I see its Ugly Jersey Day in San Diego.

Thats my reading of it as well. Rios sure figured out how to cash-in on his one big year, and it wasnt even THAT big a year (2007- .297/.354/.498), coming at age 26 and building on .302/.349/.516 (in 128 games) the year before I guess Toronto thought he was on the way up, but now he's declined 2 straight years, I'd rather have Ryan Church today. The Mets need OF help but I wouldn't touch that contract.

Giambi in 328 PAs... .193/.332/.364, you'd think if a guy is hitting like that they'd stop letting him walk
-
I never even heard of Uncle Buck before this poll.

]Kind of odd that Farmer Ted hasn't made an appearance tonight, huh? but we had a post by Herb Gardener! thats sorta like a farmer

bailing on the board and likely falling asleep with tv on. fuck west coast trips.

ENOUGH of lican already, he's done, we're done, play the kids. lets see Dillon Gee, or that lance broadway guy we got, do we still have casey fossum?

Bueller is my winner as its the only one I can watch again. Breakfast Club was fine the first time around but its not something i'd watch over.

Richard came over from Chicago in the Peavy trade, lets give him a nice "welcome to the NL" with a 5 run first!

It shocks me that a teenager on what's described as a 6' 3" - 175 frame could be THAT slow. i don't know anything about the 20-80 scale in terms of 40-time and stuff but i was probably just as slow as a 6'5" 180 lb 17 year old.
-
my point was that the mets easily could have had a better than replacement, and better than avg, player at the position in the offseason
-
they're not floating around in the middle of the season, but there were plenty of guys available in the offseason that would have given the mets better production in a corner outfield slot, and very little excuse not to sign one (particularly with the cheap deals Abreu and Ibanez got). with all the injuries it probably wouldnt have mattered anyway, but omar can be blamed for not getting one of those guys, Abreu only got a single year at 5 million. wow.
-
I don't know about this particular player, but if you have a guy, high school or college, who has already thrown a bunch of innings in 2009 you'd probably rather wait until the deadline to sign him so as to limit his 2009 minor league innings, which is probably an easier to swallow option for all parties than shutting the guy down before any potential minor league playoffs or penant races.

="Frayed Knot"] Others have agreed to deals which are probably above the slots but MLB doesn't want to announce them until near deadline date for fear it will encourage others to break the ceiling too. That is apparently the case, this from baseballamerica: ]Vanderbilt lefthander Mike Minor, the seventh overall pick, agreed to terms with the Braves on a $2.42 million bonus yesterday and is expected to officially sign today. Minors bonus is the highest in club history and the highest ever for a No. 7 pick. Minors bonus also was $242,000 over the recommendation by the commissioners office, making him just the second first-rounder to receive an over-slot deal this year. The other was California high school shortstop Jiovanni Mier, who got $1,358,000 ($26,000 above slot) from the Astros at No. 21. MLB slashed its slot guidelines by 10 percent across the board this year, and Minors bonus equals the 2008 recommendation for the No. 7 choice. Nineteen of the 32 first-round picks remain unsigned. Two sources said that Minor could have signed months earlier if not for interference from MLB. Minor and the Braves agreed in principle on the $2.42 million bonus before the draftbut before Atlanta received official word that the slots were reduced. The commissioners office pressured the Braves not to make the above-slot deal official so they wouldnt hurt the Reds in their attempt to sign Arizona State righthander Mike Leake, the No. 8 pick, to a below-slot bonus.

]the $50$125 that it costs for the season the lawyers fixed that for you. and lets not pretend a "skills seminar" is going to make kids slide "right", because a) there are major leaguers who don't know how and the trial lawyers are going to try and define what is "right" after the fact as any injury = wrong.
-
any participant in a sport shoulsd assume the risks normally inherent in that sport, there might be some borderline cases (like getting run over as a catcher when running over the catcher isnt explicitly permitted or banned), but this, imo, isn't one.
-
Angel Pagan is only arb-eligible this coming off-season (3+ years of service) and, I think, is playing his way either into a starting OF job next season here or into a semi-valuable trading chip. I don't think he's starting material, but he's definitely a good 4th outfielder to have.

'96 was when lance johnson had 20+ right?

]West Coast Mets Travel list..all signed at MLB minimum which would be a nice raise for myself i'll play for $10/hr and a promise that the post-game spread will be kosher. i turned on the radio in the 3rd and thought we were hearing monday's game as figgy was pitching... is niese going to be ok?

Will Carroll: Beltran might miss all of 2010
nymr83 replied to Centerfield's topic in New York Mets Talk
="Centerfield":3mtgukzx]If Beltran plays soft, give me more soft players. My problem is Beltran playing hard (out there on a bad knee) when he should be sipping drinks on a beach until his knee is 100%.[/quote:3mtgukzx] or until the Mets are within 10 or so net games back of the division or wildcard, or april 1st 2010. i hate that anyone is being rushed back right now. rushed might not even be the right word, i hate that anyone is even being allowed to 'resume baseball activities' at less than 100%, the team doesnt need them (because the season is o-v-e-r), the team needs them healthy next spring. the exception is delgado, since he is a free agent i'd tell him that its entirely up to him whether he wants to worry more about a) getting healthy or showcasing himself at less than 100% Ashie62 Aug 04 2009 04:48 PM The whole team, from top to bottom is soft. I hope Carlos Delgado returns so he can showcase himself or as a curtain call for Cooperstown Beltran & Reyes are excused for 2009. Personally I hope Reyes is excused for good. Frayed Knot Aug 04 2009 05:55 PM I may regret asking this, but what defines a player as "soft"? Valadius Aug 04 2009 06:12 PM You hope Reyes is excused for good? Are you dissatisfied with his work? Ashie62 Aug 04 2009 06:27 PM Excessive absenteism by a key employee is usually cause for dismissal. Beyond that, it is my feeling that Reyes will be dealing with his hammy for the rest of his baseball life. Thank you for your help Mr. Reyes you now work for ----- OlerudOwned Aug 04 2009 06:35 PM I still don't get the logic that Sizemore will be under less scrutiny moving from Cleveland to New York. Kong76 Aug 04 2009 06:37 PM A62: Excessive absenteism by a key employee is usually cause for dismissal <<< Not for medical reasons. A62: Beyond that, it is my feeling that Reyes will be dealing with his hammy for the rest of his baseball life <<< Stop the presses, Ashie62 had a feeling. Ashie62 Aug 04 2009 06:45 PM Unfortunately for a Professional athlete medical reasons count You're telling me in all seriousness Reye's problems don't concern you beyond the here & now? If not, so be it, I disagree, thats all Frayed Knot Aug 04 2009 06:51 PM And let me guess, you knew this hamstring situation was going to be a lingering problem in 2005, then would allow him to play virtually every inning of 2006, 2007, and 2008, before becoming a lingering problem again in 2009 and beyond? Kong76 Aug 04 2009 06:51 PM Being concerned doesn't have me penciling him in for never seeing another AB in a Mets' uniform. You're itchin' to go cleon or whatever ... resist the temptation. PiggiesTomatoes Aug 04 2009 08:41 PM What does leg discomfort mean? Is there a pussy factor here? Edgy DC Aug 04 2009 09:11 PM Edited 1 time(s), most recently on Aug 04 2009 09:34 PM Oh, come on. Pussy factor? ]Unfortunately for a Professional athlete medical reasons count Just about anywhere in the civilized world, if you get injured in the line of duty, the company is responsible for you. Ashie62 Aug 04 2009 09:21 PM ="Kong76":2iq5lj0m]Being concerned doesn't have me penciling him in for never seeing another AB in a Mets' uniform. You're itchin' to go cleon or whatever ... resist the temptation.[/quote:2iq5lj0m] I don't understand the large amount of support for Reyes on this board. Yeah, he's hurt and in a couple of days we'll find out how badly. His full season numbers are impressive, but he disappeared the last 2 Septembers, and wasn't doing much til 5/21 of 09. I'm the only one on this board that would like to move him?? That surprises me. Edgy DC Aug 04 2009 09:40 PM ="Ashie62":30jtftth]I don't understand the large amount of support for Reyes on this board.[/quote:30jtftth] It's a board full of Met fans. He's easily the best shortstop that has ever worn the uniform. In almost 50 years. ="Ashie62":30jtftth]Yeah, he's hurt and in a couple of days we'll find out how badly.[/quote:30jtftth] And getting hurt is generally considered a forgiveable offense. ="Ashie62":30jtftth]His full season numbers are impressive, but he disappeared the last 2 Septembers, and wasn't doing much til 5/21 of 09.[/quote:30jtftth] That's cherry-picking and vindictive. And almost certainly counter-productive. ="Ashie62":30jtftth]I'm the only one on this board that would like to move him?? That surprises me.[/quote:30jtftth] Yet it seems true. Piggy may be leaning your way, however. You strike me, to be fair, as a fan who is usually looking over the shoulders of the current players for the next thing. Reyes is far from perfect but I can't think of anybody on this team whose performance is harder to replace. We're seeing that everyday. seawolf17 Aug 05 2009 04:53 AM Plus there's the whole "he's only 25" thing. Hell, guys get hurt; it happens. But he's still getting BETTER. Shut him down and get him ready for 2010. Moving him is asinine, especially considering that you get shit for him coming off an injury. If the Mets trade him in the offseason, then he comes back and has a typical year next year for the Brewers or whoever, then you're the first one bitching about why we traded this guy and complaining why David Fucking Eckstein is our shortstop. Mex17 Aug 05 2009 05:41 AM The last game before he got hurt provided a good example as to why people were beginning to get sick of him. The player has immense talent. The ability/desire to become great by means of actually thinking about what you are doing on the field as opposed to playing by the seat of your pants may or may not come. It's a tough mix to handle, you do not want to sacrfice that natural joy but you do want to see some added seasoning from him. Kong76 Aug 05 2009 06:16 AM A62: I don't understand the large amount of support for Reyes on this board <<< You made a delirious prediction that he'd never play another game as a Met and now it's taken longer for him to come back and I'm sick of hearing you bang your drum is what it boils down to for me. I'm not opposed to moving anyone for the right price. Including posters :-) Edgy DC Aug 05 2009 07:15 AM Edited 1 time(s), most recently on Aug 05 2009 08:49 AM I think Reyes thinks about what he is doing on the field. And I think he has displayed more than a little seasoning. metsmarathon Aug 05 2009 08:38 AM y'know, i always thought rickey henderson had hamstring problems... also, i've noticed through my own experience that about the only muscle group that's perhaps more tricky and annoying to recover from than a hamstring is a quad. i give beltran all the credit in the world for playing as much as he had, and as well as he had, with his various quad strains. that's hardly soft in my book. Edgy DC Aug 05 2009 08:51 AM Yeah, Ricky was a lazy shiftless goodfornutttin' with the Yanks for not getting back from injuries faster and then he ends up playing 20 more years and has to be dragged from the field. it was really 'soft' of him to get a concussion running into Mike Cameron to get to a ball. -
