I do, anyway. It was the dawn of the steroid era. That was the year that Lenny Dykstra, for example, showed up in camp all bulked up, and everyone marveled.

Maybe it is the ball, but I have my doubts. Everyone was talking about a "juiced ball" in 1987 and we know, in retrospect, what was really happening.

I was at Shea when Terry Pendleton hit his homer in 1987 that gave the Mets a serious setback in their quest for a division title. And I was also there the following year when Mike Scoscia hit that three-run homer in Game 4 of the NLCS that, as much as anything, kept the Mets from advancing to the 1988 World Series. This game also comes to mind. I think it was the only time I saw Johan Santana pitch in person, and he gave up a first-inning grand slam. The score turns out to have been a lot closer than I recalled, but it wasn't a fun day a the ballpark:
