7. I wish him the best of luck in pitching 139 innings this year.
  8. Is Verlander going duck hunting? what the heck is that vest
  9. I get the impression, and this is just an impression as I'm sure he wouldn't say it out loud, that Keith would love to semi-retired an s just do Sunday afternoon games or WPIX games or whatever. I don't think he wants to be home doing nothing, but I don't think he has any interest in 162 or even 62. As for Murphy, I didn't listen so I don't have an opinion on him specifically, but I like the idea of having as many former Mets with interest in broadcasting as possible do spring training games. Those that work out well can be invited back for some regular season fill-ins, and we can go from there when a job opens up. This way we have tested out all the guys with Met connections like a sort of minor leagues, instead of bringing in some yankee-stenched broadcaster or something when a need arises.
  10. I forgot Singleton, I think he finally made the majors years later or something like that?
  11. And as for Boras clients, they never seem to sign for bargain prices, no matter how close they get to Spring Training. Boras doesn't let them. I don't feel that is true, but it is pretty hard to objectively evaluate because none of us know for sure what is on the table and at what time, except for qualifying offers that are turned down of which there is an official record. 131 qualifying offers have been made since 2012 and only 13 accepted. happily they are broken down here: https://www.mlb.com/news/history-of-mlb-qualifying-offer-decisions-c300602464#:~:text=Since%20the%20qualifying%20offer%20was,offer%20this%20offseason%20accepted%20it.https://www.mlb.com/news/history-of-mlb-qualifying-offer-decisions-c300602464#:~:text=Since%20the%20qualifying%20offer%20was,offer%20this%20offseason%20accepted%20it. These are the players who might have made a bad decision, in my retroactive opinion (but hey, look at the list yourself and disagree) Of the 12 "bad decisions" to turn down the qualify offer (out of 118 total rejections) that I identified here, Boras was the agent for 5 of them. That includes 4 of the 6 in the past 7 years. I mostly gave guys the benefit of the doubt if they signed a 3 year or longer deal that even if they MIGHT have earned more by accepting the Q.O. and negotiating again later, it was reasonably unforeseeable at the time. i criticized 2 year deals where i felt it obvious. 2023 (none yet) 2022 $19.65 million offer -Nathan Eovoldi (2 years, 34 million) - He had a nice 2023. he easily would have surpassed the 'break even point' if he'd hit FA again this winter with 20 mil in the bank already. 2021 $18.4 million -Michael Conforto ($0 after offseason injury) - well, that was dumb (Boras Client) 2018 17.9 million -Dallas Keuchel (1 year, 13 mil) - (Boras Client) 2017 $17.4 million -Greg Holland (1 year, 13 mil) - (Boras Client) -Lance Lynn (1 year, 12 miil) - -Mike Moustakas* (1 year, 6 mil, up to 22 mil with incentives) (Boras Client) he did not reach any of the incentives as far as my googling skills can tell. 2015 $15.8 million -Ian Desmond (1 year, 8 million) -Dexter Fowler (1 year, 8 million) -Hisashi Iwakuma (1 year, 11 million) 2013 $14.1 million -Nelson Cruz (1 year, 8 million) -Kendrys Morales (1 year, 7.4 million) -Stephen Drew (1 year, 10 million) - (Boras Client) -
  12. Are those seriously NOT guys?
  13. Martinez is 36 and a DH only at a time where front offices seem to have devalued the right side of the position spectrum as well as older players. He seems like exactly the type of guy who maximizes his earnings by jumping at an offer in November before it disappears rather than a guy who should be holding out in the spring, because there are plenty of teams who can look at a Blake Snell and decide even now that they NEED him, but most teams probably feel something can be cobbled together at DH if they don't sign a guy and indeed the best plan for the position might be as a rotating "day off" spot for your other good hitters
  14. Boras gets some big numbers sometimes. If I were an MVP caliber guy I would want him as my agent, if I were middle of the market guy maybe not? Boras also seems to drag guys into spring training or even the season more than anyone else and falls short of what they probably could have gotten in the fall. Stephen Drew was a pretty bad case I recall specifically - turned down a 14+ mil qualifying offer to eventually sign for 1 year and less money, never got a long term deal after that. Maybe he just reps the most players so we remember his failures
  15. What the Fuck
  16. Has there ever been a long term deal for a pre arb player that didn't turn ok for the club? These seem pretty low risk edit: Immediately after posting this I remembered Wandor Franco. So I'll revise the question: Has there been a long term pre-arb deal that didn't work out ok for the club just lookingat on-field performance?
  17. Another underwhelming Mets signing! Montgomery and Snell still out there...
  18. Jose Reyes got exactly the number of votes he deserved. Glad that Wright gets to stick around another year. I don't think he is a hall of famer but I like talking about him! Beltran was a better player than Andruw Jones, but the trash cans are always going to be a factor. You know else were better players (who played center field) Jim Edmonds and Kenny Lofton. Neither got in.

Edgy MD wrote: =metirish post_id=145038 time=1705250737 user_id=72]For all the talk about how Blake Snell doesn't throw enough innings, his agent, Scott Boras, points out several recent examples of teams valuing elite talent over proven durability in long-term deals for starting pitchers. I would like to counter with the obvious, and point out these contracts and others as often not working out for their teams.
  20. Edgy MD wrote: Considering it's the anniversary of January 6, there's little reason to not think that a large army folks won't allow themselves to support the grossest of villains if he offers them victory. It's sad and gross and cynical, but cries of reason often fall on a multitude of deaf ears at such inflection points. He'd fit in well in Baltimore, where he could draw only favorable comparisons to Ray Rice (who, by the way, the Ravens honored last week - talk about tone deaf.)
  21. =bmfc1 post_id=144405 time=1704570383 user_id=73] A team like WSH should consider this. Their ignorant fan base won't notice and they can trade him in July if he is doing well.
  22. He played in Japan last year Nothing has really changed about his personal situation. You either believe him that he is into some weird, violent, but consensual sex or you believe his accuser that he is into weird, violent, non consensual sex and assault. I would rather the Mets just stay away from that situation.
  23. Edgy MD wrote: It strikes me that selecting the full option of 10 guys and none of them being Joey Mauer is unusual. I've already expressed my feelings on Wagner, but this guy even selected Utley over Mauer. Wow.
  24. =Cowtipper post_id=143925 time=1704041130 user_id=166] It feels like another 77-85 record roster.
