  1. First-round voting is now complete for all polls in Group Two and eight more covers will advance to the second round. Of this group of eight, we have four covers from the Daily News, three from Newsday, and one from the New York Post. The Post is off to a slow start in this year's competition. It has so far only secured two of the eventual 32 slots on the board, compared to nine for the Daily News and five for Newsday. (Last year at this point, the News had eight first-round winners, the Post had five, and Newsday had three.) The Group Two winners, seeded from 1 to 8 are: 1. SULTAN OF SWAAT (Daily News, 27.9% of the vote) 2. IN A PINCH, (Newsday, 27.6%) 3. DOZEN GET ANY BETTER (Newsday, 25.0%) 4. SIGH OF RELIEF (Newsday, 23.7%) 5. FROM MEEK TO MIGHTY (Daily News, 23.3%) 6. SEEDS OF LIFE (New York Post, 20.0%) 7. SWEEPING THE COUNTRY (Daily News, 17.8%) 8. GRAND FINALE! (Daily News, 17.6%)

  3. I think a fair balance might be to let each player be drafted by three teams. That way the players have negotiating leverage, but one team can't hoard all of the best young players.
  4. For Rick Ownbey!
  5. Who's the player pictured on this cover?

  7. I don't think that Ron and Keith have the same voice (Ron's voice has a bit more of the stuffy-nose sound) but they do have a lot of the same inflections. And I suspect that that's Ron being influenced by Keith.
  8. My favorite fun fact about Todd Zeile is that he's descended from John Adams and John Quincy Adams. Not sure that qualifies as "dubious", however.
  9. Todd Zeile has done a nice job on Mets Hot Stove the past week. I wasn't aware that he was with SNY. Is this something new? Or is this yet another way that I'm out of touch?
  10. Yeah, I was aware of the movie as well, and could even have named the two stars, but I also (obviously) didn't make the connection between the Daily News cover and the movie poster.
  11. Well, some aspects of pop culture anyway.
  12. I voted for Raines and Guerrero. A lot of these guys had the majority of their career after I stopped paying attention, so if I overlooked anyone then too bad for them!
  13. And Lorn Brown!
  14. Well, that's good news. I never really thought he'd leave, though.
  15. Rats! I was hoping that there was a movie called Men in Salmon.
  16. I get the feeling that this cover, which I think is great, is making some kind of pop-culture reference that I'm not picking up on. Was there a movie called Men in Salmon or something that I'm not aware of?
  17. That's really the flimsiest of rumors. It seems very unlikely that Stanton will be traded to the Mets, and if he is, the deal will have to include someone of the caliber of Syndergaard or deGrom. The Mets won't get him for Neil Allen and Rick Ownbey.
  18. 1995, first base, John Olerud.
