  1. Is he Joe's son? Or Phil's son? (Holy crap! After I typed that I realized that that's the exact question I used to get when I was a kid, from my grandmother's relatives! My father's name is Joe and his brother's name was Phil!)
  2. My sense is that pitchers don't want to become knucklers until they've exhausted every other opportunity. And sometimes they're well into their 30's before they get to that point. But so many pitchers wash out of the minors before they're 25. You'd think that there would be a good number of them who would be willing to try the knuckleball as a last-ditch effort to hang on.
  3. Bobby Ojeda is going to be on NPR's Fresh Air this afternoon. Apparently he wrote a book about how much his arm hurts? (At least, that's what it sounded like from the on-air promo.)
  4. Wins By a Mets Pitcher, Career Dickey passes Ryan, Perez, and Saberhagen and moves into a tie with Sadecki. 1. Tom Seaver 198 2. Dwight Gooden 157 3. Jerry Koosman 140 4. Ron Darling 99 5. 5. So far in June, Ike is hitting .280 and slugging .460.
  6. If they pitch Dickey every fifth day, and he keeps winning every start, we'll be getting into Denny McLain territory.
  7. But less perspective. The older you are, the more you appreciate how rare something like this is.
  8. Mets Willets Point wrote: Is there an easy way to make a list of Hall of Famers who have played at least one game for the Mets? That may be a good start for me. Right here.
  9. I just posted this on the UMDB Facebook page: (Dickey is) only the second Mets pitcher, ever, to have a record of 11-1 AT ANY POINT IN THE SEASON. The only other 11-1 pitcher was Terry Leach, who won his 11th game, against one loss, on September 8, 1987. That ended up being Leach's final decision of the year. He was 7-1 as a starter and had four wins in relief.
  10. That sounds better than smelling the turd. Nice photo in the Daily News this morning of Santana with Seaver.
  11. Three of those names are very impressive. I'm afraid that I'm drawing a blank on Francisco Liriano. Was he, is he, any good?
  12. The final game that the Mets played in Tampa last week, and all three games from the weekend series against the Reds, will close on Wednesday morning. All four games are severely undervoted, but Schaefer marches on nonetheless. Schaefer POTG 6/14/12 - Mets 9, Rays 6 Schaefer POTG 6/15/12 - Reds 7, Mets 3 Schaefer POTG 6/16/12 - Reds 4, Mets 1 Schaefer POTG 6/17/12 - Reds 3, Mets 1
  13. I agree with maximizing Dickey, at least as long as this crazy run of his lasts. But I think Terry's opinion (rightly or wrongly) is that extra rest messes with Johan. That seems to be the lesson he took from Santana's two post-no-hitter starts.
  14. Dickey 6 Davis 3.5 Valdespin 0.5
  15. "Is it difficult to breathe with that red ball over your nose?" "How do all of you fit into that little car?" "What size shoes are those?" "What is Mayor McCheese really like?" "Is Emmett Kelly your role model?" "Who was better, Bozo or Clarabelle?"
  16. It may be decades away, but I suspect the day will come when players will no longer be wearing the classic soft baseball cap on the field.
  17. That thought occurred to me as well this morning as I was reading that Daily News article about Bay.
  18. The Daily News had a special pull-out section in the paper today. Strange to see a baseball pull-out section that wasn't about the Yankees. I can only imagine that somebody got fired over this.
  19. I don't think there's any word yet on how severe the concussion is, but since he's now had a history, they'll probably be extra cautious. Terry pretty much saying it's up to the doctors. Bill Madden in the Daily News this morning raised the question of whether Bay should even try to come back. He's not the player he once was, and why jeopardize his health for the remainder of his life to continue his futile Mets career? I think it's a question that Bay should be pondering.
