  1. I recognized that name immediately. I used to buy his Baseball Handbook every year, probably until a few years after I discovered The Sporting News. I think (hope) that I still have them somewhere. Getting that book was a highlight of the spring, a sign that baseball was returning at a time in my life when that was very important! I think the first volume I bought was in 1975.

  3. Voting for all three games played in Phoenix this past weekend will close on Wednesday afternoon, some time after 2 p.m. Friday night's game is particularly low on votes, with only three at the time of this posting. 5. At this point, I'm thinking that handing the 2014 first base job to Ike Davis, in the hope that he'll be good, is a bigger risk than letting him go elsewhere. 2013 was supposed to be his rebound year from 2012. He's had two consecutive lengthy and horrendous starts. If he eventually gets his act together somewhere else, then good for him.

  8. I'm not arguing for or against Young, but he'll ultimately be judged on the last three and a half months of the season, not the first week and a half of August.

  11. Hmmm... I'll have to check my World Almanac and Book of Facts.

  13. Bizarre, isn't it? The name Mike Hessman is barely familiar to me.
  14. As mentioned in the July POTM announcement, I've gone back and retroactively named the Reliever of the Month Award winners for 2006 and 2007, and the Bench Player of the Month Award winners for 2006 through 2011. 15. That's the second reference this week to "Willie Mays Hayes." I had never heard that name before, so I googled and found out that he's a fictional character from a movie. I think you're referring, perhaps, to Willie Mays Aikens?
  16. Yes, but why does that approach so frequently fail? I can't think of many specific examples right now, but I'm pretty sure I've seen the same thing happen with other teams. This year's Blue Jays, perhaps. Why is it that adding three or four all-stars doesn't make your team better? My best guess is that it's because generally these star players you add are past their 30th birthday, and by then there's a greater chance that they're in decline. But Vince Coleman was only 30 in 1992. Bret Saberhagen was 28. Bobby Bonilla was 29. Eddie Murray was 36 and Willie Randolph was 37. In 2003, Tom Glavine was 37, Roberto Alomar was 35, Mo Vaughn was 35, and Cliff Floyd was 30. I would say that it wasn't unreasonable to think that the 1992/93 group should have improved the team. Obviously, it didn't.

  18. I agree. I would have chosen from Hela, Enchantress, and Executioner. Walt Simonson's run on the title was terrific; I can't blame them for getting some inspiration from those stories, but I probably would have stuck with the more classic foes. I do hope, though, that in Thor 3, if there is one, that we get to meet Beta Ray Bill.

  21. Mets are now 52-60, with a winning percentage of .464. Still not good, but much better than where it was when I last checked in to this thread. With 50 games remaining, Mets currently project to a final record of 75-87.
