  1. Voting for the 2014 Schaefer Mets Player of the Year Award will begin on Monday, March 31, the Crane Pool Forum has announced. This will be the tenth season that Crane Pool Forum members will be participating in Schaefer voting. The Schaefer Mets Player of the Year Award was established in the 1970's, and Schaefer points were awarded by Mets broadcasters Lindsey Nelson, Ralph Kiner, and Bob Murphy. The award was re-established by the Crane Pool Forum in 2005. Third baseman David Wright has been the winner in in six of the nine years of the revived prize. The other winners were Johan Santana in 2008, Jose Reyes in 2011, and Daniel Murphy in 2013. A voting thread is opened in the forum at the conclusion of each regular season Mets game, according to CPF spokesmodel Benjamin Grimm. Voting generally stays open for two business days, after which the votes are tallied and the results are posted in the voting thread. In addition, says Grimm, each month a Schaefer Mets Player, Pitcher, Relief Pitcher, and Bench Player of the Month will be named. Voters are asked to adhere to a specific format, which is outlined at http://archives.cranepoolforum.net/6200/f9_t6278.shtml Also, please remember that we have two players named Young this year, so votes for Chris should be CYoung and vote for Eric should be EYoung. Thank you, and Happy Schaefering!
  2. Howard Johnson is another guy who almost qualified as an answer.
  3. Alex Trevino, 1990? Also, I have a feeling it was somebody from Atlanta in 1995, but I can't think of who it might be.
  4. My hunch is that Mejia will start the season in the big-league bullpen.
  5. Will they still have Mama's of Corona at the Rotunda food court?
  6. I just noticed that Saturday, April 5 is the only home Saturday game that begins at 1:10 p.m. All others are either 4:10 or 7:10.
  7. Mike Vorkunov/The Star-Ledger wrote: VIERA, Fla. - Whether Juan Lagares can hit well enough to be the Mets everyday center fielder is still a relevant question, but GM Sandy Alderson indicated today that Lagares will get a chance to prove himself. Lagares hit .241 with a .633 OPS in 421 plate appearances last season, but played exemplary outfield defense and had 15 outfield assists. "Everybody would probably agree he’s our best outfielder, he’s our best centerfielder, but he’s going to have to hit a little bit, too," Alderson said. "So if he were to start in center field on opening day, I think that we’d have to see over a period of time… how long, how short I don’t know—that he could carry the offensive side of the game as well. If that’s not the case, then typically a guy like that would be better off playing every day somewhere else, but that’s premature." Asked if Lagares had done enough to be the starting center fielder, Terry Collins replied: "Tough to answer that right now. We know how good he is defensively." I'm not sure what conclusion to draw from Sandy's statement. Mike Vorkunov seems to think it means that Lagares has won the job, but I don't see it.
  8. He's probably hung up on that $14.1 million figure.
  9. Name the first Met of 2014 to: 1. Reach base safely: Eric Young 2. Get a hit Granderson 3. Draw a walk Wright 4. Hit a double Granderson 5. Hit a triple Eric Young 6. 10. Kristie Ackert, Daily News wrote: PORT ST. LUCIE, FL. -- Matt Harvey is going home -- at least for now. The Mets injured ace, who publicly feuded with the front office over the conditions of his rehab, met with the team this week. They have made a plan that will allow him to do his rehab work back in New York City, where the 25-year old makes his home, a team source confirmed. It is not a huge surprise, considering it is his right under the current collective bargaining agreement. The team cannot force him to stay at the spring training complex for more than 20 days without his written permission.

Mejia is going to be innings limited, so I'd let Daisuke eat up some early-season innings and ease Jennry into the rotation later on. why waste Mejia's better innings in the minors though? It's not like he's not going to be pitching. He'll be pitching, but not necessarily as part of a starting rotation. I'd have him spend the first month or two in the pen and get him into the rotation around June 1. (Or sooner, of course, if Matsuzaka isn't any good.) If the Mets do end up contending, it will be good to have Mejia available in those later months.
  13. Matsuzaka. Mejia is going to be innings limited, so I'd let Daisuke eat up some early-season innings and ease Jennry into the rotation later on.
  14. 83-79. Third place. No playoffs.
  15. That's all I ask!
  16. Maybe, maybe not. He'd sure give him a try though.
  17. I'd like to see them give Flores a shot too. If it gets to be April 25 and he's not getting it done, then you try someone else. I'd rather give him the chance to fail (and by doing so, the chance to succeed) than just say it won't work. WWDJD? (What would Davey Johnson do?) I bet he'd play Wilmer at shortstop.
  18. Especially if you practice.
  19. Wow, it was eight years ago.
  20. And Mike Jacobs, of course, was "The Jake Monster." Geez, how many years ago was that? I still remember Valadius' "Nickname Methodology" thread.
  21. metirish wrote: Hold on, C. J. Nitkowski has not appeared since 2005 http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/nitkoc.01.shtml He showed up on the list because he appeared in the Mets farm system in 2012, playing for Buffalo and Binghamton. I should have mentioned that at the top, but I forgot that such people would be included!
  22. The following former Mets appeared in the major leagues in 2012, but did not do so in 2013. Are their careers over? Will any of them be heard from again? Manny Acosta Rod Barajas Miguel Batista Miguel Cairo D. J. Carrasco Brad Emaus Willie Harris Livan Hernandez Luis Hernandez Danny Herrera Ryota Igarashi Jason Isringhausen Mike Jacobs Fred Lewis Guillermo Mota Xavier Nady C. J. Nitkowski Val Pascucci Ronny Paulino Elvin Ramirez Johan Santana Brian Schneider Wilson Valdez Dan Wheeler Chris Young
  23. I think that is (or would be) the right choice.
