Not just "historic" moments, but anything that any fan anywhere might consider special. So they're exploiting fans of all 30 teams. No piece of cardboard is worth $10 to me. Not unless it will get me $10 off my next grocery purchase.

  4. I don't expect the younger generation to appreciate newspapers the way we do, but to be so dismissive of them is just arrogant and ignorant.
  5. I'm beginning to get a glimmer of an idea why Boras "let" Strasburg sign a contract before testing free agency.
  6. Readers blast B-Mets’ potential names A Stud Muffin by any other name ...
  7. I agree. I have no idea if it's physical, mechanical, mental, or what, but something is definitely very wrong. It may right itself quickly. Or it may not. I expect the Mets will give him at least a little more rope.
  8. Ah, you're just scuffling.
  9. "Scuffling" is my least favorite baseball euphemism, by the way.
  10. They want to read the 50 pages a day that _they_ select. I see that as a weakness and not a strength. When I get news from the Internet (and I do, frequently) it is, as you say, likely to be stuff I'm interested in. But when I page through a newspaper I see other stuff, stuff I wouldn't have sought out. And I end up learning about things I wouldn't have otherwise been exposed to.
  11. Do you really think the Internet is so much better than newspapers because it's on a screen instead of paper? It's still content written by human beings. And do you really think that tweets are better than long-form journalism?
  12. You're just being a snob. Newspapers are much more than sports stories.
  13. I agree that this may just be a slump. And that David may have several hot streaks remaining in his career. But this is definitely a reminder that the best is behind him and the decline is in progress. It's really a question of how swift that decline will be.

I really doubt that's true. Both that it's what's keeping newspapers afloat and that anyone thinks that. Newspapers are still around because there are still readers around who appreciate how wonderful they are. Even though there are fewer of such readers and newspapers aren't as wonderful as they used to be.
  15. No, I'm not certain. I'm still hoping he has a surge or two left in him for this year. But I do think that each year is going to be tougher on him and less productive than the preceding year. There's likely a lot of downward spiral ahead over the next four and 3/4 seasons.
  16. David Wright has enough money to last the rest of his life. His future children may also be set for life. Sure, if he were to retire after 2016 he'd be leaving, what, $80 million on the table? But those might be four miserable years if he decides to keep playing. Three hours, maybe eventually four hours, of preparation each day so he could go 0 for 5. Or pinch hit in the sixth inning. If it plays out that way, I can see him deciding that it's not worth the aggravation and the embarrassment. I remember thinking (and speculating here in the forum) the same thing about Jason Bay, but of course it never happened with Bay. But it has happened with Cuddyer, so it's no longer unprecedented. The big difference, at this point, is that Wright has more years ahead of him and more money coming to him, but the principle is the same. At what point is it no longer worth it?
  17. I thought this was interesting. Years ago I probably would have been on the side of "cleaning" the quotes, but as the article says, now that we frequently see athletes being interviewed on TV, we know how they really talk, so I think I've moved to Team Verbatim. "We Gonna Be Championship!": A New Approach To "Fixing" Sports Quotes
  18. I really don't think he'll be playing in 2021.
  19. I would think that if they're shifting dramatically like they've been, most pitches will be on the inner part of the plate, and it's gotta be pretty hard to hit that the opposite way. But if the shift is on, and you see an outside pitch, you have to be ready to poke it the other way. I'm pretty sure I've seen Lucas Duda do this a couple of times, but the opportunity has to be there.
  20. How about this? Geraldo is creepier but Mariano is more depraved.
