The writer deserves his click, can't you excerpt and link? or even comment on what you are posting? I recall the last time I did the right thing. I posted a link along with my comments, and the article subsequently changed, so my comments made no sense and it looked like I didn't know what I was talking about. Probably the proper thing to do is excerpt the part on which you're commenting, and include the link if anyone is interested in the full article. I know I've done that sometimes, but I also know that I often don't do that. I also agree that hate-pasting long articles without comment adds little value to the forum.
  2. Centerfield wrote: Is there a rationale behind the years listed in the thread title? Was the last year cut off? I was trying to look up what kind of season the Mets had in 198 A.D., but I came up empty.
  3. I voted N.Y. CITI too. I like the black outline around Duda, Harvey, and Mr. Met on RUNAWAY TRAIN!, but that tiny Terry Collins face in the train's window is a bit creepy.
  4. The winner of this poll will be the Group One champion and will advance to the Final Four.
  5. . Winner of Round 1.1.1 Winner of Round 2.1.4 Winner of Round 3.1.2 N.Y. CITI New York Post, February 25, 2015 In spring training, Curtis Granderson says that the Mets are ready to take over the town. Winner of Round 1.1.6 Winner of Round 2.1.2 Winner of Round 3.1.1 RUNAWAY TRAIN! New York Post, April 24, 2015 The Mets, riding an eleven-game winning streak, head to the Bronx to play three games against the Yankees. . . . . . .
  6. Maybe we should have all posts start in the Red Light Forum for a while.
  7. Really? I totally missed that. (David Hinckley, by the way, has resurfaced at The Huffington Post. His TV columns were one of the best things in the News in recent years.)
  8. batmagadanleadoff wrote: Not that the Mets yearbooks are great shakes. I swear that the last two I bought, I did so out of habit and one of those, I still haven't even bothered to look at. Really. Still, they probably weight four or fives times what a 70's yearbook weighs and aren't remotely as interesting or engaging. That's where I'm at too. I've been buying these big fat yearbooks out of habit, and then shelving them with barely a glance. I had figured that I'd appreciate them in the future even if I don't appreciate them in the present. But it finally occurred to me that I'm not likely ever to feel much nostalgia for any current or future Mets teams, so my last yearbook was the one from 2014. batmagadanleadoff wrote: Whatever happened to sports cartoonists? If you're talking about the Bill Gallo type, who would have a regular feature inside the pages of the newspaper, I'm not aware of any but I'd be surprised if the breed had gone completely extinct. There is still Ed Murawinsky, whose work often appears on the back page of the Daily News, including that cover that you post whenever the Mets play in Philadelphia.
  9. This thread looks like it's grown big enough to retire. If there are future "Butterball" posts to be made, please start a 2016 thread.
  10. So the maximum possible now is 836. I voted for the 600's range, but it looks like those who voted in the 700's are looking pretty good. (Oh, and props to Seo and Gwreck for remembering to bump this poll each of the last two offseasons.)
  11. The home version of the game isn't available yet because of "production issues" at Hasbro. We do apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. Voting for Round 3.4 is now complete, which means that the entire third round is over and our field has been reduced to eight covers. In this latest round, we had one winner from the Daily News and one from the New York Post. Or Elite Eight is comprised of four covers from each of the city's two tabloids. All Newsday covers, as noted previously, have been eliminated from the competition. Poll 3.4.1 APPLE JACKS! (New York Post) defeated MURPHY'S FLAW (Newsday) 8 to 5. Poll 3.4.2 TEAM OF DESTINY (Daily News) defeated METS TAKE A HIT (New York Post) 11 to 1. Tentative schedule: January 7: TEAM OF DESTINY vs. APPLE JACKS! . . . . . . . . . . . .
  12. For some reason, I've spent the last two years referring to him as "Jacob". Boy, do I feel like a fool!
  13. Poll 3.4.1 closed this morning, with APPLE JACKS! (New York Post) defeating Newsday's MURPHY'S FLAW 8 to 5. This marks the elimination of the last Newsday cover. Three Newsday covers had made it to Round 3, with all of them failing to advance to Round 4. Of these three covers, the one that received the highest percentage of votes across all three rounds was THOR'S DAY, which therefore finishes as the winner in the Newsday category. THOR'S DAY won Round 1.1.8, receiving 30 per cent of the votes. It went on to defeat the Daily News' JUAN DIRECTION in Round 2.1.1, by a tally of 10 to 4, and then suffered a 9 to 7 loss to the Post's N.Y. CITI in Round 3.1.2 For being featured on the highest-ranked Newsday cover, Noah Syndergaard will receive a box of Rice-A-Roni (the San Francisco treat) and a bottle of Turtle Wax. .
  14. The two polls from Round 3.3 have now closed, with one win going to the Daily News and the other to the New York Post. Six of the Elite Eight covers have now been determined, with three each from the News and the Post. Poll 3.3.1 YES-PEDES (Daily News) defeated LARGE & IN CHARGE (New York Post) 7 to 5. Poll 3.3.2 CAPITAL THRILL! (New York Post) defeated AS GOOD AS IT METS (New York Post) 9 to 2. Tentative schedule: January 6: CAPITAL THRILL! vs. YES-PEDES . . . . . . . . . . . .
  15. You can't, because the poll is closed, but if it had ended in a tie, there would have been a "weighted" tiebreaker.
  16. Or 1-800-CESPEDE. (Leave off the last S for savings.)
  17. It would be more entertaining if Jeter himself "came out."
  18. Zvon wrote: I'll abstain if a tie advances them both. It won't.
  19. Maybe fewer people are around. I see the vote totals going down so I figure people are losing interest. Maybe I'm wrong and it's just the holidays. And I see comments like "This is too hard so I'm going to abstain." I'm going to let Round 3 play itself out and Round 4 will begin on Monday. Round 4 will determine the winner in each of the four groups, so we'll soon have our Final Four.
  20. Yeah, I know, I'm starting to get tired of this thing too, but it's almost over and we're going to see it through to the end. The two polls from Round 3.2 have now closed, and we have two more covers in the Elite Eight, both from the Daily News, joining the two Post covers that won in Round 3.1. Poll 3.2.1 "U" DA MAN! (Daily News) defeated NIEUW'S FLASH! (New York Post) 9 to 5. Poll 3.2.2 CON4TO! (Daily News) defeated AMAZIN' MATZ! (Daily News) 8 to 7. Tentative schedule: January 5: CON4TO! vs. "U" DA MAN! . . . . . . . . . . . .
  21. Yes! I was at the game in Philadelphia when Cespedes got hit on the hand with a pitch. From my seat, I was able to look up news reports to find out the X-ray results. In the old days, I would have had to wait for the postgame show on the radio during the drive home from the ballpark.
  22. Oh, yes, definitely. MLB Extra Innings is one of the best things ever. There was a dead zone for me between (I think) 1997, when WOR stopped being a "superstation" and 2006, when I discovered Extra Innings. During that time I was limited to watching the Mets on their relatively few national broadcasts, or when they played the Braves or the Phillies. Things are much better now.
  23. The turkey-and-mozzarella hero at Mama's, with the marinated mushrooms and red peppers, is the number two reason I go to Mets games.
  24. The way Glen Miller played. Songs that made the hit parade. When girls were girls and men were men. Mister, we could use a man like Herbert Hoover again! When we didn't need no welfare state. When our old LaSalle ran great.
  25. The main thing I like is how easy it is to get scores and updates. I spent two weeks in Spain in May and June of 1999 and during that entire time, I had no news at all about how the Mets were doing. There was an Internet at the time, but it wasn't very portable back then. This year, when I was out of the country for two weeks, I was able to follow the Mets reasonably well. The Internet has changed everything. I also remember when I moved out of New York in 1988, I could only follow the Mets through WFAN (and only because I wasn't too far from New York) and the national edition of The Daily News. I even tried a mail subscription to Newsday for a while, but the papers were coming over a week late, and they had little value to me at that point. And I do like that there's an SNY. It's not as good as I'd like it to be, but I especially appreciate it in the winter for Mets Hot Stove. It's not a great show, but I watch it faithfully because baseball coverage in the winter is always appreciated.
