  2. Ashie62 wrote: Tony Bosch on 60 minutes tonight with texts and claiming he himself injected Arod. Admitting to additional crimes on National TV, brilliant! Bosch deserves a long jail sentence, the real crime here is that the feds are giving him any kind of pass for cooperating with MLB. If he wants to talk to MLB or even sell them information thats fine, but it shouldnt lessen or delay his criminal punishment.
  3. This is tough for me, and more so the general philosophy than the specific case of Marcum, I went and dug into his game log, 2 great starts, 2 good ones, and 1 awesome 8 inning relief appearence vs 8 not good starts and 1 bad relief appearence. Is that better than a guy who barwly played? Does starting 12 times have value? Ill keep my rankngs for now, but i acknowledge your criticism is pretty valid and i am 50/50 here on which i think is right.
  4. Value in starts vs relief appearances? I'll thino abou5 mak8ng that change
  5. metsmarathon wrote: Going back to creatine... That's still perfectly legal in terms of baseball and the IOC, right? If so, what's the problem? Are contact lenses next? What about laser eye surgery? also, it totally bothers me that some voters only vote for, like, 3 guys cos that's all they think should go in, and especially when its unrelated to the number of players who they feel are or sufficient merit to deserve eventual induction. In other news, I'm starting to convince myself that Fred mcgriff might be a solid hall of famer, if we presume him to be clean of the peds. In any other era, he's a hofer. He's Willies McCovey & Stargell. Who gives a shit about the IOC? Unless a substance was either banned by MLB or illegal in the United States (MLB should not need to explicitly ban those) nobody should ever suffer for having taken it.
  6. What is "abusing the privilege" Voting for any reason other than the baseball careers of the players on the ballot, such as: submitting empty ballots because of Pete Rose, not voting for anyone who played after an arbitrary date because hte sport was not clean (as if it ever was), selling your vote, giving away your vote, not taking your vote seriously enough to do the work. oh and Ballots MUST be made public... if you cant stand behind your vote you should be forced to give it up, because you are being given the privilege of voting on behalf of all baseball fans who deserve to know who and why.
  7. I'd take the ballots away from the BBWAA. Problem is, I have no idea who to pass the baton too. Yeah. I don't want to see a fan vote filling the hall with Yankees. I think the media is fine, but I'd change the criteria to reflect modern realities, I would add broadcasters as well using similar criteria that the writers have. possibly players/coaches. fans would be fine, but it would have to be in such a way as to not stuff the ballot box all-star game style. maybe the fans of each team get 10 ballots (so 300 total out of a pool of say 1000-1200 once i add everyone above) and those ballots can only be filled out by voting at in-stadium kiosks that scan your ticket to ensure one vote per person per game. all 10 of that team's fans' ballots would cast a vote for anyone who topped 75% in that year's fan voting at the stadium.

  9. Is there an automatic steroid haze surrounding Ken Griffey jr. As well? Elligible in 2 years and once looked like a future unanimous kind of guy
  10. Alou, whose number match up pretty well to Reggie Jackson, is off the ballot. I dont think he is a hall of famer, but the ballot is such a mess that nobody can even talk about it
  11. I am boycotting the HOF until such time as Piazza is in it.
  12. Almost all of the arguments I see advancing Morris' case are of the cherrypicking variety; "he was the best at X from arbitrary date A until arbitrary point B" seems to be the most common, which proves only that better pitchers' careers that overlapped with his didn't exactly overlap. but when compared to inducted HOF starters and past near misses his career numbers fall in with the near misses. so the argument for Morris really has to be a lowering of the bar and the opinion that there are another 20+ starters who should have gotten in but didnt. i happen to thing the overall level of HOFers is about right, despite misses on both sides of hte bar (Tony Perez in, Alan Trammell out)
  13. I'd like to take issue with JCL's (non) ranking of Mejia, what did Brandon Lyon do to finish higher than him? 34.1 innings of 4.98ERA/1.63WHIP can't be more valuable than 27.1 innings of 2.30/1.17 and they came in starts when you have to face batters multiple times.
  14. Frayed Knot wrote: I'm not saying that vote was wrong necessarily, only that when the guy who got the 18th most time on the mound finishes 11th overall it does pretty much emphasize your statement about a drop-off after the first ten. Personally I think that the amount of playing time has to be a significant consideration. For better or worse, those who did get the ABs and the IPs are the guys who made up the bulk of the 2013 Mets and devaluing them (by over-valuing part-timers) because we wish someone else was in there instead I believe at least partially mis-applies the goal of this little project. Also, just as a general idea, I find projecting small samples as a sign of what a given player would have done if granted more playing time is a bit too faulty and speculative. With Mejia in particular, there's only so much impact one can have with just 5 mid-season starts including the last one when he was pulled after the 3rd inning never to return for the season. Obviously there's always a trade-off between time and productively and there are no rules about how much to weight either. I've always been a quality of quantity guy when ranking players, but after review i've edited my rankings to move Mejia down from 20 points to 9 points as the innings were just too low. As a rule, I think that once a player gets below the theoretical replacement level (across the board, offensively and defensively) he could have 700 Plate Appearences and I'd still put him very low as he contributed to losing not winning. This year's examples of that principle include Marcum and probably Tejada... I've just dropped Tejada some more as well after looking at things again, he made Rey Ordonez look like Nomar Garciaparra with the bat this year.
  15. There is a strong possibility that i misread a number or the wrong stat line, ill look later
  16. No morris or smith, but i would also add trammell
  17. This was one of those years where you just want to stop after 10 guys and say nobody else contributed at all.
  18. Ditto, waiting for all 3

Edited to drop Tejada, he really sucked

Granted..those two positions are not the whole team but I believe improvement from those two spots came from Sandy's mouth. He noted SS..1B..OF..SP..C specifically... He has nailed 2 for 5 that I see... I'll judge him by the product on the field and the direction the team seems to be headed. I'd be happy if he doesn't fill a specific position at any cost just because he said at some point that we needed it.
  23. Frayed Knot wrote: There was something in one of the papers today about Drew possibly winding up with either NYC team - although no evidence was given in either case, most just a statement, "it could happen". Personally I can't see him going to the Bronx and having to sit and/or DH half the time, and I sure can't see the Yanx telling Jeter that HE is going to be the backup. As far as the Mets go, the article speculated that Drew/Boras wanted three years while the Mets wanted to hold things to two. I suppose you can call that progress as I think the early reports were that Drew was looking for five years coming off his first good and healthy year in a while. Drew isn't even close to being a good enough hitter for an AL team to consider him as even a part-time DH though, his value comes from being an average bat at a position devoid of bats. if you just wanted DH production, trade for Lucas Duda.

Ceetar wrote: Benjamin Grimm wrote: I recall that a few years ago Boras had one of his players sign a one-year contract, figuring that it would be better to try again a year later and hopefully find a more favorable market. I wonder if this will happen with Drew? From the Mets perspective, they may not want to lose that draft pick for a one-year shortstop, so maybe the middle ground is a two-year contract. Was that Madsen? Who signed a one year deal with the Reds in 2012 and promptly got hurt in Spring Training and hasn't pitched since? Not sure if he was a Boras client, but that was what happened to him. If Drew drops down into the affordable 3 year range I'd hope the Mets would give it a shot, but I'm skeptical that Boras and Wilpon aren't just enjoying a mutually beneficial "leak" of their conversations... Boras gets the perception of a greater market while Wilpon gets the perception of at least pursuing big-ticket free agents.
