  1. Is that Shea Stadium? Or could it be a spring training game?
  2. What with the blizzard, I forgot all about the Tabloid Cover Derby. Today the two semi-final rounds ended, with YES-PEDES defeating N.Y. CITI 11 to 8, and CON4TO! defeating TEAM OF DESTINY 12 to 6. The elimination of N.Y. CITI marks the end of the New York Post's hopes of winning this derby, as the final two covers are both from the Daily News. As the featured player on the highest-ranked Post cover, Curtis Granderson will be awarded with Rice-A-Roni (the San Francisco Treat) and Turtle Wax. The final round, YES-PEDES vs. CON4TO!, which should have started this morning, will be delayed because of weather and will kick off tomorrow morning instead. The winning cover, you may recall, will be on display in the lobby of the CPF International Headquarters in Stockholm, Sweden.
  3. They can trade De Aza if they get his permission. Otherwise, as FK says, they have to wait until June 1.
  4. Do The Mets Make The 2016 Playoffs [crossout]Without Cespedes[/crossout]?
  5. ESPN.com wrote: The deal, pending a physical, is for three years and $75 million, including $27.5 million in the first year, after which he can opt out. WOW! ESPN.com wrote: Cespedes' addition raises the team's payroll in 2016 to roughly $140 million, its highest level since Omar Minaya's days as general manager. WOW again! It would be a very encouraging sign if the Wilpons let Sandy keep it at this level and there's no corresponding salary purge in the next few weeks.
  6. Me? I'm gonna have myself some Pop Tarts right now! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
  7. HO. LEE. SHIT. I'm just getting this news now. I woke up, fed the cats, and then turned on the computer to see the latest weather forecast, but decided first to see if there was any Cespedes news. I am absolutely stunned. I wasn't expecting this at all. This is fantastic.
  8. Newsday reporting that Carlos Torres is DFA to make room on the roster for Bastardo.
  9. This poll closes on Monday morning. While you're snowed in for the next 48 hours you can pass the time by pondering these two covers.

  11. He should totally wear his uniform number as a Roman Numeral. Something like XIX.
  12. batmagadanleadoff wrote: But now it appears that he'll fit quite nicely so long as the Mets don't have to commit as much money as they thought they would've had to. It may be more about committing the years than the money. I don't discount that money is an issue, but it's one thing to have Cespedes jamming up center field for one season than for five. I would try to structure the three-year contract as something like 25-16-16, if he'll go for it, of course. Yoenis would then be guaranteed $57 million if he sticks around, but will have incentive to opt out, if that's what the Mets are not-so-secretly hoping he'll do.
  13. Yeah, the only answer I can give is "Maybe. Maybe not." They definitely have a chance, but they're not a sure thing by any means.
  14. For some reason, this is starting to remind me of Juan Gonzalez.
  15. Me too. If they could get him for three years with a one-year opt-out, that would be perfect.
  16. Gwreck wrote: Also, for what it's worth, I personally don't believe that losing the wild card game is truly "making the playoffs" when using my normal standard that "making the playoffs is a successful season." I agree with that.
  17. It sounds like Ryan Raburn might be the guy they go to to fill that role.
  18. This was posted three hours ago: Buster Olney wrote: @Buster_ESPN Sources: Mets, Cespedes discussing an opt-out clause after the 1st year of a three-year deal. Would allow him to test market again Fall '16.
  19. Wilmer Flores was interviewed on Mets Hot Stove last night. He was asked what kind of a teammate Yoenis Cespedes was, and he said (I'm afraid I'm paraphrasing here), "He wasn't special. He was a teammate who was there."
  20. It's impossible to say, of course, but I voted yes, although it would have been a closer race and the tension would have been much more, um, tense.
  21. That would be terrible news. Watching baseball would become a lot less interesting.
  22. Edgy MD wrote: I'm waiting on a second source before I paint him onto the roster... We've got multiple sources now. The Daily News, The New York Post, NJ.com, and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette are all reporting the signing. Seems like it's two years, $12 million.
  23. Apparently I was aware of who Eddie Kunz was back in 2008, since I posted an opinion about him in that thread. But the name doesn't ring a bell at all with me eight years later. I do remember Jon Niese, Daniel Murphy, and Bobby Parnell, though. Fernando Martinez too, although I haven't thought of him in years. Am I remembering correctly that he was considered a "can't miss" or am I conflating him with Alex Escobar?
  24. Wow, it looks like I only saw three movies in 2015, all of them of the popcorn variety. Here they are, in my order of preference: Ant Man Avengers Age of Ultron Jurassic World I'll probably eventually see a bunch of these movies on cable in the next couple of years, but trips to the theater are pretty rare.
