  1. Voting for Tuesday night's win in Tampa will close on Friday morning. Schaefer POTG 6/12/12 - Mets 11, Rays 2
  2. According to STATS LLC, the starting pitching matchup was only the second since 1921 to feature the AL and NL wins leaders during the regular season. The other was Boston's Josh Beckett and San Diego's Jake Peavy on June 24, 2007. The Rays said it has only happened three times in the last 50 World Series, with Atlanta's John Smoltz facing the Yankees' Andy Pettitte in 1996, Toronto's Jack Morris facing Atlanta's Tom Glavine in 1992 and the Dodgers' Sandy Koufax going against the Yankees' Whitey Ford twice in 1963. I'd like to know how it could have happened in 1921. Did the wins leader in one league get traded in-season, and then face the leader from the other league before anyone in his original league caught up? Or are they for some reason only able to trace this back to 1921?

  4. Ceetar wrote: That'd be really weird. It doesn't matter now anyway though. I didn't think you could get a no-hitter when you let a run score? Of course you can. It wouldn't be a shutout, but it would certainly be a no-hitter.

  6. For that, you have to go to the HJ Clubhouse.
  7. John Harper, in an article on the same two-page spread, said that most managers hate the "defined roles" thing but reluctantly go along with it. I'm also very glad that Terry is breaking that mold. I wish I had more confidence that it was a permanent thing, but I suspect that once somebody emerges as a good choice for the "eighth inning role" then that role will become official. And so on for the seventh inning, etc.
  8. "Cars?" Or "ears?"
  9. Does Gary have a middle name that starts with a Y? Yvonne, perhaps?
  10. I answered that one with "equal amounts" because it all blends together for me anyway. Each "entertaining" feature is sponsored by somebody.
  11. I think I remember Danny Murtagh coming out of retirement to manage the NL team in 1972.
  12. I can't imagine Keith going undercover. He doesn't seem like he could resist the urge to reveal his Keithness.
  13. I like the idea of more quiet. I prefer the noise to come from the fans, not from the speakers. I often forget how relatively peaceful Shea used to be when I first attended games there in the early 1970's. (The Mets Yearbook series on SNY serves as a reminder.)
  14. This is from an e-mail survey I just got from the Mets: The Mets are considering adding a designated "quiet" seating section with lower volume PA Announcements and no music or cheerleading. The seating section would be located in the Left Field Landing. How likely would you be to purchase tickets in that section? Please assume all game days and start times would work with your personal schedule. Note: This is hypothetical concept that the Mets have not committed to; you are evaluating the concept for research purposes only. The Mets are considering designating one weekday game each week for a "throwback" ballpark experience with live organ instead of recorded music and fewer PA Announcements. How likely would you be to attend games on the Throwback day? Please assume all game days and start times would work with your personal schedule. Note: This is hypothetical concept that the Mets have not committed to; you are evaluating the concept for research purposes only.

  17. Scant obituary, but here it is.
  18. My Spidey sense tells me that Craig Swan will one day discover this thread while Googling himself.
  19. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: I was gonna remark on that Swan photo, you always see that one and never any action shots. That Strawberry image (in its uncropped version) is one of my all-time favorite baseball images. That really is classic Darryl. The Swan photo looks like it might have been lifted directly from the 1976 yearbook. (I'm sure it was in a yearbook; I'm less certain of which one.)
  20. Is that vomit, or a slice of spinach pizza? (I'm pretty sure that's the first time I've ever typed that sentence.)
  21. Edgy DC wrote: Well, it's just a sandwich roll and a Fresca. I don't FEEL dirty. I kind of have a general gambling aversion, I suppose.
  22. I've never bet on the Mets, and likely never will. Maybe it's silly, but I like to keep my rooting interest pure.
