  1. It was moderately popular last year, so we'll try it again this year. IPP stands for Individual Player Predictions. These will be threads where we share our expectations of how a player will perform in the current year. Feel free to make your predictions as specific or as vague as you like. (You can find a listing of the 2013 IPPs here.) Given how gloomy my outlook is for both Ike Davis and Lucas Duda, I have to think that Josh Satin will get a decent share of playing time, unless somehow Daniel Murphy or Wilmer Flores end up over at first base. We won't be much into April before Satin starts appearing in the starting lineup every time the Mets face a lefty. By May or June, he may even be getting a lot of starts against righties too. He's not going to be as good as a contending team wants a first baseman to be, but he'll be the best we have. 290 at bats, .270, six homers.
  2. Of course, when he traded Thole and Nickeas he also threw in the reigning Cy Young Award winner.
  3. The Mets have frequently been willing to swallow the final year of their multi-year mistakes. I don't know if they've ever bailed on someone earlier than that. What happened with Bay was entirely predictable based on what happened with Castillo, Perez, and others going way back.
  4. My point is that the Mets are not at the point where Plawecki is a luxury. We need to see more from d'Arnaud before that happens. That doesn't mean you don't trade him in the right deal, just that there's more reason to hesitate.
  5. I'd hate to give up on Plawecki just yet. Travis is still too much of a question mark.
  6. Added Parnell, Puello, Recker, and Rice.

I'll say no, but I can see him getting into 60 games, facing very few batters each time. I'll say 60 games, 70 innings, 0-2, 3.95 ERA.

(You can find a listing of the 2013 IPPs here.) I seem to be immune to whatever charms Anthony Recker may have. All I can say is that since I'm hoping that Travis d'Arnaud has a solid, if not breakout, season, I'd like to see as little of Anthony as possible. I'll say 30 starts, 2 homers. He'll probably win the big-league backup role over Taylor Teagarden. If Kevin Plawecki comes on strong, he may displace Recker (or Teagarden) as the backup. Also, if d'Arnaud gets injured again, I think Plawecki is more likely to be the regular catcher than Recker is.

(You can find a listing of the 2013 IPPs here.) I'm not sure what to think about Cesar Puello. Despite his PED past, he's still ranked among the top Mets prospects on just about every list that's been posted in this forum recently. If he's as good as they're saying, he may very well be ready to push his way into the Mets outfield this year or next. If there's an injury, or if Chris Young falters, or if Chris Young thrives and gets traded, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Cesar get regular playing time with the Mets by late August.

(You can find a listing of the 2013 IPPs here.) One of the Mets biggest health-related questions this year is how well Bobby Parnell will recover from his neck surgery last year. Will he be able to hold down the closer job throughout the season? I'm going to opt for optimism and say that he will. I'll predict 32 saves.
  11. I might have thought that Tovar would stick around a little longer too, since shortstop is pretty unsettled, but I suppose that if they need him he won't be far away.
  12. I'm gonna say Chris Young. I think the Mets will have three productive hitters in Wright, Granderson, and Murphy. Having a fourth solid bat will, if not make their offense strong, at least make it less weak. Davis could also be that guy, but I'm not counting on him for anything at all.
  13. Well! I'm already wrong!
  14. Added Matsuzaka, Mejia, Murphy, Niese, and Nieuwenhuis.

In last year's "What outfield?" season, he only had 95 at bats, and I think we'll see less of him this year. He may not arrive in New York until September, if then.

(You can find a listing of the 2013 IPPs here.) I'm concerned about Jon Niese's continuing arm troubles, but I'm going to choose to be optimistic that any injuries he has in 2014 will be of the short-term nagging variety. 30 starts. 3.45 ERA, 13 wins, Schaefer Mets Pitcher of the Year.

(You can find a listing of the 2013 IPPs here.) I like Daniel Murphy and I think he's going to have a good year. .290, 14 homers, 38 doubles. I also think he'll walk more than he has in the past. Whether it will be enough to induce the Mets to give him a contract extension after the season remains to be seen. I'd like to see them sign him to a multi-year deal this offseason (maybe four years?) but my guess is that he'll become a free agent after 2015 and will be elsewhere by Opening Day 2016, if not sooner.

(You can find a listing of the 2013 IPPs here.) I'm rooting for Jennry Mejia to be part of the Mets rotation for at least the next few years. That may come to pass, but I think he'll see most of his 2014 action from out of the bullpen. He'll spend some time in Vegas this year, but mostly he'll be with the Mets. Five starts, thirty relief appearances. 3.55 ERA.

(You can find a listing of the 2013 IPPs here.) Daisuke Matsuzaka will win the 5th starter job out of spring training and will stick in the rotation until he begins to suck or Noah Syndergaard gets promoted. He'll then spot start through the remainder of the season. 14 starts, 4.20 ERA.

  21. It's going alphabetically. We'll get to Tejada soon enough.
  22. I can see Puello and Lagares (with or without den Dekker) joining Granderson in the Mets outfield in 2015. Maybe even sooner, depending on how the Youngs do.
  23. It seems clear that he's not. Terry is very high on Eric Young.
  24. Four people in a row have predicted exactly 200 innings for Dillon Gee.
  25. Added Gee, Germen, Granderson, Lagares, and Lannan.
