On May 31, Steven Matz had a chance to lock down his first Schaefer Player (and Pitcher) of the Month award. When he took the mound in the top of the 6th, he had thrown five scoreless innings and looked to be on his way to earning between 3 and 5 Schaefer points, if not more. But things unraveled, and Matz had to settle for 1.97 points. That would have been enough to clinch the title for May, except that Noah Syndergaard had a rare relief appearance during that final game of the month, and scoreless inning earned him 0.69 points, enough to put him over the top with just a little to spare.
